why do you need to sync mail accounts?

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 31 December 2009 10:46 (sixteen years ago)

that syncs the messages in the account as linked through itunes. you just need to sync the mail account preferences. i know you use gmail so it's either IMAP or gmail activesync whatever...

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 31 December 2009 10:47 (sixteen years ago)

why can't you listen to your itunes library through an iphone when you're on the same wifi network, is what I want to know

or have your iphone push music out to airtunes and the big speakers, is what I wanna know

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 31 December 2009 12:39 (sixteen years ago)

if you are near an airtunes setup, your computer should be there too, no?

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 31 December 2009 12:57 (sixteen years ago)

yes cutty i know--i just thought itd be easier to sync the settings than to re-enter them manually u know

max, Thursday, 31 December 2009 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

right, but what you are trying to do in itunes is sync the entirety of your mail accounts (all your messages)

don't do that

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 31 December 2009 13:45 (sixteen years ago)

what you are trying to do, is hold me back

max, Thursday, 31 December 2009 14:31 (sixteen years ago)

i'm trying to make u stronger

bum-sniff deviant (cutty), Thursday, 31 December 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

Is there any way to auto reload apps after a restore? I've just lost them all - and it's the second time this has happened. Yes I took a backup. Yes I had 'sync applications' checked.

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Saturday, 2 January 2010 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

If they're still in iTunes, you go to the Applications tab and tick all the individual boxes for the apps you want, then sync. It unticks them if you delete them from the phone at any point

stet, Saturday, 2 January 2010 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

They've all gone from itunes ;_; but i'm not sure they were ever there properly, they showed up in the fake iphone screens on the right, but not in the list on the left. do they need to be in the list? how do i get them there?

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Saturday, 2 January 2010 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

Are you buying them from the phone? You need to right-click on the phone and choose "transfer purchased items" to put them in your library. This should happen automatically if you've got all-auto syncing on, but sometimes doesn't. If you buy the apps via iTunes they're automatically copied to the library, or should be, so something wrong there.

stet, Saturday, 2 January 2010 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

from the phone yeah, i guess the auto transfer just ain't working. arseholes. thx!

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Saturday, 2 January 2010 18:15 (sixteen years ago)

'transfer purchases' isn't even working, man this is some bullshit.

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Saturday, 2 January 2010 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

Oh this really is too fucking much. So i reloaded half my apps, still no joy getting them into itunes. Then I notice some of them aren't working, so I delete those. Still no transfer. I do a hard reset, and bingo, the rest of my apps (except the inbuilt ones) stop working too. Including Spotify, which had just spent two hours playlist syncing, for the third time.

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Sunday, 3 January 2010 13:58 (sixteen years ago)

This cld be an auth problem. Sign out from the store on both the phone and PC; then sign in on PC and sync

stet, Sunday, 3 January 2010 14:12 (sixteen years ago)

i think zing touch broke my iphone :(

sometimes that happens to me and I just turn it off/on in the network settings?

no

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Sunday, 3 January 2010 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

Don't know much about this stuff, Cutty, but I think 1611 is in some way related to a buggered battery ... maybe try charging it up from the mains first, then connecting it to your computer? Absolutely no guarantee this will work, though :/

Error: No Error (grimly fiendish), Sunday, 3 January 2010 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

i just restored network settings and it's cool

yeah, my pc wasn't authorised. thanks itunes for not giving me any kind of a clue to the problem! still i, r fool for not realising you could buy apps through itunes in the first place.

I am trying out 'Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock' which claims to track your sleeping cycles and wake you up at the most grog-free time.

Player is killed, but they are resurrected, and the 45 Revolver glow gold (dyao), Friday, 8 January 2010 06:12 (sixteen years ago)

just got that one, but the whole sleeping-with-my-iphone-under-pillow is making me nervous

spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Friday, 8 January 2010 08:43 (sixteen years ago)

I need that! I think I have things completely topsy turvy at the moment. Get woken by my upstairs neighbour dropping stuff on the floor at 6 am, feel wide awake. Take an hour to get back to sleep. Alarm goes off at 8 and I spend another hour trying to wake up again.

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Friday, 8 January 2010 10:03 (sixteen years ago)

It monitors your movement using the accelerometer! Colour me sceptical, but for 59p it's worth a try.

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Friday, 8 January 2010 10:07 (sixteen years ago)

my iphone updated its carrier settings and now I have tethering! (NB I am not in the US) maybe I'll update my plan to get unlimited data.

have been addicted to using sleep cycle - it's awesome to wake up and then look at the graph showing how you slept the previous night

dyao, Monday, 18 January 2010 03:26 (sixteen years ago)

i think i will have to try this "sleep cycle" business

everybody's into weirdness right now (gbx), Monday, 18 January 2010 03:50 (sixteen years ago)

It really works! Only thing is, it can wake me up 30 minutes early, and then I think it's way too early to get up, so just go back to sleep

stet, Monday, 18 January 2010 03:58 (sixteen years ago)

That's cool, but I rarely sleep in the same place in one night. I move around all night, couch, bed, kitchen table, where ever.

