this season's premise (that his wife is allowing him to sleep with another woman as a 10th anniversary present) is completely absurd, and the opener wasn't as funny as it should have been. But the next episode looked better.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah that 10th anniversary episode was nonsense...the whole doctors examining room phone thing hurt my head. hope it gets better...

so yes so far the basic outlines have slipped may pang.

saza bob, Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It's in its fourth season now, right?

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know there was even a second season.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 10 January 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

this is is the fourth season, yes.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 11 January 2004 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The "wife letting him sleep with someone else" premise is a little silly, but not as silly as it sounds on paper. The deal is, when they decided to get married, she said, "What, are you nervous about never sleeping with anyone else? Tell you what. You marry me, and you can sleep with someone else as a 10th anniversary present." So he mentions it as a joke, but it's pushed into reality by the fact that she says she doesn't think he can do it, anyway. So now it's a challenge.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 11 January 2004 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And besides, you have to put the completely absurd aside. All of the plots are incredibly contrived, just as they were on Seinfeld. It's kind of Larry David's calling card.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 11 January 2004 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The best bits are the little moments between him and his wife. His wife is sitting up in bed and Larry comes out of the bathroom:

"I think I found the perfect pair of socks. They're not quite white, because you don't want white..."

She shoots him a look of pointed boredom.

"Is this boring to you? Because if someone said to me they'd found the perfect socks, I'd say, 'Really? Where'd you get them? WHat are they like?'"

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 11 January 2004 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Watched this for the first time today, hilarious. Why why why are all the best shows only on cable?

dleone (dleone), Sunday, 18 January 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

This is pretty much the only good show right now

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 18 January 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Kenan's description just totally made me want to see this show.

ryan (ryan), Sunday, 18 January 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

(the wife deserves like a Thalberg or something)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 18 January 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

we need a thread about people who pop into our minds when we are doing that one thing.

Other wives popping in = classic

don weiner, Monday, 19 January 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

A brilliant stroke is having Ben Stiller play himself as a sort of flip side to Larry David - both characters are jerks, but Ben knows what the rules are (the "no gifts" thing, being polite about the bedazzled sports sweatshirts, etc.). The second episode of this season had me cringing the entire time...how does Larry have *any* friends?

Favorite moments:
Larry commenting inappropriately on Mary in the Nativity scene.
Cheri Oteri singing the Looney Tunes song and mentioning that her suitcase doesn't have wheels.
The restaurant swear-fest. (this was a lot funnier than it probably should have been)
Larry's confused look, watching club soda and salt being applied to his wife's blouse.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Monday, 19 January 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

maura (maura), Monday, 19 January 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Very good show.

Star Hustler, Monday, 19 January 2004 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Great article, maura.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 19 January 2004 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i too enjoyed the article

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Monday, 19 January 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The first season just came out on DVD - we watched them all yesterday and the day before. I was falling over laughing - now of course I wish the rest of it was on DVD, but no, I guess we have to wait a year for the 2nd season... We don't have the premium cable channels, so we do this with Sopranos and Six Feet Under as well - a feast for a few days, and then a whole year to wait for more (and avoid spoilers if we can).

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! i didn't know larry david really had a movie called "prognosis negative" or worked as a bra salesman - two choice seinfeld show moments.

mike a, Tuesday, 20 January 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
the doll the doll the doll

see ar (see ar), Thursday, 5 February 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Taking a woman in a burqa to Canter's was unbelievable.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

So CLASSIC.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"the dog bit my PENIS!!!!!"

Chris V (Chris V), Thursday, 5 February 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The Doll is awesome.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course it's brilliant. Comedy is redeemed as a high art.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and the scene this week where they pretend to be WASP-like to get into the country club - with just a few key gestures. I was laughing my ass off.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Man oh man. I just rented the first season on DVD (well, only half, actually, cuz the video store only rents it one disc at a time) -- hifuckinlarious.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 7 February 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"The prostitutes don't seem to mind it"!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 7 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
The whole "bi-racial" doll thing was fantastic.

