I haven't used Ruby, but I am mostly doing text manipulation with perl, and am pretty much too lazy to bother learning another language, and actually I don't find that too much of it doesn't make sense, perhaps because I am doing fairly simple things with it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Cool, just curious.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:35 (twenty years ago)

I was going to make a "Perl necklace" joke that was going to revolve around the fact that Andre 3000 pronounces "cum" as "comma" in the hit song "Hey Ya!" -- but then I gave up.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

I mostly manipulate text in LaTeX. There's some joke fodder for ya!

xpost double entendres ho!

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

I want to learn LaTeX.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

I suggest this book:
http://www.macrotex.net/texbooks/lamport.jpg
and if that ain't enough, find Guide to LaTeX, 4th Edition by Kopka & Daly, which has the power to make your head spin.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Where's Julia? She should introduce herself to Jesse.

Here's a fact about Julia that not all of you know: she's really cute.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Otto, When are you going to have a party and invite your Headache friends and me, so we can become BFF and have a show together?

no time soon. i won't be having any parties in my new place, the landlady lives upstairs and she keeps going on and on about how quiet the neighborhood is and how peaceful the building is. the place i moved out of saw a lot of late night after party action.

you should have been at the hideout saturday, all the citizens of the 'city except mike were there. norah was dj'ing, i may have been dancing. i know i was taking money out of the atm at 2:53 a.m. i seem to remember going to exit after that. it was a very long very drunk evening.

mike and lisa are also in cococoma so they'll be at the beat kitchen on the 11th but you won't be around. but there's a good triple bill of submarine races, cococoma, and miss alex white at the bottle on the 31st. cococoma's 7" ships today i think, so be on the look out. it's 3 of my 4 favorite songs from them so it should be a good one. it'll be out on shit sandwich.

if you want a show with them i'd say just email norah. though they're going on a west coast tour after SXSW so they'll be away for a couple weeks.

Is the other book an O'Reilly book? I love me some O'Reilly books. Nerdy looking books with friendly beer-bellied lions who are apparently dating dogs, those are good too.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

hey, that's julia? i've never seen a photo. she is cute!!

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Except now she has black plastic franed glasses that look like mine, which has certain "Single White Female" overtones, but we're not roommates and she's not trying to kill me, so I guess that's ok.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

All the ChiLX girls are really cute! I fell in with a good crowd.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:46 (twenty years ago)

While Julia looks cute in her pictures, I was surprised by how attractive she was in person. The pictures fail to do her justice.

(I was also surprised at how much she reminded me of a friend of mine back in Portland, both in the way she looks and the way she talks.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:46 (twenty years ago)

She's fucking adorable, it's true.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:46 (twenty years ago)

I"M BAAck

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

for whatever reason there were cute girls all over the bottle last night. there were maybe 80 people there, 40 of them women and 35 of those had me falling hopelessly in love with each of them.

just one of those weird random things.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

I think that's called "horny."

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Is the other book an O'Reilly book?

Unfortunately, no. It's published by Addison Wesley. O'Reilly is silent on the topic of LaTeX, as far as I know - must be beneath them. In a lot of ways, it's very much akin to one of their books, though.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that same sort of thing was happening to me at the Bottle the other night, as discussed upthread.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Only in my case it was "horny and drunk." Because when not drunk I can rein in the horniness.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Indie hipsters be hot.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Except my Portland friend doesn't wear glasses:

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Also, this is the guy who wrote the book that I posted the picture of:
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~mihaib/articles/latex/img8.png
I think this is awesome. He could be any number of professors at my college.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:52 (twenty years ago)

xpost Yikes. And will take your ass out, apparently.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Nah, she's just playing a really intense game of Twister.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:53 (twenty years ago)

no i wasn't horny and i wasn't drunk at the time i noticed it. most of these girls appeared to be a decade younger than me so it wasn't like i was ogling them with lacivious intent or anything. but you know that little thrill you get when you see a really cute girl do something really cute like laugh or smile? i was getting that every time i turned around.

it's a fun little narcotic.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Did she just break that guy's neck?

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:54 (twenty years ago)

That LaTeX book looks like it was published in 1986.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Did she just sever a man's head in that picture?

xpost

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:54 (twenty years ago)

xpostiness aw, thanks for the compliments. aaaaand more xp

i have been looking at apartment listings. where do people look for apts when they're searching? craigslist, the reader, where else? i have a while to look (for a two bedroom! i will be living with a friend and two cats, woohoo!) but it's still going to drive me crazy because my default setting is some level of crazy.

hi jesse! i'm julia, rather obviously. i'm like that pic above except that i have cooler glasses now. they're black but they had no single white female intentions whatsoever, bah. they're differently shaped! chris saw them!

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/lshort/english/lshort.pdf

Installing LaTeX can be a chore, though.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:55 (twenty years ago)

She's pretty intense. She's a pediatric oncology nurse by day, studying to be a nurse practitioner by afternoon, and an actor at night.

She did not break that guy's neck. Some of you have met that guy with the black curly hair, for he is the guy who stole my air mattress.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:56 (twenty years ago)

This is how I'm spending my last day in Chicago. Killing time on the Chicago thread until the movie starts (at 4:30). I'm OK with that.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Julia, I just looked in the Reader and didn't even bother with Craigslist this last time I moved. Between the two of those, I feel like you should be pretty set.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

they're black but they had no single white female intentions whatsoever, bah. they're differently shaped! chris saw them!

Whatever. You know you're just trying to copy me. Because I'm the only hipster in the world with square black plastic frames.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:58 (twenty years ago)

That LaTeX book looks like it was published in 1986.

Haha, the original copyright is 1985!

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, cross-species love was really big in the mid-80s.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I want some new frames (and NEED a new prescription), but when I went to the shi-shi glasses place in downtown Portland I liked my current ones better than everything in the store.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:01 (twenty years ago)

thanks, jaymc. i'll find something, it's just daunting stuff to think about.

do i look like chris' friend because i look like i have potential head-severing capabilities? that would be kind of cool. badass and stuff.

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:01 (twenty years ago)

I realize that might not be the most "separated at birth" photo, but how can you say no to that photo?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

xpost to Jordan Yeah, I had the same experience last time. Just get the eye exam and new lenses, and save a couple hundred.

Funny thing is, these glasses were the epitome of indie cool when I got them several years ago, but I found them on the bargain rack for, like, $60. Why? I was in Houston.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm off to the gymnasium for some exercise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I remember distinctly -- I bought them because the looked like the glasses Justin Theroux wears in Mulholland Drive, and I was obsessed with that movie.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Good luck at the gym, dude. Spin one for me.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Haha, the original copyright is 1985!

Oh, I assumed it was like some super-new programming language. I'm still under the impression that the only language that existed in 1985 was BASIC.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

LaTeX isn't even a programming language.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

xpost and maybe LOGO.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

LaTeX is like, I dunno, HTML X-TREEEEEEEEEEM. It's for layout, especially designed for complicated math formulas and the like.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:07 (twenty years ago)

I won a graphics contest in third grade using Logo. Glory days, ah, they'll pass you by...

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:08 (twenty years ago)

i have been looking at apartment listings. where do people look for apts when they're searching? craigslist, the reader, where else? i have a while to look (for a two bedroom! i will be living with a friend and two cats, woohoo!) but it's still going to drive me crazy because my default setting is some level of crazy.

most successful for me was walking around the neighborhood in which i wanted to live and looked for 'for rent' signs. but hey! i just moved out of a two bedroom on augusta that was a pretty nice place. where you looking to go?
