ok then, if i ran my age in minutes i would DEFINITELY win.
― Maria, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:45 (sixteen years ago)
There is no way I could run a 10K in 30 minutes. Hell, my 8K time is around 40 minutes, it would be fantastic if I could run my age in that.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:46 (sixteen years ago)
Only two runners got under 30 mins in our local 10k and that was out of a field of 2,500.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:53 (sixteen years ago)
This is how it works: http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/agegradingcalculator/0,7977,s6-238-277-415-0-0-0-0,00.html
Put your times and age into the calculator and it calculates whether you're local, regional , national class etc. My 5K time is just under 60% (i.e just about local class).
If I could run 10K in 48 mins, that would be 63%. (Shit, I've got some way to go!)
Jeff your 8K time of 40 mins puts you at around 59% i.e the same level as my 5K.
― Dr.C, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:58 (sixteen years ago)
My 5K target is 22mins, which I definitely think I can do in the next couple of months. That would be around 66%.
― Dr.C, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:00 (sixteen years ago)
Oh man, I am nowhere near even approaching "local" class, ever! I am pretty close to the age of people who compete in college athletics though.
― Maria, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)
Am doing a ridiculous race this weekend - Southern Counties cross-country champs as part of a team. Going to be so out of my depth. It's four laps of a 2.5 mile course, think there's every chance I'll get lapped (only once I hope, but who knows?). Have heard horror stories of people losing their shoes *forever* in the mud. Going in the tenth race of the day and it'll be pretty churned up by then so I'm expecting the worst.
I do have a cold on its way though, wouldn't it be such a shame if I had to give it a miss?
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)
Whoa - that sounds fun, Nick! Don't forget to report back on how it went (if you escape the mud)
― Dr.C, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 16:13 (sixteen years ago)
That's a cool tool. I also like the McMillan calculator. Just put in one time for a specific distance and it will gauge what your equivalent performance will be at other distances. Lots of other good info as well.
So if my best 5K time is 22:53, then I should be able to run a marathon in 3:43:00. Assuming proper training leading up to it.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 16:55 (sixteen years ago)
i was running in the park last week and this girl who was apparently training for the boston marathon had her previous 2 marathon times on a shirt and they were like 3:28 and 3:30 and i was like, lady, piss off as she wooshed past me.
― actually if you want to get technical about it i am sort of down. (tehresa), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 18:55 (sixteen years ago)
OK, I was all set to run, but then on my walk home from the train station I decided not to. It wasn't so much the cold and the snow, but the stupid wind, which makes it feel like 4 degrees F as opposed to the 19 F it actually is. I really hate winter.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:20 (sixteen years ago)
Has anyone had knee pain then successfully got over it? What did you do?
― Vasco da Gama, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:10 (sixteen years ago)
I used to have really bad knee pains when I started, but they went when I got better (for me) shoes. Still get odd pains every now and again if I overdo it. Nothing very serious, I just take a couple of ibuprofen and rest for a couple of days.
In general I'd say get decent shoes that work for you, build up your distance slowly, and run on softer surfaces if possible.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:22 (sixteen years ago)
i never get knee pain and i'm so glad my shins have gotten mostly better. occasional tenderness but really NOTHING compared to a few months ago, and no ibuprofen needed. i have some arch pain today, which i think is a result of wearing heels for the first time in ages yesterday, but it was kind of putting a damper on my running this afternoon :(
― tehresa, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:35 (sixteen years ago)
I've had very little pain, knee or otherwise since I got custom insoles from my podatrist.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:38 (sixteen years ago)
i tried putting my superfeet (the pink ones) in my running shoes last week to see if i would feel like a running champ but i ended up having a terrible run with a lot of shin pain (like, back to october kind of pain, it was scary) so i just went back to the insoles that came in the shoes.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:40 (sixteen years ago)
I tried superfeet, but didn't like them. The custom ones are great, they take a cast of your foot and a couple of weeks later you have an insole that fits you foot perfectly.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:50 (sixteen years ago)
that sounds nice!the superfeet are fine for hiking, but definitely a dnw for running, i guess :(
― tehresa, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:54 (sixteen years ago)
I'm actually running 30m+ in a week, and I'm never 'in pain' - it's just that if I run 6m+ on concurrent days I develop a slight cracking noise in my knees, and then I know I need to take time off to avoid progression to crunching noises, then proper pain. So my main problem is that this dictates my rest days, and I'm very wary of running half marathon type distances, or pushing my speed ever.
I really enjoyed the first phase of getting into running, the psychological challenge, but now the limiting factor is these tedious worries about my knees and I rarely ever get to run fast or long enough to really get tired.
Maybe I need to restrict my milage and slowly build back up.
― Vasco da Gama, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:28 (sixteen years ago)
You're doing pretty well if you're running 30 mile weeks IMO! To be honest, my legs don't feel all that great when I'm doing that sort of mileage either. If endurance is your goal, you could try doing longer runs, but build more rest into your schedule to help you recover. I'd say that one ten mile run would be doing more for your basic endurance than two six mile runs, so don't worry too much about taking an extra day off.