This show is way better than Seinfeld.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

First series DVD is now on my list of "Official Reccomendations for Everyone on Earth"

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"We don't say 'mulatto' anymore."

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

also...
"If you want a blowjob at a reasonable rate, she's your girl!"

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I have all three series on DVD and I think series 3 is the best, although I'm only halfway through watching it. "Club Soda & Salt" is fantastic.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never identified with any film/tv/literary character more than I do with Larry David. My whole life is now totally WWLDD?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 6 March 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"he's a survivor"

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I pulled an LD last night at a bar, and was so proud of myself. This smelly guy at the bar tried to shake my hand, and I shook his arm instead.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

god that last episode was so fucking good

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the survivor episode? the reflection from the glass eye had me rollin.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

gina gershon as a sexy hasid... uh, rowr.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"uh the first one"

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

This last episode was only meh (but still a 9.5/10 on the panTV scale).

I find that Curb Your Enthusiasm has somehow made me love L.A. even more! Adam, you should really move down here. We'll meet for lunch, drive around in a Prius, and yell at each other.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend LeRoy is Larry David's personal chef. I keep hoping he shows up in an episode. But I don't have cable, so I'd miss it anyway.

Maria D., Tuesday, 9 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"uh the first one"

best line ever. one of the blessings of improv?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"does anyone have a sponge?"

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I might actually buy an iPod if only to have the theme song play as I drive/walk around L.A.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! I am downloading that right now.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

There MUST be a Curb Your Enthusiasm celly ringtone!!! Looking now!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

CLASSIC so classic.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I rewatched the pilot last night, having previously thought it inferior to the series. It isn't.

"I find that I always nod to black people."

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 13 March 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the premise of the Seinfeld finale indicting the cast as villains all along but the execution came off as a pandering catchphrase-laden victory lap, but the fatwa season inverted that premise (Larry being tried and judged to be the hero the entire time... in the eyes of Iran's secret police!) and I think that worked much better!

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 22:52 (two years ago)

Right and that one brought back a bunch of minor characters so I can’t imagine he'll do that again

I thought the idea of Young Larry becoming a huge hit was a good premise for the final season but it hasn’t been mentioned since episode 1

frogbs, Wednesday, 27 March 2024 23:30 (two years ago)

Best to treat it as a sitcom that happens to have season-long arcs, rather than expecting in to culminate in some multi-season culmination.

paisley got boring (Eazy), Thursday, 28 March 2024 00:26 (two years ago)

ok so one thing that kinda bothered me about this one was Larry needing "clearance" to talk to Conan, when in reality if anything it would be the reverse

but it got me wondering how big a celebrity Larry is in the Curb universe - obviously the show Curb doesn't exist within Curb so isn't it likely no one but Seinfeld nerds would actually know who Larry David was? so how does a show like Young Larry get made? would anyone watch a sitcom about Chuck Lorre's childhood?

frogbs, Thursday, 28 March 2024 03:31 (two years ago)

In the Curb world, he has a hit sitcom on the air right now doesn’t he?

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Thursday, 28 March 2024 03:38 (two years ago)

yes but only as of this season and it's his first post-Seinfeld endeavor that actually works out. outside of appearing in the Producers I think?

frogbs, Thursday, 28 March 2024 03:52 (two years ago)

New episode is a doozie…couple of great guest appearances too

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Monday, 1 April 2024 09:15 (two years ago)

Feels repetitive having "the help traumatized by something accidentally sexual" and "lol gender names/pronouns" but still fun.

paisley got boring (Eazy), Monday, 1 April 2024 18:28 (two years ago)

After "Curb Your Enthusiasm," J.B. Smoove wants to play a Bond villain: "I’d like to shoot somebody in the ass." https://t.co/AZ2P9s9Nlh