Jeff, Monday, 18 January 2010 04:02 (sixteen years ago)

I still don't get what yr supposed to do with yr phone? Hide under the pillow? Doesn't it fall off?

spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Monday, 18 January 2010 09:17 (sixteen years ago)

put it next to the pillow - you can probably duct tape it or something if your bed doesn't border the wall

cogito, ergo some dude (dyao), Monday, 18 January 2010 09:21 (sixteen years ago)

The alarm on mine always goes off right at the very end of the 30 min window, and sometimes the sleep graph looks as though I've been in a coma for half the night. Perhaps I need to reposition or recalibrate it. Otoh I have been waking up much better. Shame it doesn't make actually getting out of bed any easier.

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Monday, 18 January 2010 10:14 (sixteen years ago)

I set mine to short circuit and shock the bed

cogito, ergo some dude (dyao), Monday, 18 January 2010 10:58 (sixteen years ago)

Not wanting to be a twat about this, 'cos obviously it's only a bit of fun ... but, er, how the FUCK can it make any claim to say what kind of sleep state you're in based on, umm, the accelerometer? Sure, if it came with an EEG net or something ... :)

Also, I don't think I'm entirely comfortable with the idea of sleeping with my phone, for all sorts of reasons. Mostly practical ones.

Error: No Error (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

I think it operates on the principle that if you're moving a lot you're in a more shallow sleep than if you're staying still

mage pit laceration (gbx), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

I presume yr tossing (fnarr) and turning frequency must be pretty well correlated to sleep state. Sure there's a bit of guesswork thrown in as well but I think it does a decent enough job, If I wake up in the middle of the night sure enough there's an 'awake' peak on the graph the next day. (xp)

CATBEAST 7777 (ledge), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, the awake peaks def correspond to trips to the bathroom or w/e.

honestly even if the graph is junky science, the main feature works: by tripping the alarm when you're stirring around before the cut-off time, and doing so gently, i'm way more inclined to get out of bed instead of jamming the snooze bar (and i am a notorious 5x snoozer). like normally if i'm awake ahead of the alarm i'll look over at the clock, see that there's ten minutes to go, and will say 'sweet maybe i can squeeze out another ten minutes of sleep.' sometimes this actually works, and i'm pretty deeply asleep when the alarm (a screecher) goes off, and it's horrible, and i hit snooze. repeat for like 40 minutes.

i'm now beginning to trust this thing and just accept that it is right, and that I AM awake, and that the extra however minutes i would've gotten would have only made my morning worse

mage pit laceration (gbx), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

but, er, how the FUCK can it make any claim to say what kind of sleep state you're in based on, umm, the accelerometer?

There's fairly robust science behind this: your brain state correlates pretty nicely with how much you move in bed. I've been on a couple of sleep studies where you have to wear a wrist-watch-type device to monitor how much you move, so they can plot your sleep states.

like normally if i'm awake ahead of the alarm
woah, the idea.

stet, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

i know right

still that's kinda the fundamental premise tho isn't it, that if you've allotted yourself enough time to sleep (like not two hours) then chances are that you'll be awake ~enough~ to be stirred. it just so happens that some days i'm awake enough to squint blearily at the alarm clock and mutter a swear word

mage pit laceration (gbx), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

There's fairly robust science behind this: your brain state correlates pretty nicely with how much you move in bed

With the greatest respect: "robust"? Away and shite. You want to know what's happening in THE BRANE when you're sleeping, you need to be taking a measure of, er, brain activity! Anything else is lacking in validity, to put it mildly. I'm not saying there's no link at all, obviously, but it seems a little, umm, less than entirely scientific.

THAT SAID: I'm aware this is an app costing 59p, so I'm probably being a little bit of a twat about it :)

Stet: surely the wristwatch-type device you wore would be measuring more than just movement: eg pulse rate or something? Also, out of interest: did they ever take any EEG readings?

i'm now beginning to trust this thing and just accept that it is right, and that I AM awake, and that the extra however minutes i would've gotten would have only made my morning worse

See, I think what this maybe works on is a kind of self-fulfilling-prophecy idea: "Ooh, if this thing says I'm awake, I'm awake! Best get up, then." Which is fine if you're willing to buy into the idea, but not if (like Stet) you're just going to say, fuck it, iPhone, it's early and dark and cold and I'm going back to sleep.

I wake up every morning round about 6ish and think: I really should get up now. I feel wide awake. But because it's 6am and I very rarely have to get up that early, I do exactly what Stet describes, go back to sleep ... and then have to haul myself up a couple of hours later, invariably running late.

Ultimately, I guess what I'm saying is: I don't need an app to tell me I should just get out of my fucking scratcher, *and* I bet that if I did have an app it'd make no sodding difference whatsoever :)

Error: No Error (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

and that the extra however minutes i would've gotten would have only made my morning worse

This is a phrase I'm going to try to repeat to myself at 6am :)

Error: No Error (grimly fiendish), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

luckily grimly no one is forcing you to use this app!

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 20 January 2010 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

You want to know what's happening in THE BRANE

what does the fucking brane have to do with it

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 16:01 (sixteen years ago)

actually, grimly, i think the science is sound! told my friend about it and he's mega med school nerd (he has kept SLEEP LOGS for the last year or so...he called me on sunday to ask if i knew i any excel secrets, as he was compiling it all in a spreadsheet) and was like oh yeah i've been meaning to buy a wrist accelerometer

anyway: http://bit.ly/51AhDR
