It's a little before 3:00 here, I can start drinking rum so you don't look so bad.
― Miss Bannister (╓abies), Sunday, 10 January 2010 20:52 (sixteen years ago)
if i had a plate of eggs in front of me, it would be perfectly acceptable to drink a bloody mary or some bullshit so why can't i just start sippin whiskey. i just wanna taste the weller tbh, and hope i like it.
― Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 20:53 (sixteen years ago)
initial impressions of the old weller antique 107 are mixed and not entirely favorable. extremely sweet up front with a vague medicinal taste to the otherwise nice & slow finish. maybe it'll grow on me.
― Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:01 (sixteen years ago)
also you can really smell the booze in this thing.
i had the weller 90 recently and was def not crazy about it
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:02 (sixteen years ago)
received a bottle of http://www.sixthseal.com/archive/November2005/shine_on_georgia_moon_corn_whiskey.jpg for Christmas.
will not be drinking
― smashing aspirant (milo z), Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:08 (sixteen years ago)
haha i see that in the store and it scares me
― tehresa, Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:11 (sixteen years ago)
old weller antique fares a bit better over ice, but basically tastes like a thicker & maybe even sweeter makers to me.
― Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:19 (sixteen years ago)
ew
― tehresa, Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:21 (sixteen years ago)
yeah. oh well. at least i got that bottle of rittenhouse <3 my roommates can have at the weller tbh.
― Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:23 (sixteen years ago)
i bet this would be good with ginger ale tho.
That corn whiskey should have a whole mess of cherries sunk in it. And then left in the sun for a few months. Foreals. Amazing.
I got a bottle of Jameson 12 y.o. last night. Fuck, that is some deadly smooth shit. My buddy and I killed half a bottle without even blinking.

Got the Weller's special reserve. Like it, but it feels suuuuuper-sweet - maybe just because the last bourbon I had was the Bulleit?
― ljubljana, Friday, 12 March 2010 01:43 (sixteen years ago)
Suntory Yamazaki 12 yr is nummers

maker's mark is crap isn't it
― am0n, Friday, 12 March 2010 03:52 (sixteen years ago)
yes
― call all destroyer, Friday, 12 March 2010 03:53 (sixteen years ago)
if you need a wheated bourbon buy weller's and save yrself like 15 bucks
― call all destroyer, Friday, 12 March 2010 03:54 (sixteen years ago)
I haven't had any Weller in ages at this point, but it's definitely on the sweet end of the bourbon spectrum. That's generally the way with wheated bourbons. What I like about the Special Reserve compared to Makers Mark is that the Wellers tastes like a complete bourbon to me, ie it actually has a finish, unlike Makers Mark. And I do like Makers well enough. It's a perfectly fine bourbon to sip neat, but I think its strength, in terms of mass appeal, is that its flavor is pretty subdued. I prefer a bolder bourbon, whether that's sweeter, hotter, or spicier. But its by no means a bad bourbon, imo.
Recently resampled Bulleit, and didn't think it was as bad as I used to, now think its perfectly adequate, but that's still not a very interesting drink either, imo.
Also I'm pretty disappointed in Rittenhouse Rye. Tastes more like a rye bourbon to me than a rye whisky. I don't know. I feel like I've tasted bourbons with stronger rye flavor than that. I mean if I'm drinking rye, I really want that spicy rye flavor to be pretty strong, and in the Rittenhouse it just doesn't seem to be. I guess if I think of it as a bourbon though, it's pretty good. But again if I'm drinking rye, I don't want to drink something that doesn't, in my opinion, taste like rye.
― Mister Jim, Friday, 12 March 2010 04:04 (sixteen years ago)
interesting--rittenhouse is like my white whale at this point (nb i mostly want it for cocktails, some of which would really benefot from a 100 proof rye). i talked to the owner of a pretty big liquor store with a great whiskey selection about it--apparently in the last bottling a grand total of two cases were allotted to my state. i guess i need to travel....somewhere.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 12 March 2010 04:11 (sixteen years ago)
makers is a fine dtd whiskey but there's really no point in spending 35-45$ for a bottle of makers over any boutique label
― Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 12 March 2010 04:14 (sixteen years ago)
The rittenhouse I had is at 80 proof. A litle research tells me they have a bottled in bond version at 100 proof, so maybe that's the one everyone likes so much.
― Mister Jim, Friday, 12 March 2010 04:20 (sixteen years ago)
ahhh yes i'm looking for the bottled in bond
― call all destroyer, Friday, 12 March 2010 04:26 (sixteen years ago)
I've been looking for that locally forever. Going to have to break down and order online, I guess.
― FIST FIGHT! FIST FIGHT! FIST FIGHT IN THE PARKING LOT! (milo z), Friday, 12 March 2010 04:30 (sixteen years ago)
BOTTLED IN BOND IS THE BEST THING FOR ME TO HAVE LEARNED TODAY AND IT IS ONLY 12:04 AM!
― Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 12 March 2010 05:04 (sixteen years ago)
SERIOUSLY TELL ME MORE AND GIVE ME A LIST TO BUY!
― Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 12 March 2010 05:10 (sixteen years ago)
Lol. Speaking of bottled in bond, Old Grandad BIB is probably one of my top 5 whiskies right now. Kinda Peppery with an amazing candy apple body. And at about $20 a bottle is a pretty amazing deal. Don't be put off by the garish orange label.
― Mister Jim, Friday, 12 March 2010 05:12 (sixteen years ago)
Though honestly I don't think many distilleries use the bib designation too often anymore.
― Mister Jim, Friday, 12 March 2010 05:15 (sixteen years ago)
I have a bottle (half bottle lol) of noah's mill! I'm drinking it now! It's 114.proof but I don't know if it has the DISTINCION *hic*
― Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 12 March 2010 05:20 (sixteen years ago)
100 proof rittenhouse is definitely the one that everyone likes
― just sayin, Friday, 12 March 2010 08:44 (sixteen years ago)
In the last few weeks I've tried and very much liked Caol Ila, Highland Park (very smoky), Jura (10 year - very smooth) & a Bowmore (a real strong mixture of flavours that I couldn't necessarily articulate yet).
Trying to get through my cheap bottle of Famous Grouse that I bought at New Years so that I can actually replace it with something decent.
― krakow, Friday, 12 March 2010 09:05 (sixteen years ago)
bowmore is great. i also need to get a new malt soon. got some anCnoc left, which i'm really enjoying, and a laphroaig 10 that i'm having a hard time getting through tbh, kinda worn out on that one at the moment
― sonderangerbot, Friday, 12 March 2010 10:05 (sixteen years ago)
Recommend Scapa. I think it's the most delicate single malt I've had.
― ljubljana, Friday, 12 March 2010 12:53 (sixteen years ago)
caol ila is amazing. got a bottle of the 12yr for xmas. super smokey, but super smooth.
friend had a scotch tasting party at his office. everyone was supposed to bring a bottle that was >$30. we tried to get at least one from each area (lowland, speyside, highland, campbeltown, and islay). in the end we all graded them out of 5. here's the breakdown:
Caol Ila 4.56Glen Scotia 4.42Glen Keith 4.37Aberlour 4.13Glenfiddich 4Ardmore 3.97Singleton 3.96Macallan 3.93Glen Moray 3.5
i had been searching for the ardmore traditional cask because of an article i'd read on it, but when i finally was able to taste it, i didn't like it. i brought the singleton.
i also really LOVED the glen keith
― jaxon, Friday, 12 March 2010 20:33 (sixteen years ago)
recently picked up Basil Hayden bourbon. i think it's ok. i think i wanted something a lil sweeter.
and the wife got a bottle of Hibiki japanese whiskey. pretty good.