I decided to rewatch from when the Blacks showed up and nearly wet myself laughing so much the other night. So fucking funny.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 4 April 2024 19:34 (two years ago)

the fact that it's not really explained why he's still living with him after 10+ years is hilarious

frogbs, Thursday, 4 April 2024 19:42 (two years ago)

Yes!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 4 April 2024 19:53 (two years ago)

Omg it's the happy ending one.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 4 April 2024 19:53 (two years ago)

all caught up for the finale tonight, these plotlines are getting increasingly contrived and I can't help but notice how much they resemble the King's Quest games. so you have to take the masseuse to meet Bruce Springsteen in order to get her to drop a sexual harrassment claim? alright, whatever

frogbs, Sunday, 7 April 2024 16:44 (two years ago)

Matt Berry was hilarious though

frogbs, Sunday, 7 April 2024 16:45 (two years ago)

also kinda feels like a bunch of this episode got cut out, weird they kept referencing the zipper thing with no real payoff, also the Ken/Kendra thing was pretty weird

frogbs, Sunday, 7 April 2024 16:47 (two years ago)

Richard Lewis Mercedes scenes were hard to watch

calstars, Sunday, 7 April 2024 17:45 (two years ago)

I don't watch many TV series, so it's wild to remember watching this for the first time so long ago. Missed S1, and now checking the dates on S2 am amazed it's Sept-Nov 2001, post-9/11.

paisley got boring (Eazy), Monday, 8 April 2024 00:41 (two years ago)

Yeah I remember my mom and uncle geeking out over this and me thinking it was really boring lol

frogbs, Monday, 8 April 2024 01:27 (two years ago)

well that was about what I expected, appreciated the little meta twist there

did think it was odd that the plotline with Richard Lewis's girlfriend was never resolved, seemed possible that she actually was gonna murder him

frogbs, Monday, 8 April 2024 14:12 (two years ago)

yeah that would’ve been great. also missed opportunity for an extra seinfeld finale tie-in to have their plane nearly crash (would’ve been accidentally topical too with the boeing stuff in the news)

leon watching seinfeld was the funniest

wonder what larry will do next, if anything. maybe another movie?

flopson, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:02 (two years ago)

I thought when it was revealed that Leon was watching Seinfeld that he would get all the way up to the finale, come up with some really dumb idea of how they could've gotten out of it, only to have it work in the Curb universe. or it would backfire tremdendously.

frogbs, Monday, 8 April 2024 17:56 (two years ago)

Yeah, that makes a ton of sense, as a way to have that Leon-watching-Seinfeld work pay off in a plot way. The plots this season were so sloppy in that way (someone mentioned the zipper, too), but hey, still fun.

paisley got boring (Eazy), Monday, 8 April 2024 18:48 (two years ago)

this was one of the best seasons in years imo. definitely went out on a high note

flopson, Monday, 8 April 2024 18:50 (two years ago)

Ah good to hear. Been waiting til it’s all done to watch the least season.

I Chet the Holmgren (Spottie), Monday, 8 April 2024 19:08 (two years ago)

lmao he really does act the same way irl as he does on the show

After 12 seasons, many viewers lament the passing of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Larry David’s sour, pseudo bio-series. I’m not a fan, because Larry truly is the self-righteous, snobby, self-loathing, narcissistic ass he portrays. That opinion is informed by an outdoor afternoon…

— Geraldo Rivera (@GeraldoRivera) April 8, 2024

frogbs, Tuesday, 9 April 2024 03:28 (two years ago)

If Alan Dershowitz did not exist Larry David would have had to invent him

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 9 April 2024 14:20 (two years ago)

What's the timeline on that Geraldo story -- didn't Larry also have a feud going with Dershowitz?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 9 April 2024 15:00 (two years ago)

I’m so ready to leave this series in the dust but in retrospect of Lewis’s passing the last scene was a +
