yikes be careful everyone!

a couple days ago i ran 9 miles as my last "long run" of 2009, then jan. 1 i want to do 10 miles as my first run of 2010. gimmicky? yes. but it's totally inspiring me!

Maria, Saturday, 26 December 2009 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

i did a short run in the neighborhood behind my parents' because they have partial sidewalks. but in some places the sidewalk slants at like 30ยบ angle! it was a mess.

tehresa, Saturday, 26 December 2009 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

I thought my dad (frequent 10k and occasional marathon runner) was going to take me to the pain cave yesterday but I felt fine going at his pace for longer than I've run before (I usu. do 3 miles quickly as opposed to his 5 slowly) but I think december has killed my general fitness levels (cold/manflu for first 10, cold snap for the next 10) => fuuuuuuuck my legs are aching today

cozwn, Sunday, 27 December 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

I've gotten a cold now too. I'm just going to write off December and start anew in January.

Jeff, Sunday, 27 December 2009 21:41 (sixteen years ago)

i think you did plenty well for the whole year so don't feel bad!

tehresa, Sunday, 27 December 2009 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

Tehresa OTM. Get well soon Jeff!

Coz, your dad sounds just like mine. Love going running with him, good to have that time to talk.

Can't believe you guys are still going out so much, I've not tried since the ice appeared. I felt bad, but your stoicism acting like it's no thing is totally alien to my lazy cold meat and chocolate seasonal mentality.

ogmor, Monday, 28 December 2009 12:17 (sixteen years ago)

man, what he said times three

lazy cold meat and chocolate seasonal mentality (forksclovetofu), Monday, 28 December 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

i'm at the gym for reals. no way in hell i'm going to run on ice/snow. my shoes would be wet within minutes. i don't mind the cold so much as the frozen water.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 28 December 2009 14:32 (sixteen years ago)

first run in 3 weeks (illness, then too much work, then xmas) - it was a real struggle but goddamn it felt good. a bit of trepidation as i'm pretty sure that running in these arctic temperatures is what got me ill in the first place, it had better not come back again.

lex pretend, Monday, 28 December 2009 14:34 (sixteen years ago)

First run of the 10s and I took it slow w/my only aim being to stay moving and on my feet for an hour. Had a ball in the snow in the end & did way over six miles which is great for me especially post-Christmas. Rediscovered that forgettable equation: Slow = steady breathing = relaxed = daydreaming/enjoying the scenery = good times = fast. Signed up to a half marathon at the end of March, gotta get cracking.

ogmor, Monday, 4 January 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

my 1st ever 10+ mile run a couple days ago - it was pretty rad except for the huge mountain i had to run over - it was like 3+ miles of alternating v steep and somewhat steep - gwana choose a new route next time

it was all made worth it tho by the fact that when i was flagging around mile 8 i passed A MOTHERFUCKING ONE HORSE OPEN SLEIGH JUST DRIVING DOWN THE SNOWY ROAD and immediately got so happy and a new surge of energy

ice cr?m, Monday, 4 January 2010 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

Congratulations on the 10!

I still haven't run this new year. I'm in CA for work though and it is in the 60s here!!!! Now if I can just get out of the office.

Jeff, Monday, 4 January 2010 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

Going for a run on black ice takes a bit of confidence, but somehow it's easier than walking on it. Cambers and corners feel dangerous though.

Vasco da Gama, Monday, 4 January 2010 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

it always feels dangerous to me! i will be running on the treadmill for a while, until either the ice disappears or i get some yaktrax (probably next month when i have to order books for my classes online anyway)

Maria, Monday, 4 January 2010 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

Ogmor, if you're running six miles now and it's feeling easy, then you will be absolutely fine for a half-marathon in the spring, no problem at all. Just concentrate on getting one longer, slow run in every week, and make that a priority over all your other running. Sounds like your well on your way though.

Also, I still haven't run a single step in 2010, so I'm a fine one to be dishing out advice.

haha me neither! but new year's day + a weekend = slow start to the year i guess. gonna get started today.

Maria, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

i ran on treadmill saturday, that is all.

tehresa, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

It is cold and I have a cold, so I'm at home working on my rest technique.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:09 (sixteen years ago)

im goin out as soon as i digest these crepes

ice cr?m, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:11 (sixteen years ago)

one horse open sleigh is hard to beat, a suitably auspicious sighting for breaking 10 miles, congrats!

Thanks Nick, I feel pretty good right now, as long as I get out regularly I should be able to concentrate on the more noble goal of trying to beat the ppl I know and love, who are more experienced runners. If you want any pointers on rest technique, my skills are through the roof.

ogmor, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

You and me both! There should be a rolling rolling over in bed thread.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

thx for teh congrats dudes - it weird i just clicked into this new gear where i can go so much further - id been pretty much plateaued for the last year or so then boom

ice cr?m, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:25 (sixteen years ago)

So great when that happens.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

I ran today! First time in '10. Three miles, wandering aimlessly through the Stanford campus. Tomorrow I'm going to try the dish run.

