yes, happy belated birthday ailsa! x

jed_, Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks you guys! Are we doing drinking over Christmas at all?

ailsa, Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:29 (sixteen years ago)

Another we burst just there as I cycled home from work too - in shorts & all!

krakow, Sunday, 20 December 2009 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

Are they bothering to grit or look after the road here at all? I was (foolishly) out in Coatbridge this evening and it was a total joke. The main roads were sheets of ice, even with heavy traffic. Terrifying.

I saw a huge lorry end up stuck half-way up a hill in a slow moving two-lane traffic queue because he didn't have enough traction to continue.

krakow, Monday, 21 December 2009 20:59 (sixteen years ago)

THIS IS WHAT I WAS SAYING

they spent the salt money on the commonwealth games

cozwn, Monday, 21 December 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

Was snowing in Hamilton the other day - apparently if it snows it never lies. It's lying.

Same in Muirkirk (wilds of Ayrshire) - lots of snow etc. Happily, if it keeps going, I won't get to work in Hamilton tomorrow.

It's true, it rarely lies here. Last year was the first proper snowfall in 18 years since we moved here. But that was nothing on this years.

Hah Muirkirk, in P7 my school St Ninian's (Prestwick) sent my class to some sort of outward bound centre. Kaimes or Kames or something like that. Plenty of snow there.

I had two taxi drivers tell me this today. Pavements are lethal here.

stet, Monday, 21 December 2009 21:34 (sixteen years ago)

I live round the corner from the local gritter depot, and the difference in road/ice interface from their turnoff to my driveway compared to the bit from their turnoff to the rest of the world is staggering. I skidded round two corners before getting to the bit of the road the gritters go up and down, and then it was all OK. My driveway and especially back patio are very much akin to an icerink though.

ailsa, Monday, 21 December 2009 21:39 (sixteen years ago)

My icy wee fall has cost me a possibly fractured elbow and most likely several weeks off work (selling CDs one-(wrong)-handed isn't much good). I'm pretty angry at the council or whoever was responsible for not gritting that road or whatever was approriate. I didn't realise until I fell that it wasn't just wet, but one huge sheet of ice. It was a main road, totally full of traffic and didn't seem to have been treated at all, which is madness and dangerous.

krakow, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

do the council have a legal responsibility to grit I wonder

thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

That was what I wondered as I walked home. I was militantly and frustratedly musing on whether one would have any recourse for accidents like this because of the council failing to look after the roads sufficiently.

krakow, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

"A highway authority are under a duty to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that safe passage along a highway is not endangered by snow or ice."

thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:04 (sixteen years ago)

any thing good happening on the south side for hogmanay?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

I've heard that you can claim compensation for tripping over un-maintained paving stones and the like, so maybe this would be similar?

What should I do if I were to pursue this idea? I'm certainly going to be bored enough for the next few weeks.

In seriousness, because things are so diificult in the record shop, I'm almost certainly going to suffer financially because of being off work for an extended period.

krakow, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

IANApersonalinjuryL, best first step is to talk informally w/someone at a firm like irwin mitchell?

thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

^ Yeh, I think that's best. Approach the council yourself without any legal backup and you'll get nowhere. I don't think you'll be the only one, either ...

What do you want? This ain't an egg shop (grimly fiendish), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

"It’s absolutely terrible. It has taken us 10 minutes to walk less than 200 yards. The dog has already taken a tumble."

:D

thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:25 (sixteen years ago)

aye this has been fucking murder walking to work. Almost fell on my cunt too many times to count.

Sorry to hear about the arm, Alex.

Pedro Paramore (jim), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 16:44 (sixteen years ago)

I have just bought a pair of these. They'll arrive too late, but I really should have been arsed to buy them after skidding to work in last year's freeze.

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 09:11 (sixteen years ago)

My sister & I are going to drive down to Liverpool on Xmas Eve, leaving about 11am. Where are you heading?

krakow, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 10:36 (sixteen years ago)

(She'd probably have a hissy fit at me offering lifts to internet peeps, but screw it, I'm serious if it did happen to fit.)

krakow, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 10:37 (sixteen years ago)

Hey Krakow sorry to hear about your accident. Hope it gets better soon. Have a safe journey tomorrow, and ward fowler and anyone else travelling.

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 10:54 (sixteen years ago)

No worries, just sent you a wee email Ward.

krakow, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 11:00 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks for the kind thoughts too Pfunk, ailsa, Ward, Jim et al. I got a much better sleep last night after dosing on pain killers just before bed and strategically placing a spare pillow as arm rest, so that's helped the mood a lot.

Not looking forward to having to drop into work now to collect some presents that I'd left there unfortunately. Sure to be awkward and guilt inducing.

krakow, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 11:04 (sixteen years ago)

thanks krakow, i can't check my email until this evening - meant to say that obv i will pay for petrol, should the need arise (I'm hoping for a snow free day today, so that there is a train service tomorrow...fingers crossed)

and thanks for yr gd wishes, pfunk - a safe and happy xmas to all glasgow ilxors

lol d.tr\/mp is a total fan-dan; really wish I'd saved those e-mails from his legal team I saw (at DundW) that explicitly said their aim ws to marginalise and force out the maverick landowners on the estate

Ward Fowler, Sunday, 8 August 2010 06:27 (fifteen years ago)

I was in Edinburgh yesterday, and they were a thing over there as well.

ailsa, Sunday, 8 August 2010 09:15 (fifteen years ago)

Flying ant day. Pavements were crawling, too

stet, Sunday, 8 August 2010 11:12 (fifteen years ago)

I'm on t'other side of the country but lately we've had a plague of aphids the likes of which ye've never seen (or I've never seen, at least). A real fog of them. I'd get indoors and have to brush literally twenty off of myself. Calmed down a bit now, though.