I haven't ran in a week. I hate running in single digit and windy weather. I can do it if it is sunny outside, but my only times I can run are when it is dark; early in the morning or after work.
I'm signing up for a rock climbing class in February, at least that will give me some sort of physical activity during the month. And work on my pitiful upper body strength.
― Jeff, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:42 (sixteen years ago)
Always wanted to give climbing a go. Bet my upper body strength is worse than your's though.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Friday, 29 January 2010 23:16 (sixteen years ago)
I've never tried it, will be my first time. Most importantly, it will be indoors and warm!
― Jeff, Friday, 29 January 2010 23:41 (sixteen years ago)
oooh where are you going? d and i have been looking for a place to do indoor rock climbing.
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Saturday, 30 January 2010 01:14 (sixteen years ago)
Lakeview Athletic Club, right down the street from me. There was a deal on youswoop.com yesterday to get 6 hours of climbing lessons for $60. Normally $125, so I got it.
― Jeff, Saturday, 30 January 2010 01:21 (sixteen years ago)
iiiiiinteresting
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Saturday, 30 January 2010 01:25 (sixteen years ago)
Actually, there is five left of the deal, you could go to the evanston location.

thanks! we're totally gonna do it.
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Saturday, 30 January 2010 01:34 (sixteen years ago)
I still have my rei free pinnacle climb but I'm scared to do it bc I don't think I will live up to my 15-year old self's performance.
― tehresa, Saturday, 30 January 2010 02:57 (sixteen years ago)
broke off an 8 mile run today, felt good
think i was energized from housing an entire plate of nachos myself last nite

Good job johnny crunch
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Saturday, 30 January 2010 19:29 (sixteen years ago)
well done!
I did 11. Way more than I should have, considering how low my mileage has been recently. Hurts just to walk around now. No regrets though. Always good to get out there, no matter what happens.
― Jeff, Saturday, 30 January 2010 19:30 (sixteen years ago)
Get on the ibuprofen imo. Decent distance for a slacker that is. ;)
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Saturday, 30 January 2010 19:35 (sixteen years ago)
Talking of slackers, I totally skived off the race I was supposed to do this weekend. Feeling a bit iffy, so I thought that getting my arsed kicked round a cold Hampstead Heath in the mud would be a bit counter-productive fitness-wise. Went and dug my veg patch instead, not sure that counts as cross-training.

There was a good set of pictures in the Guardian today from the Tough Guy race in the UK. NOt sure I really like the whole novelty aspect of the event, but the photos do make it look unremittingly grim...

wow that looks like a war moviewith superman.
― tehresa, Sunday, 31 January 2010 23:20 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, the whole thing is themed around famous battles. There is this one section I was reading about called the Vietcong Tunnels or something where competitors have to crawl through these long narrow tunnels, partly submerged in water and filth. There are three of them to choose from, two of which are blocked up at the far end so you have to crawl out backwards in the dark (assuming that there are no other folks right behind you blocking your way). Sounds horrific.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Sunday, 31 January 2010 23:25 (sixteen years ago)
haha, wonder if that's any fun. not the tunnel part, at least.
steeling myself to get back into the monthly-mileage-goal routine starting tomorrow. it's cooold though!
― Maria, Monday, 1 February 2010 00:31 (sixteen years ago)
I ended up with 30 miles in January. At least that is more than I had in December. I want to do 50 in February, 75 in March and hopefully be back up to 100 a month in April.
Chicago marathon registration opens today. Still on the fence about that one.
― Jeff, Monday, 1 February 2010 13:28 (sixteen years ago)
i think i had around 40 in january, i was thinking i'd just jump back up to 100 in february and see how that went. but given that i managed to injure myself at the very beginning of january after a 100 mile december, and that my ipod stopped working for no reason at all yesterday that may not happen. i'm pretty bummed over the ipod, since my motivation for running is actually about 95% "opportunity to listen to use up excess energy listening to metal" and i was really looking forward to it today!
― Maria, Monday, 1 February 2010 13:42 (sixteen years ago)
Just been totting mine up as it happens:
Runs Logged 18 Miles Logged 102.8
Not great for where I should be, but I missed about 10 days with illness/lazyitis.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Monday, 1 February 2010 13:42 (sixteen years ago)
x-post RIP iPod :(
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Monday, 1 February 2010 13:43 (sixteen years ago)
lazyitis is a terrible affliction.
ipod may still be under extended warranty, if i can actually find the paperwork. otherwise, i will probably replace it with a new nano out of my new computer savings fund, which is a really bad idea financially but pretty hard to resist when you use it as much as i do.
― Maria, Monday, 1 February 2010 13:49 (sixteen years ago)
My headphones keep crapping out. I have these, which are fantastic. Except for the way sweat leaks into my shuffle and causes it to go haywire and stop working about 3 miles into my run. I need another option, but I hate to go back to wires.
― Jeff, Monday, 1 February 2010 14:31 (sixteen years ago)
my motivation for running is actually about 95% "opportunity to listen to use up excess energy listening to metal" me too! sisterz. i got a nano not too long ago and i love it for running/exercise. it's so light and i don't mind the ear buds because i can change the song/volume without looking at or fumbling with anything. worth it imo.
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 1 February 2010 15:04 (sixteen years ago)
wait, it's not a nano. it's a shuffle.
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 1 February 2010 15:05 (sixteen years ago)
I visited that Arriva site. Those are terrific for running and working out at the gym....but skiing and cycling??

Got the early cushion feeling of a blister w/ minimal soreness (on my sole behind my toes), fine to walk on but felt a little funny on Sunday night. Wondering whether yr collective expertise dictates I shld just run on it or rest it for however long you think would be good?
― ogmor, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:34 (sixteen years ago)
run with diff socks?
― tehresa, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:35 (sixteen years ago)
you mean thick socks will be fine to run w/ proto blister or for 'in future'?
