For Christmas, my girlfriend got me a bottle of William LaRue Weller, barrel proof at 125.3, part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. I finally got around to opening it the other day and this shit is really really great. Lots of heat, yet smooth, sweet and a bit woody. Trying to make it last a while by doing no more than 1 pour of it in any given session.

Otherwise I've been on a bit of a rye kick lately, going with Wild Turkey Rye and Rittenhouse, which are both good values. In terms of Bourbon, turns out the Old Grand Dad BIB is a really good value rye bourbon. Also recently tried some Eagle Rare single barrel, 10 year 90 proof which I wasn't blown away by, but will definitely need to taste again.

my friend went to Japan over christmas and brought me back a small bottle of 10 year single malt - nikko I think it's called? haven't tried it because, as usual, it is wrapped in exquisite japanese packaging and I don't want to ruin it

I picked up some Four Roses and it's pretty good. very...smokey? doesn't go well with ice but very good neat

so when was the last time you had a dickel in your mouth?

tehresa, Saturday, 9 January 2010 06:27 (sixteen years ago)

The '99 Evan Williams Single Barrel is a fav for sure and good value at about $30. And the regular stuff is pretty good too and at half the price of Beam white label, so yeah... amazing deal there.

Didn't detect smoke on the 4 roses I had, maybe some char on the single barrel, but I haven't tried all of their expressions. Anyway, yeah, you want their 80 proof version neat for sure. Most whiskies at that proof won't stand up to ice cubes.

Old Rip Van Winkle 10/90 is like my favorite pour right now.

Mister Jim, Saturday, 9 January 2010 06:58 (sixteen years ago)

oy vey, tza. i think it's 19.99 down here at tj's. my father-in-law was digging it when he stayed here for xmas

tehresa, Saturday, 9 January 2010 10:02 (sixteen years ago)

my sc friend's dad owns a liquor store and she sold me some at cost which ended up being like 21.95 but there was really no good way to try to stock up and bring it back w/ me.

tehresa, Saturday, 9 January 2010 10:03 (sixteen years ago)

had Rittenhouse last night at the bbq joint. Great value for sure. I think the next bottle I buy will be Booker's, unless something else at the shop jumps out at me.

All the friggin Irish coffee I had after midnight last night was probably a bad idea.

mh, Sunday, 10 January 2010 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

i cannot find rittenhouse around here for the life of me; it's annoying

call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 January 2010 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

you know what, after perusing their online catalog, i think i'm gonna take a long-ish walk this afternoon to try a new liquor store as apparently i can get both rittenhouse & weller 12 yr there for under $20 apiece.

Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

ended up getting the weller Antique cuz it was just two dollars more than the 12 year. and the rittenhouse, which was $15. amazing deal.

Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

wow what store?
liquor here is $$$$ but i guess that's good cause it makes me drink less.

It's a little before 3:00 here, I can start drinking rum so you don't look so bad.

Miss Bannister (â•“abies), Sunday, 10 January 2010 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

if i had a plate of eggs in front of me, it would be perfectly acceptable to drink a bloody mary or some bullshit so why can't i just start sippin whiskey. i just wanna taste the weller tbh, and hope i like it.

Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

initial impressions of the old weller antique 107 are mixed and not entirely favorable. extremely sweet up front with a vague medicinal taste to the otherwise nice & slow finish. maybe it'll grow on me.

Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

also you can really smell the booze in this thing.

Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

i had the weller 90 recently and was def not crazy about it

call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

smashing aspirant (milo z), Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

haha i see that in the store and it scares me

tehresa, Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

old weller antique fares a bit better over ice, but basically tastes like a thicker & maybe even sweeter makers to me.

Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:19 (sixteen years ago)

ew

tehresa, Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

yeah. oh well. at least i got that bottle of rittenhouse <3 my roommates can have at the weller tbh.

Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

i bet this would be good with ginger ale tho.

Joint Custody (ian), Sunday, 10 January 2010 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

That corn whiskey should have a whole mess of cherries sunk in it. And then left in the sun for a few months. Foreals. Amazing.

I got a bottle of Jameson 12 y.o. last night. Fuck, that is some deadly smooth shit. My buddy and I killed half a bottle without even blinking.

Clerk all KNOWIN (B.L.A.M.), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

two months pass...

Got the Weller's special reserve. Like it, but it feels suuuuuper-sweet - maybe just because the last bourbon I had was the Bulleit?

Suntory Yamazaki 12 yr is nummers

maker's mark is crap isn't it

am0n, Friday, 12 March 2010 03:52 (sixteen years ago)

yes

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 March 2010 03:53 (sixteen years ago)

if you need a wheated bourbon buy weller's and save yrself like 15 bucks

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 March 2010 03:54 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't had any Weller in ages at this point, but it's definitely on the sweet end of the bourbon spectrum. That's generally the way with wheated bourbons. What I like about the Special Reserve compared to Makers Mark is that the Wellers tastes like a complete bourbon to me, ie it actually has a finish, unlike Makers Mark. And I do like Makers well enough. It's a perfectly fine bourbon to sip neat, but I think its strength, in terms of mass appeal, is that its flavor is pretty subdued. I prefer a bolder bourbon, whether that's sweeter, hotter, or spicier. But its by no means a bad bourbon, imo.

Recently resampled Bulleit, and didn't think it was as bad as I used to, now think its perfectly adequate, but that's still not a very interesting drink either, imo.

Also I'm pretty disappointed in Rittenhouse Rye. Tastes more like a rye bourbon to me than a rye whisky. I don't know. I feel like I've tasted bourbons with stronger rye flavor than that. I mean if I'm drinking rye, I really want that spicy rye flavor to be pretty strong, and in the Rittenhouse it just doesn't seem to be. I guess if I think of it as a bourbon though, it's pretty good. But again if I'm drinking rye, I don't want to drink something that doesn't, in my opinion, taste like rye.

Mister Jim, Friday, 12 March 2010 04:04 (sixteen years ago)

interesting--rittenhouse is like my white whale at this point (nb i mostly want it for cocktails, some of which would really benefot from a 100 proof rye). i talked to the owner of a pretty big liquor store with a great whiskey selection about it--apparently in the last bottling a grand total of two cases were allotted to my state. i guess i need to travel....somewhere.

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 March 2010 04:11 (sixteen years ago)

makers is a fine dtd whiskey but there's really no point in spending 35-45$ for a bottle of makers over any boutique label

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 12 March 2010 04:14 (sixteen years ago)

The rittenhouse I had is at 80 proof. A litle research tells me they have a bottled in bond version at 100 proof, so maybe that's the one everyone likes so much.

Mister Jim, Friday, 12 March 2010 04:20 (sixteen years ago)

ahhh yes i'm looking for the bottled in bond

call all destroyer, Friday, 12 March 2010 04:26 (sixteen years ago)

I've been looking for that locally forever. Going to have to break down and order online, I guess.
