you guys, i ran on the treadmill for the first time since august yesterday, and i'm FASTER now! not ridiculously so, but i am doing 8:30-9:15 min miles instead of 9:30-10! next september's a long time away, but if i can keep improving until then maybe i'll be able to join the local running club next fall (they apparently do a 7-8 min pace on group runs).
― Maria, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)
did my 7 miles yesterday because i felt the need to live up to you, dude, thanks!

― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)
srsly at he beginning of june she was thinking abt joining a running club but was all worried she couldnt run 3 miles - she ran 20 yesterday - wtf!
― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)
woah nice
wd love to do a marathon - going from running 3 miles to 26 seems like such a big gap to bridge tho
― thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)
a mile every week (or two) would do it i guess! still i am impressed by that level of motivation. my improvement is sooooo slow in comparison.
― Maria, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)
this girl has literally zero athletic experience - she has prob a good body for running but its not like shes one of those super tiny ladies - i just dont know man
― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)
yeah it's the motivation/mental strength/commitment that's impressive and daunting
― thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)
she got really into the social aspect has a running club and buddies etc prob helps a lot
― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)
i've been at this for 6 mo. and i'm proud of my 10 min miles :-/
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)
uh also i am not sure if this was a "long" 5k or if my nike+ sensor is a liar because it told me i ran 5.5k instead of 5k,
^had a similar xperience last time i did a 5k w/ the nike+
i trust the course so think its somethin 2 do w/ stride length or...idk
― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)
should note shes still pretty slow but whatevs she ran 20 miles xp
― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)
That is very impressive.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)
dude, i've been at it 4 years and have only just gotten down to 9 :P i am dead last in line for any quick improvement prizes.
― Maria, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)
i used to run faster when i was in college but yeah now i'm prob around 9-10 minute. the only way to get faster is doing intervals, pretty much.
― welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 18:47 (sixteen years ago)
at least in any reasonable amount of time. increasing mileage does help with speed in the long term but it isn't fast.
― Maria, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)
I got an Nathan 4 pack hydration belt for Xmas. Unfortunately I already have one. Would anyone like to buy this one? Never used, size medium, $20 + shipping. http://bit.ly/8opP

the only way she's getting hydrated is if Whiney gets at her.

Been doing quite a lot of running in the snow. Went out on the hills on Sunday and it was absolutely beautiful, a really magical morning and so quiet too, hardly anyone around at all. Did pass a couple of other runners. Was so excited to be out there that I tried to high five the first guy. He misread my intentions and just did this very English embarrassed wave thing instead as we passed, so I totally missed his hand and ended up slapping him on the head.

