stretch and rest!
could it be shoe-related?

tehresa, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

i think it's from my hiking boots that i wore on my walk to work in the snow. they rub this little area on my upper heel and i think it just got worse from there.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

sad though, because i love those boots and they're new!

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

while it hurts, i am a little bit proud at the same time.

Congrats on your injury! Get better soon though eh?

BTW Jeff, I agree you'd have no problems doing a marathon.

i thought the thaw had set in properly but i nearly killed myself slipping on the ice this morning.

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 14 January 2010 13:55 (sixteen years ago)

Still trying to get back into a rhythm with my miles. So far I've only run 19.7 miles in January. What is surprising to me is how slow I'm getting. I'm averaging 9:21 a mile, when at the end of November I was down to 8:51 overall. I could just blame the weather, but I won't.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

hey i have actually run more than jeff this month! (at a drastically slower speed)
use that for motivation? bc i suck!

actually if you want to get technical about it i am sort of down. (tehresa), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:01 (sixteen years ago)

ie, you don't wanna be like me, so move those feet, sir!

actually if you want to get technical about it i am sort of down. (tehresa), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:01 (sixteen years ago)

or take a break, you earned it!

actually if you want to get technical about it i am sort of down. (tehresa), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:01 (sixteen years ago)

As long as you're out there Jeff, don't worry too much about the times. They'll come back.

From the Dr. C camp the latest news is that I've managed to get my 5K down to 24.33, and I did 10K the other weekend in a rather sedate 54.45. I set out too slowly really. Someone told me that a good target is to run your age in minutes. (I guess that only applies over a certain age at which it's humanly possible to run it in that number of minutes.) But anyway, I'm shooting for 48 minutes, which I reckon will be VERY tough. Stamina is not a problem, but sustained speed most definitely is! But the bad news is that I twisted my ankle last wkend playing rugby and I don't think I'll be able to run for 7-10 days.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 09:40 (sixteen years ago)

Someone told me that a good target is to run your age in minutes.

That's quite a tough challenge IMO, but a good project for this year maybe?

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 10:15 (sixteen years ago)

Jeff - it's just a case of getting back into the habit and your fitness will come straight back. Force yourself out the door for a few days and you'll be fine after that.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 10:17 (sixteen years ago)

I just got one of these for a late Xmas present. I will be extremely visible.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

Not if you stay at home with your feet up, tut tut.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 13:45 (sixteen years ago)

True, true. I'll try tonight even though it is going to be 27 degrees F and snowing.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, you might have a valid excuse there.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:12 (sixteen years ago)

looking forward to getting back in the running saddle this week...only been for ONE run this year which is hideous (first the ice making running treacherous, then a chest infection, then a press trip to montréal...genuine excuses!). could even do it TODAY but seeing that i'm still in bed i'm just not sure that's gonna happen.

finally got round to buying a winter running top though, maybe i won't catch a cold every time i run in these temperatures now.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:12 (sixteen years ago)

had gone 4 days in a row last wk, abt 5 mi each time. that is not normal for me but i was feeling strong and recovering well although after the last day i felt p. shitty & wore down. took the wkend off and now im more than ready to go later today!

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:20 (sixteen years ago)

Someone told me that a good target is to run your age in minutes.

This would give me a good chance of winning the 10k! Doubt I could even run twice my age in minutes, although that's a goal that would probably be achievable in the next year. Cool.

I'm also looking forward to getting back into regular running, although fortunately with better weather than you, Jeff! I had too much hamstring pain the first week of January and then too crazy a schedule to get in more than one or two runs a week, but now I'm more flexible and looking forward to having mileage goals again in February.

Maria, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:38 (sixteen years ago)

Someone told me that a good target is to run your age in minutes.

World record is about 26.5 mins iirc, but if you get within ten minutes of that, you've done an amazing run.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

ok then, if i ran my age in minutes i would DEFINITELY win.

Maria, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

There is no way I could run a 10K in 30 minutes. Hell, my 8K time is around 40 minutes, it would be fantastic if I could run my age in that.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:46 (sixteen years ago)

Only two runners got under 30 mins in our local 10k and that was out of a field of 2,500.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:53 (sixteen years ago)

This is how it works: http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/agegradingcalculator/0,7977,s6-238-277-415-0-0-0-0,00.html

Put your times and age into the calculator and it calculates whether you're local, regional , national class etc. My 5K time is just under 60% (i.e just about local class).

If I could run 10K in 48 mins, that would be 63%. (Shit, I've got some way to go!)

Jeff your 8K time of 40 mins puts you at around 59% i.e the same level as my 5K.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 14:58 (sixteen years ago)

My 5K target is 22mins, which I definitely think I can do in the next couple of months. That would be around 66%.

Dr.C, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:00 (sixteen years ago)

Oh man, I am nowhere near even approaching "local" class, ever! I am pretty close to the age of people who compete in college athletics though.

