the heat's rotten. it makes me sleep all the time and then i feel worse when i wake up. i've found that iced tea for some reason makes me feel much cooler than cold water though, so drink lots of iced tea.

Yeah, down with heat. It's the best summer in London in ages!

jel --, Thursday, 4 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

the best thing to do in this heat is to get all worked up, slam a Corona, and then go outside and run around. Soon the heat and the exhaustion and the beer kicks in, and it's as if you drank the whole case. Everything slowwwwss doooown. Then go take an ice cold shower. Ah boredom.

Days like these call for a mint jeulip, a lawn chair and a white hankerchief so you can dab your furrowed brow and say...

Woooooo...!

Just like that.

You guys are sissies. The New Orleans summer is kickin' in and you'll sweat through your shirt standing in the shade. It is gross beyond words but sweat is the great equalizer: everyone is a sweaty goon right now--cops can't fuck with you 'cause they're all dripping and panting, no one's gonna mug you 'cause they can't run away, even the three-card monte scammers are too wiped to hustle.

The murder rate goes way up in the summer, of course--you can shoot someone from air-conditioned comfort.

I got pretty used to it being in the 110-115º F range, but now it's in the high 80s/late 90s. If it were 5-10º cooler, I would adore it, but as it stands it just feels like the weather is TEASING me. "It could be Fall, but....naw. Haha."

It's October 1, 10:53 PM and it's still 70 degrees. And tomorrow's high is forecasted to be 80. I am ANGRY and I want searing, skin-shattering cold. I have since summer began. I even wanted it in February when we had weeks of record lows.

Bring it on.

As my father always used to say, "You can always put on more layers in winter." (In summer you can only get so naked and still be miserable.)

Believe me, anyone I encounter in the dead soupy heat of summer has their lives in danger.

Jesse, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm really skinny, anemic, and have poor circulation. Winter is just 4 months of shivering for me. I live in Chicago because I hate myself, obv.

But then again it isnt blindingly hot.

Trayce, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I complain about too hot when the snow starts to melt. Not being contrary for its own sake, but summer makes me cranky, miserable, and depressed. I stay inside next to the A/C that is cranked to the coldest setting.

Like so many people in Chicago I have radiators with a mind of their own, so even when it's 10 degrees outside, I open the windows and let the wind in.

Jesse, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 04:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Not being contrary for its own sake, but summer makes me cranky, miserable, and depressed.

Get rid of "depressed" and I echo your feelings. I anticipate the first snowstom of winter with much glee.
And fall is my favorite.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 06:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Fall is wonderful. Though I don't appreciate how summer is encroaching on it. But in its purest form it is delightful--cool, sometimes sunny, sometimes drizzly, and the smells are the best.

O hi. I am going to bitch here now.

The A/C completely died in our office suite. It's 87 degrees here and hotter inside. It looks like we will have to replace the entire system since fixing it would be an epic undertaking. I'm so fucking hot.

Jesse, Monday, 8 October 2007 19:40 (sixteen years ago) link

There's an old Frontline episode (I think it originally aired in 2000) where a climate denying scientist says even if it happens, global warming isn't a big deal because people prefer hot weather. Thought about that guy today and if he's still alive I hope he's f-ing roasting outside.

birdistheword, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 17:45 (three days ago) link

i haven't gone outside today. probably pretty hot.

scott seward, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 19:21 (three days ago) link

My mom, who lives in the woods in NJ, texted to tell me it was 89 degrees near her yesterday but her little house wasn't hot enough to require the AC yet. Meanwhile, it was 47 degrees when I went out to pick up lunch (tacos al pastor). 47 degrees. In June. The heat in my apartment came on last night. Summer is gonna be about six weeks long here, I think - mid July to end of August, and it'll be snowing again by October.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Tuesday, 18 June 2024 19:26 (three days ago) link

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 18 June 2024 19:28 (three days ago) link

Thought about that guy today and if he's still alive I hope he's f-ing roasting outside.

He died in 2020:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Singer

From the Frontline episode:

FRED SINGER: We have to ask what are the impacts of a warmer climate? What is the impact on agriculture? The answer is, it's positive. It's good. What's the impact on forests of greater levels of CO2 and greater temperatures? It's good. What is the impact on water supplies? It's neutral. What is the impact on recreation? It's mixed. You get, on the one hand, perhaps less skiing. On the other hand, you get more sunshine and maybe better beach weather.

Let's face it, people like warmer climates. There's a good reason why much of the U.S. population is moving into sun belt, and not just people who are retiring.

jaymc, Tuesday, 18 June 2024 19:34 (three days ago) link

Currently 32C with a "feels like" of 42C here (that's about 90F / 108F). I'm fine indoors for now, but I guess I'm going to have to install my window air conditioner tonight. I gotta go outside in a about 20 minutes to go pick up my kids from school (~10 minute walk), will report back.

Geniune question - you don't find it depressing?! I used to love rainy days but I'm at my fucking wits end here. This is not a summer. The sun was out for 1 hour yesterday and I was happy by the afternoon I was ready to sleep it all away again. This is just so miserable this year.

xps to ENBB

there was a stunning thunderstorm here yesterday, the heaviest rain I've seen in a long time - it was awesome - the kind of weather that makes me happy. Hot sunny days make me lethargic and long sustained periods of hot summer weather (thankfully a rarity in the UK) always seem to coincide with periods of depression, and heatwaves are an absolute nightmare to me, torture. That 40° + day a couple of years back, I had all the curtains drawn and windows shut and was just about coping with a fan cooling me and then I had to do some cooking and didn't have a microwave at the time. lol, I was on the verge of crying.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 09:54 (two days ago) link

Yesterday had more than 1hr of sun but it was all in the AM - luckily I was on Hampstead Heath supervising a whippet zoom call, so got vitamin D and endorphins.

I’m going to Washington and Annapolis in about 10 days to see friends and part of me is dreading the extremes of heat and humidity.

something that doesn't bode well for me. i was out today a little bit and i REALLY don't like breathing in extremely hot air. it has gotten worse as i have aged. it never used to bother me much. i don't know if it has anything to do with being a smoker for so many years. my lungs are healthy. it just really makes me breathe heavy and takes the wind out of me in a way that it never used to. maybe that's why Walgreens sells little portable oxygen tanks now.
