australia isn't any more racist than any other western country ime. "blackfella" and "whitefella" are words used mostly by indingenous australians and aren't necessarily racist at all.

Erm. No. Koori people call *themselves* "blackfullas", its pidgin, at least do us the courtesy of understanding some of Australia's culture the way you expect us to of yours.

There are plenty of racist terms and racism against the indigenous in this country but blackfella ain't one of them, nor is it really even a "taken back" insult. Words like "boong" and "abo" on the other hand... sigh.

An Australian publisher has had to pulp and reprint a cook-book after one recipe listed "salt and freshly ground black people" instead of black pepper.

Penguin Group Australia had to reprint 7,000 copies of Pasta Bible last week, the Sydney Morning Herald has reported.

The reprint cost A$20,000 ($18,000; £12,000), but stock in bookshops will not be recalled as it is "extremely hard" to do so, Penguin said.

The recipe was for spelt tagliatelle with sardines and prosciutto.

"We're mortified that this has become an issue of any kind, and why anyone would be offended, we don't know," head of publishing Bob Sessions is quoted as saying by the Sydney newspaper.

Penguin said almost every one of the more than 150 recipes in the book listed salt and freshly ground black pepper, but a misprint occurred on just one page.

"When it comes to the proofreader, of course they should have picked it up, but proofreading a cook-book is an extremely difficult task. I find that quite forgivable," Mr Sessions said.

If anyone complains about the "silly mistake", they will be given the new version, Penguin said.

At least this mistake won't make people's crock pots explode.

Cookbooks really ARE redonkulously hard to copy edit because of all the abbreviations and numbers, and the copy editor has no way of knowing which are right or wrong. (The mistake itt is an obvious one, but it's not surprising that something was overlooked.) Actually it's probably a success for a cookbook if they didn't make any mistakes that make the recipes turn out wrong (apart from the ridiculous) because that also makes the AUTHOR look bad (this way only the publisher does).

Shorter publishing seasons and a more market-driven book idea also make every project a rush, means there's less time for editing and proofing of all kinds. Pretty much sucks!

Abbs: Yes! Although I think the general use of errata has declined since publishers tend to only print the copies they think they can sell in a short time -- the production cycle has gotten away from extended warehousing and toward a more on-demand market. So books are off the shelves faster and the pub can reprint the book w corrections already made.
