It even allows backgrounding! Kidnda. If you ask it to, it opens the stream you're listening to in safari, and then you can click home and get on with other stuff while it plays in the background.

Oh, that'd be sweet. Key question: does it get BBC stations? I'm using the similarly named but different TuneIn.FM iCar Radio and for my limited needs it's pretty lovely.

Sleep Cycle update: did a really nice job of waking me up just as I was waking up this morning, if you see what I mean. So ... OK, OK, I WAS WRONG. It happens. A lot.

Error: No Error (grimly fiendish), Saturday, 23 January 2010 12:54 (sixteen years ago)

Got Sleep Cycle. On night 4 and it works, but I'm sure I wake up in anticipation of it waking me up. I suppose that still means it works.

Jblujlama (ljubljana), Saturday, 23 January 2010 12:56 (sixteen years ago)

It gets BBC stations (including local BBC), but they don't have backgroundable streams, annoyingly.

JimD, Saturday, 23 January 2010 13:27 (sixteen years ago)

this happens to me all the time wrt to regular alarm clocks, except I'll usually do so 2, 3 hours before the scheduled time :{

Okay, I'm looking for a solution where I can sit down once a week, and make to do lists for each day in the coming week, and then have it sync w/ the phone over the air. Do I really need to buy an app and join some god damn GTD cult to do this? Can I seriously not do it with google and/or ical?

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 01:11 (sixteen years ago)

you can make google cal sync with the calendar app on iphone over the air...

i'm with stupid ☞ (dyao), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 01:13 (sixteen years ago)

There's a website that does exactly this but I can't remember the name at all; will search for a link

stet, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 01:51 (sixteen years ago)

I've used Remember the Milk for years for todo's. It's a paid service though, at least if you want to use the iPhone app to sync with the web client.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 01:55 (sixteen years ago)

PS I'm seriously fascinated with this special (and ridiculous) type of rage I feel/have observed where you're all "why the fuck won't my future tricorder do the Exact Thing I want?!?!?"

stet that would be lovely btw

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 01:59 (sixteen years ago)

Ah it's http://teuxdeux.com -- the iphone app isn't out yet, but it's coming shortly

stet, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 13:58 (sixteen years ago)

looks interesting.. "teux deux" is pronounced "tuh duh" in french though, not sure that's what they had in mind??

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:02 (sixteen years ago)

Re: Sleep Cycle. Don’t: argue with ex on the phone, go to sleep furious with self and ex, knock iphone onto floor while throwing self around in sleep at 4am, pick it up, knock it off again, pick it up again, then go into flatliner-sleep at 5.30 am, giving app no choice but to set off the alarm at 6 as set. Graph shows furious dreaming, much of which I unfortunately remember.

Jblujlama (ljubljana), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

I am very close to starting a 'post your sleep cycle graph' thread

i'm with stupid ☞ (dyao), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:31 (sixteen years ago)

hahah yeah every morning I wonder if there's some kind of sleep cycle watercooler thread!

spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

last week i had some nice flatlining going on

since the weekend things have been more like this :-/

Crackle Box, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

that looks pretty healthy to me!

take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:57 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that's what mine mostly look like

spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

only had an iphone since christmas and oh boy, i don't know how i'd manage without it. my last phone was ~7 years old with buttons missing.

favourite apps:

trivial pursuit - good for falling out with the gf, feeling stupid, being bored in a pub.

spotify - in cambridge we get a really good 3g signal, moving to london in a few days, will test it out there. it crashes a lot, but eh, a lot of music for £10. currently assembling a playlist the massive list of tracks from the 70s that was posted on ILM a while back.

karajan - really good for practicing your aural skills if you're into that sort of thing. recognising intervals, chords, scales, etc works really well

jasuto - its fun making little synths

what's the name of the eno oblique strategies app? no luck searching app store :(

Crackle Box, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

figured this was a good night's sleep

Crackle Box, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

that's a good night's coma.

take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

crackle that's gotta be phone on the floor, no?

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

nope, phone in the same place every night.

Crackle Box, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

London's generally fine, Crackle. The odd drop out and blank spot, but few and far between. Quite a lot of open zones as well, which the iphone automatically joins for free.

'virgin' should be 'wizard' (GamalielRatsey), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

what's that wkpedia "hypnogramme"?

spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 16:38 (sixteen years ago)

some really shitty graph that gives a vague indication of proper sleep cycles - you should be going in and out of deep sleep every 90mins or so.

take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 16:43 (sixteen years ago)

what's the name of the eno oblique strategies app? no luck searching app store :(

Hmm. It's called Oblique -- I've got it here on my phone -- but you're right, it's not on the store any more. Anyone know any more about that?

Crackle: LOL/WTF/etc at your coma-graph!

I am very close to starting a 'post your sleep cycle graph' thread

Despite everything I said upthread, I like this idea now. And this app.

Stet: yes, I know. I fucking know. Fuck off.

Error: No Error (grimly fiendish), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 23:45 (sixteen years ago)

so dramatic

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:47 (sixteen years ago)

*Swishes cape. Falls over*

Error: No Error (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

(For context: since about 2000, there's been a horribly replicable pattern along the lines of:

Stet: See this new thing? This is awesome, this.
Grimly: Meh. Bollocks. Bag of balls. Looks fucking pish. Wouldn't use it if you paid me. Etc.

Weeks/days/minutes pass

Grimly: This is good, isn't it?
Stet: You're an anus.

The only time this didn't happen was with, er, ILX. And that's because it was Alext I was arguing with, not Stet.)

Error: No Error (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

hahahaha

struck through in my prime (HI DERE), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

i slept so good last night but didn't use sleep cycle. i actually don't need an alarm clock, because i wake up at the same time every day generally (combination of circadian rhythms and cat), but i like looking at the sleep graphs.

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

So this pad is basically going to break my iPhone, isn't it? Up until now I had this lovely OS and lots of apps all of which were specifically designed for my one piece of hardware. Now a) the OS is going to start incorporating features I'll never be able to use (=bloat) and b) all the apps are going to be updated to include higher resolution assets etc (=bloat) and bascially my little phone's going to gradually slow down and slug up until it's ruined.

JimD, Thursday, 28 January 2010 08:50 (sixteen years ago)

will I be able to use the iPad as a pillow together with the sleep cycle app?

saaberonixx (baaderonixx), Thursday, 28 January 2010 09:10 (sixteen years ago)

anybody had any experience with the brain wave app?

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Monday, 1 February 2010 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

what's the best iphone colour and is the 3GS worth it?

cozen, Monday, 1 February 2010 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

i've owned all three iterations so far, and the 3GS is really a lot snappier and responsive.

best iphone colour? that is subjective, my brother

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Monday, 1 February 2010 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

by which he means "black"

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Monday, 1 February 2010 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Monday, 1 February 2010 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

Is that what you do.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 February 2010 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

woops

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Monday, 1 February 2010 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

White iphone still has black front, ie can't make its mind up, ie is shit. black iphone knows self, is not shit.

JimD, Monday, 1 February 2010 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

see, this is what I'm looking for

logic

cozen, Monday, 1 February 2010 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

white iPhone is like Quentin Tarantino introducing hip-hop acts: tragic and uncomfortable to look at

PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:04 (sixteen years ago)
