haha, you want to come to the UK where hooking up with a rich and famous man is a career aspiration. There's a whole culture of women-who-go-out-with-Premiership-footballers, where (1) that's all they do and (2) people like and admire them and want to be them.

The difference being that these girls were pretty z-list to start with, if that, and they have used subsequent press coverage to their advantage. Possible exception = Victoria Beckham, whose post-Spice fame is surely built around who she is married to rather than anything she's actually done, but she was arguably more famous than him to start with.

Success at being a celebrity gains very little for Katie Holmes, which is why I'm not getting your argument.

I DIDN'T SAY IT WAS ABOUT GAIN, Y'ALL ILLITERATE FREAKS -- haha okay well maybe parenthetically, but this coversation was about Big Changes in Public Perception (not income), which was what I was talking about re: Jolie. (I said "and acting career" parenthetically cuz I think entrenching yourself in the public consciousness via tabloid can help seal the deal a little as far as what echelon of star you're gonna be perceived as from then on. And Angelina's big tabloid-royalty exposure moment sealed in her celebrity kinda at the top of its game!)

Actually wait I give up on this cause I'm not sure everyone can read? We were talking about public perception of people like Jolie (in horrible paintings of SUPERMARKETS), not acting careers. I opined parenthetically that Holmes now has this huge public awareness and weird perception, whereas if she hadn't married Cruise I'm not sure her acting career would have provided anything similar. Y'all agree with that, and yet for some reason have an issue? (Sex-wise we could just as easily point out that Cruise's public image would be way different and smaller without Holmes, though no-Holmes might have meant no-Freakout and saved him some trouble.)

Kate is pretty OTM; I think there's a caveat there in that I believe the culturally-accepted definition of "genuine", regardless of whether it is applied to celebrities or "ordinary people", is a myth.

There are relative levels of (appearing) genuine-ness, though, and AJ's is a lot more genuine and "wtf I am going to ignore the cameras completely I am here to do a job" than most. I DID say upthread that it was just my not-very-critical impression but in the pantheon of celebrities who get noticed/photoed, she's on the awesome end of the scale. I read People magazine, I see a lot of this shit.

OK... I get what you're saying. But she is an Actor. She knows how to act. And she has a very good ~~director~~ publicist telling her how to act to come across as the noble amazon with poise in People magazine or whatever.

I guess what I'm saying is that I admire but mistrust the transformation. It definitely takes skill. But give credit where it's due, as to whose skill that is. Acting skills ("I'm here to do a job!" rather than Ginger Spicing out at the UN is a show of acting capacity, innit?) or PR skills.

What it comes down to, is, really - do *you* relate to the person she is portraying. I don't. And if I were to meet Her Personna, I would never want to befriend her or have her in my circle, there's an element of ... I don't know. I'd never trust her.

(But then again, my Celebrity Amazon crazy chick I'd like to have sleepover parties with crush is Courtney Love, and I know there are many who utterly despise her public personna.)

Really I do not blame Jolie for any of it though if I were in her position I would A) not date Brad Pitt because he has terrible hygene and a smug face B) insist that he confront his wife and sort out that situation before engaging in any hanky panky. I judge none of them, Pitt is douchey but I have no idea what the situation was between him and Aniston and do not want to even pretend to know.
