I think it counts 'friends in common' that you might have with the proposed FB friend, and those who have the most FIC wind up in Suggestions.

Not related to this immediate discussion, but I'm assuming that facebook store full chat logs indefinitely as well (cf. article linked to above in rumpus). Would be interesting if they use any filtering and analysis on the frequency, length and even content of chats to manage your account 'better'...?
― krakow, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 23:57 (sixteen years ago)
FB apparently decides who your best friends are by how many times you interact with them on facebook, click on their profile etc. But I mainly use FB as a really passive way of keeping in touch - emailing or chatting to my best friends outside of FB. I don't ever really click on someone's profile - usually it's if I've suddenly remembered they exist or if I heard they got married and want to see what their other half looks like. So it's kind of the wrong way round for me.
In any case this shouldn't affect whose status/news/etc comes up in my live feed, should it?

A friend of mine posted this on FB:
"If your facebook been running slow lately, go to 'application settings' and change the dropdown box to 'added to profile'. If you see one in there called 'unnamed app', delete it. Its an internal spybot. Pass this on." Worked for me. BUT: doing this also deleted the "boxes" tab on my profile (don't matter for me).
I found the application and deleted it, and this seems to have made things work better. But I wonder what the removed application was all about? Some sort of internal data-gathering thing? If it was, why would FB allow you to remove it so easily?

I dont have such an app - I'm someone who never allow apps to add themselves to anything of mine, but that said I havent used an app in a long time and have deleted/blocked most others. If people randomly click apps such as quizzes without thinking theyre bound to end up with a virus.

there are only about 5 lamebook variations anyway: parent or other middle aged relative makes inappropriate comment, someone tells someone else they have a small penis, someone has a hilariously misspelled profile, someone posts a picture with people groping each other in the background...

okay i posted this on noize but wanted to run this by a bigger group to see if this is happening to anyone else....this is weird:this chick i was dating a couple years ago just showed up in my feed. back story: we dated a few months, i broke it off, she got pissed, she deleted me from her friends list a while back (i noticed sometime ~1-2 years ago). neither she nor i have ever requested to be FB friends again after this.and now out of the blue, she's on the top of my feed. i click on her profile to see if she's tried to add me as a friend or if i'd inadvertently clicked hers when looking at our mutual friends' profile (the couple who set us up just had a baby) but no, no pending friendship request.is this a new feature or something? "People You Used To Be Friends With!"addendum: she's still FB friends with jaxon even though they met *once*, when we all went to see Herc+Love Affair & Danny Wang. also, still FB friends with my friend in London who we went out to dinner with once.― ┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, December 22, 2009 6:34 PM (1 month ago)

no, i get how that works, this is wholly different... just creepy that FB knows your gmail contacts and is teasing you with peeks at their private profile.

― t(o_o)t (ENBB), Sunday, 7 February 2010 19:51 (sixteen years ago)
fb is wicked fd up - my feed is having an aneurysm - not sure if thats related to the new design or what
― ice cr?m, Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:00 (sixteen years ago)
I dont like this new design: I filtered my news page by "status update" and they've now hidden that buried in the "friends" menu and you cant force it to the top anymore.
And using "latest updates" new feed is flaky as shit. If i re-click on it a couple times, posts disappear and reappear, it randomly says "no more posts to display!" and stuff.
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:18 (sixteen years ago)
So no it isnt much better, because in simplifying it they've removed the ability to do filtering ppl like me knew how to do grrrr.
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 7 February 2010 20:19 (sixteen years ago)
I think it's got past that age where everyone is supposed to decide it's shit and no-one's twigged so they've made it actually shit.
Anyone remember their Friendster login?
― requiem for a team (onimo), Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:53 (sixteen years ago)
I never even looked at friendster or orkut.
People are also whining that livejournal's become a graveyard but it suits many purposes for me FB never can, so...
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:09 (sixteen years ago)
OK Ive just read through a dozen questions on the FB help centre and *everyone* is saying the new news feed forced upon them isnt working properly, which is what I'm seeing. I'll see a bunch of posts from 5-20 mins ago, hit reload, and theyre gone, as are half the rest of the feed, as if it's "skimming" my feed. DO NOT WANT.

Yeah, it doesn't work for shit. Mine has been showing the same five "new" updates all afternoon. Refresh just makes those go away.

― spay or neuter your blue dog (suzy), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 00:21 (sixteen years ago)
Desperate for reassurance there was a mistake, she tried over and over to ring her brother.
"I kept ringing and messaging but couldn't get on to him. So I rang Mum and said: 'Chris Naylor must have died - I just read it on Facebook. But where's Bobby? People are writing 'RIP Bobby' too.'
"Mum said 'Bobby was with Chris Naylor last night'."
How nice of mum to, I dunno, let her own daughters know their brother had died.

I still wish they'd fix the chat function.
― Cunga, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:29 (sixteen years ago)
I think what people are missing here is not that the design itself is disliked - its neat, tidy and I like it fine - its that the news feed is BROKEN ON PURPOSE.
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:30 (sixteen years ago)
i think the news feed is broken by accident actually?
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:37 (sixteen years ago)
some sort of combination of the two is my guess
― ice cr?m, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:38 (sixteen years ago)
one thing (and i don't know if this has been discussed because i never really follow this thread) is that news feed will limit the number of yr total friends that show up unless you tell it not to--this is in the options at the bottom of the feed.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:40 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah CAD that options bit is what I regard as "broken on purpose", to wit:Live Feed automatically determines which friends to include based on who Facebook thinks you want to hear from most. You can manually adjust this list below.
OK, fair enough... maybe... except it doesnt work. I've added a large list of friends, and it promptly "forgets" the list. I go back into edit and it isnt there anymore. It retains my "hide" ones fine but not the "show more" list.
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:49 (sixteen years ago)
Its the "based on who Facebook thinks you want to hear from" that annoys me.
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:50 (sixteen years ago)
it defaulted to 250 and i have like 330 friends so i just bumped it to 500--no idea if it's working because of the other issues they're having. but the point of live feed i thought was just to give you the newest information--what would facebook be without weird updates from people you don't really care about??
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:51 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I don't think its working right at all. I mean mine is set to a max of 250 friends and I have way less than that in total anyway. But I'm only seeing updates from the same 4 or 5 people. My wife, who shares many of my friends, is seeing different updates from the people that I should normally be seeing.
― you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 02:53 (sixteen years ago)