Really? I love the stuff. I love Bulleit too.
― Bill Magill, Friday, 12 March 2010 20:38 (sixteen years ago)
basil hayden is nice enough but super-mild imo. not sure if it's worth it for the price. bulleit i thought was pretty good.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 12 March 2010 20:44 (sixteen years ago)
I only know three of those. I love malts so I'll definitely check out the top 3. Got a slew of whisky at my PhD party so I'm still good though :)Personal favourites are Old Puteney, Dalwhinnie, Lagavullin (depending on mood/occasion). For hardcore peat-lovers I recommend trying some Ardberg. A real WTF when you first taste it but persistence pays off imo.All the american suggestions on this thread make me want to check out some bourbons - any of you guys got a tip for a peaty whisky lover?
― willem, Friday, 12 March 2010 20:48 (sixteen years ago)
Have enjoyed a few Booker's Manhattans this week. The higher proof bourbon makes all the difference in the world. If a bar doesn't have the 125 - 133 proof Booker's (bottled straight from the barrel, so it varies in proof), Turkey will do the trick at a mere 101 proof.
I had a feeling this thread would rear its caramel colored, barrel aged head this afternoon.

A friend brought me some Longmorn as a housewarming present. I rate it very drinkable.
― mh, Friday, 12 March 2010 21:09 (sixteen years ago)
that grading upthread is also sorta off because not everyone tried every type
― jaxon, Friday, 12 March 2010 21:36 (sixteen years ago)
Sunday night was a wee try of Laphroaig. I can't really articulate what it tasted like, very complex and potent; I liked it very much though.
― krakow, Monday, 15 March 2010 09:03 (sixteen years ago)
I wondered if that might be a resin-y taste?
― krakow, Monday, 15 March 2010 09:05 (sixteen years ago)
peaty
― mh, Monday, 15 March 2010 18:49 (sixteen years ago)
I can definitely taste the differences in flavours, but don't know which terms best apply all the time.
― krakow, Monday, 15 March 2010 21:02 (sixteen years ago)
Oh my God I am in love with Laphroaig 10! Just picked up a bottle of that plus Pappy Van Winkle 15 plus a bottle of Old Grand Dad BIB, and I am so happy right now. I'm going to have to start exploring the world of single malts. But don't know where to begin. Need to check out Lagavulin, I guess. Laphroaig has sold me on the Islays.
Also tried Rittenhouse Rye BIB since the last thread revive, and it is definitely better than the RR 80 proof. Definitely a pretty good whiskey, but I'm not sure it outclasses the wild turkey rye for me, when I'm in the mood for a rye whiskey. And for that matter, I think the Old Grand Dad BIB, like Bulleit, tastes like a smoother more delicious Wild Turkey Rye.
Top 5 favorite whiskies at the moment:
1) Old Rip Van Winkle 10/902) Pappy Van Winkle 153) Laphroiag 104) Bakers5) Old Grand Dad BIB