also i'll be honest -- they're about 12 on a normal day and 10 if i'm feeling sprightly
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 23:28 (sixteen years ago)
Ran 6 miles today in the snow. 10 min/mile. It was hard, it definitely takes more exertion to run through snow than it does on pavement/gravel. First run I've had in 13 days.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 23:53 (sixteen years ago)
ran 5 miles in the snow today w/my dad; felt fine afterwards, few hairy moments on the ice tho
― twentysomething fuck (cozwn), Saturday, 26 December 2009 11:18 (sixteen years ago)
yikes be careful everyone!
a couple days ago i ran 9 miles as my last "long run" of 2009, then jan. 1 i want to do 10 miles as my first run of 2010. gimmicky? yes. but it's totally inspiring me!
― Maria, Saturday, 26 December 2009 13:14 (sixteen years ago)
i did a short run in the neighborhood behind my parents' because they have partial sidewalks. but in some places the sidewalk slants at like 30º angle! it was a mess.
― tehresa, Saturday, 26 December 2009 16:32 (sixteen years ago)
I thought my dad (frequent 10k and occasional marathon runner) was going to take me to the pain cave yesterday but I felt fine going at his pace for longer than I've run before (I usu. do 3 miles quickly as opposed to his 5 slowly) but I think december has killed my general fitness levels (cold/manflu for first 10, cold snap for the next 10) => fuuuuuuuck my legs are aching today
― cozwn, Sunday, 27 December 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)
I've gotten a cold now too. I'm just going to write off December and start anew in January.
― Jeff, Sunday, 27 December 2009 21:41 (sixteen years ago)
i think you did plenty well for the whole year so don't feel bad!
― tehresa, Sunday, 27 December 2009 21:44 (sixteen years ago)
Tehresa OTM. Get well soon Jeff!
Coz, your dad sounds just like mine. Love going running with him, good to have that time to talk.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Monday, 28 December 2009 10:12 (sixteen years ago)
Can't believe you guys are still going out so much, I've not tried since the ice appeared. I felt bad, but your stoicism acting like it's no thing is totally alien to my lazy cold meat and chocolate seasonal mentality.
― ogmor, Monday, 28 December 2009 12:17 (sixteen years ago)
man, what he said times three
― lazy cold meat and chocolate seasonal mentality (forksclovetofu), Monday, 28 December 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)
i'm at the gym for reals. no way in hell i'm going to run on ice/snow. my shoes would be wet within minutes. i don't mind the cold so much as the frozen water.
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 28 December 2009 14:32 (sixteen years ago)
first run in 3 weeks (illness, then too much work, then xmas) - it was a real struggle but goddamn it felt good. a bit of trepidation as i'm pretty sure that running in these arctic temperatures is what got me ill in the first place, it had better not come back again.
― lex pretend, Monday, 28 December 2009 14:34 (sixteen years ago)
First run of the 10s and I took it slow w/my only aim being to stay moving and on my feet for an hour. Had a ball in the snow in the end & did way over six miles which is great for me especially post-Christmas. Rediscovered that forgettable equation: Slow = steady breathing = relaxed = daydreaming/enjoying the scenery = good times = fast. Signed up to a half marathon at the end of March, gotta get cracking.
― ogmor, Monday, 4 January 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)
my 1st ever 10+ mile run a couple days ago - it was pretty rad except for the huge mountain i had to run over - it was like 3+ miles of alternating v steep and somewhat steep - gwana choose a new route next time
it was all made worth it tho by the fact that when i was flagging around mile 8 i passed A MOTHERFUCKING ONE HORSE OPEN SLEIGH JUST DRIVING DOWN THE SNOWY ROAD and immediately got so happy and a new surge of energy
― ice cr?m, Monday, 4 January 2010 15:40 (sixteen years ago)
Congratulations on the 10!
I still haven't run this new year. I'm in CA for work though and it is in the 60s here!!!! Now if I can just get out of the office.
― Jeff, Monday, 4 January 2010 17:53 (sixteen years ago)
Going for a run on black ice takes a bit of confidence, but somehow it's easier than walking on it. Cambers and corners feel dangerous though.
― Vasco da Gama, Monday, 4 January 2010 18:11 (sixteen years ago)
it always feels dangerous to me! i will be running on the treadmill for a while, until either the ice disappears or i get some yaktrax (probably next month when i have to order books for my classes online anyway)
― Maria, Monday, 4 January 2010 18:23 (sixteen years ago)
Ogmor, if you're running six miles now and it's feeling easy, then you will be absolutely fine for a half-marathon in the spring, no problem at all. Just concentrate on getting one longer, slow run in every week, and make that a priority over all your other running. Sounds like your well on your way though.
Also, I still haven't run a single step in 2010, so I'm a fine one to be dishing out advice.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Monday, 4 January 2010 18:58 (sixteen years ago)
haha me neither! but new year's day + a weekend = slow start to the year i guess. gonna get started today.
― Maria, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:03 (sixteen years ago)
i ran on treadmill saturday, that is all.
― tehresa, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:03 (sixteen years ago)
It is cold and I have a cold, so I'm at home working on my rest technique.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Monday, 4 January 2010 19:09 (sixteen years ago)
im goin out as soon as i digest these crepes
― ice cr?m, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:11 (sixteen years ago)
one horse open sleigh is hard to beat, a suitably auspicious sighting for breaking 10 miles, congrats!
Thanks Nick, I feel pretty good right now, as long as I get out regularly I should be able to concentrate on the more noble goal of trying to beat the ppl I know and love, who are more experienced runners. If you want any pointers on rest technique, my skills are through the roof.
― ogmor, Monday, 4 January 2010 19:22 (sixteen years ago)