Maria, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

Am doing a ridiculous race this weekend - Southern Counties cross-country champs as part of a team. Going to be so out of my depth. It's four laps of a 2.5 mile course, think there's every chance I'll get lapped (only once I hope, but who knows?). Have heard horror stories of people losing their shoes *forever* in the mud. Going in the tenth race of the day and it'll be pretty churned up by then so I'm expecting the worst.

I do have a cold on its way though, wouldn't it be such a shame if I had to give it a miss?

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

Whoa - that sounds fun, Nick! Don't forget to report back on how it went (if you escape the mud)

Dr.C, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

That's a cool tool. I also like the McMillan calculator. Just put in one time for a specific distance and it will gauge what your equivalent performance will be at other distances. Lots of other good info as well.

So if my best 5K time is 22:53, then I should be able to run a marathon in 3:43:00. Assuming proper training leading up to it.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

i was running in the park last week and this girl who was apparently training for the boston marathon had her previous 2 marathon times on a shirt and they were like 3:28 and 3:30 and i was like, lady, piss off as she wooshed past me.

actually if you want to get technical about it i am sort of down. (tehresa), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

OK, I was all set to run, but then on my walk home from the train station I decided not to. It wasn't so much the cold and the snow, but the stupid wind, which makes it feel like 4 degrees F as opposed to the 19 F it actually is. I really hate winter.

Jeff, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 00:20 (sixteen years ago)

Has anyone had knee pain then successfully got over it? What did you do?

Vasco da Gama, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

I used to have really bad knee pains when I started, but they went when I got better (for me) shoes. Still get odd pains every now and again if I overdo it. Nothing very serious, I just take a couple of ibuprofen and rest for a couple of days.

In general I'd say get decent shoes that work for you, build up your distance slowly, and run on softer surfaces if possible.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

i never get knee pain and i'm so glad my shins have gotten mostly better. occasional tenderness but really NOTHING compared to a few months ago, and no ibuprofen needed. i have some arch pain today, which i think is a result of wearing heels for the first time in ages yesterday, but it was kind of putting a damper on my running this afternoon :(

tehresa, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:35 (sixteen years ago)

I've had very little pain, knee or otherwise since I got custom insoles from my podatrist.

Jeff, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

i tried putting my superfeet (the pink ones) in my running shoes last week to see if i would feel like a running champ but i ended up having a terrible run with a lot of shin pain (like, back to october kind of pain, it was scary) so i just went back to the insoles that came in the shoes.

tehresa, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:40 (sixteen years ago)

I tried superfeet, but didn't like them. The custom ones are great, they take a cast of your foot and a couple of weeks later you have an insole that fits you foot perfectly.

Jeff, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

that sounds nice!
the superfeet are fine for hiking, but definitely a dnw for running, i guess :(

tehresa, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

I'm actually running 30m+ in a week, and I'm never 'in pain' - it's just that if I run 6m+ on concurrent days I develop a slight cracking noise in my knees, and then I know I need to take time off to avoid progression to crunching noises, then proper pain. So my main problem is that this dictates my rest days, and I'm very wary of running half marathon type distances, or pushing my speed ever.

I really enjoyed the first phase of getting into running, the psychological challenge, but now the limiting factor is these tedious worries about my knees and I rarely ever get to run fast or long enough to really get tired.

Maybe I need to restrict my milage and slowly build back up.

Vasco da Gama, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:28 (sixteen years ago)

You're doing pretty well if you're running 30 mile weeks IMO! To be honest, my legs don't feel all that great when I'm doing that sort of mileage either. If endurance is your goal, you could try doing longer runs, but build more rest into your schedule to help you recover. I'd say that one ten mile run would be doing more for your basic endurance than two six mile runs, so don't worry too much about taking an extra day off.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Friday, 29 January 2010 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't ran in a week. I hate running in single digit and windy weather. I can do it if it is sunny outside, but my only times I can run are when it is dark; early in the morning or after work.

I'm signing up for a rock climbing class in February, at least that will give me some sort of physical activity during the month. And work on my pitiful upper body strength.

Jeff, Friday, 29 January 2010 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

Always wanted to give climbing a go. Bet my upper body strength is worse than your's though.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Friday, 29 January 2010 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

I've never tried it, will be my first time. Most importantly, it will be indoors and warm!

Jeff, Friday, 29 January 2010 23:41 (sixteen years ago)

oooh where are you going? d and i have been looking for a place to do indoor rock climbing.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Saturday, 30 January 2010 01:14 (sixteen years ago)

Lakeview Athletic Club, right down the street from me. There was a deal on youswoop.com yesterday to get 6 hours of climbing lessons for $60. Normally $125, so I got it.

Jeff, Saturday, 30 January 2010 01:21 (sixteen years ago)

iiiiiinteresting

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Saturday, 30 January 2010 01:25 (sixteen years ago)

Actually, there is five left of the deal, you could go to the evanston location.

Jeff, Saturday, 30 January 2010 01:26 (sixteen years ago)

thanks! we're totally gonna do it.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Saturday, 30 January 2010 01:34 (sixteen years ago)

I still have my rei free pinnacle climb but I'm scared to do it bc I don't think I will live up to my 15-year old self's performance.