Only 1997 miles till I reach my 2010 goal.

Jeff, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

ran two five miles (on consecutive days no less) and a four this week, felt good

cozwn, Friday, 8 January 2010 12:43 (sixteen years ago)

You're kicking my arse in 2010, coz.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Friday, 8 January 2010 12:48 (sixteen years ago)

kinky

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 8 January 2010 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

I'm only running so much cos there's no way I'm riding my bike in this weather; was going to run later too but seem to have tweaked my knee a little somehow so best to rest it I think

cozwn, Friday, 8 January 2010 12:52 (sixteen years ago)

i think i managed to strain my hamstring attempting to run my usual outdoor mileage on the treadmill last week and now i'm taking several days off running entirely (walking two blocks to the store hurts still). disappointing because this pretty much means january's going to be a reduced mileage month but i guess there's always february, and it'll even be light before class then!

Maria, Friday, 8 January 2010 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

I decided to walk to work the other day (abt 4 miles) and somehow managed to hurt my back a little. How is that possible when running doesn't hurt my back at all? It was a lovely long walk though.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Friday, 8 January 2010 14:53 (sixteen years ago)

is it snowy where you are? maybe you slipped a little and pulled something.

Maria, Friday, 8 January 2010 14:57 (sixteen years ago)

It wasn't snowy at the time but now we have like a foot of it.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Friday, 8 January 2010 15:01 (sixteen years ago)

Finally ran the Stanford dish this morning. Oh man, I am not used to hills. I was jogging very slowly up the first big one and I thought I was going to die by the time I got to the top. I had to stop and walk for about a minute. It ended up taking me about 38 minutes to go the 3.4 miles. Also, running downhills can be terrifying.

Jeff, Monday, 11 January 2010 07:00 (sixteen years ago)

i think i love hills. i still have never attempted the super giant hill though. running down hills is a lot rougher on my shins :(

i have been jogging at dusk and i really like it! might get a headlamp. something kind of awesome about the dark.

tehresa, Monday, 11 January 2010 07:03 (sixteen years ago)

omg, haven't run or done any exercise since September. This is ridiculous and tomorrow I'm going to try & find somewhere to run... my nearest cheapo gym doesn't have treadmills; I can't afford another gym and although I have always written off outdoor running in the UK I'm going to give it a go here...

I think I may fall down dead after about 3 mins; either that or I'll get sucked into a coffee shop.

Not the real Village People, Monday, 11 January 2010 07:38 (sixteen years ago)

hills are cool, i like them. don't live near any now though.

my hamstring is getting better, saturday i tried going 4 miles and had to turn back after 1.5 but yesterday it was just tight rather than painful so i'm on the mend. now i just have to tackle the getting-up-early problem, what's the likelihood i'm actually going to get out of bed at 6:30 to run instead of getting another half an hour or hour of sleep?

Maria, Monday, 11 January 2010 17:09 (sixteen years ago)

any idea what i should do about achilles tendon pain? it feels like it's more internal and there's no sign of a blister.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 11 January 2010 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

Sign up for the 2010 Chicago Marathaon opens on 2/1. Should I sign up? I suppose the question is, do I want to run a marathon. I'm not sure, I go back and forth. I have no doubts that I could, especially with 10 months of prep time.

Jeff, Tuesday, 12 January 2010 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

i think i have achilles tendonitis! this is my very first athletic injury. while it hurts, i am a little bit proud at the same time.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 20:59 (sixteen years ago)

stretch and rest!
could it be shoe-related?

tehresa, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

i think it's from my hiking boots that i wore on my walk to work in the snow. they rub this little area on my upper heel and i think it just got worse from there.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

sad though, because i love those boots and they're new!

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

while it hurts, i am a little bit proud at the same time.

Congrats on your injury! Get better soon though eh?

BTW Jeff, I agree you'd have no problems doing a marathon.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 00:39 (sixteen years ago)

i thought the thaw had set in properly but i nearly killed myself slipping on the ice this morning.

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 14 January 2010 13:55 (sixteen years ago)

Still trying to get back into a rhythm with my miles. So far I've only run 19.7 miles in January. What is surprising to me is how slow I'm getting. I'm averaging 9:21 a mile, when at the end of November I was down to 8:51 overall. I could just blame the weather, but I won't.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

hey i have actually run more than jeff this month! (at a drastically slower speed)
use that for motivation? bc i suck!

actually if you want to get technical about it i am sort of down. (tehresa), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:01 (sixteen years ago)

ie, you don't wanna be like me, so move those feet, sir!

actually if you want to get technical about it i am sort of down. (tehresa), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:01 (sixteen years ago)

or take a break, you earned it!

actually if you want to get technical about it i am sort of down. (tehresa), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:01 (sixteen years ago)
