same here. i am literally too lazy to go to the gym. am considering it today because it's 14 degrees, but for the time it would take to get there and back i could run two miles!
― Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:10 (sixteen years ago)
i ran 7+ in in 14 degrees just two days ago have u heard
― ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)
I've only run 20 miles in December. This is killing me.
I've started using RunningAhead.com. It actually has pretty good Garmin integration. Here's my profile.
― Jeff, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)
Can't do the gym, I'd rather run in single digit weather.
the gym is okay but running around outside is so nice
― ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i know i'm not the most hardcore one here, that's not news! i feel encouraged now though, i'm putting the run off until this afternoon when it's a few degrees warmer and then i'll see how much i feel like doing. (achy knees could be another limiting factor, they tend to bug me over 5 miles and are acting up a little lately. tips? i do deep knee bends and wall sits sometimes to help.)
― Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:18 (sixteen years ago)
my running fell apart since november. was just about to start up again and now i have a cold. hoping it's not strep throat. at least if i get better i can use my parents' treadmill when i go home next week.i love running outside when it's cold too. it's hard to get going but once you do it's like you make your own heater.
― harbl, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)
when it gets to single digits tho im all naaah
― ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:23 (sixteen years ago)
yeah. 15-20 is ok though.
― harbl, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)
i'm still getting used to it and figuring out layers all over again, it didn't get below about 35 here until this week.
― Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)
isn't it dangerous w/ice tho? I imagine it wd be on the back-streets I usu. run
― cozwn, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)
yah u got to watch for ice def
― ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:48 (sixteen years ago)
yak trax!
― Jeff, Friday, 18 December 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)
so far it has been warm enough when it's rained and sunny enough when it's cold that it's not iced over yet. i'm very appreciative.
― Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)
should prob invest in some yak trax as im abt to be in vermont for three cold ass months - they work nice?
― ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 16:42 (sixteen years ago)
I've only used them once and they worked really well.
― Jeff, Friday, 18 December 2009 16:46 (sixteen years ago)
i am scared to run with other people bc they'd be like 'damn u slow!'but i did 1 min faster on 5k yesterday!now i'm concerned that tomorrow is a morning thing and i have not been sleeping well at all and i usually run in the early afternoon and morning might kill me :(
― tehresa, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
also re: solo running, i find it awesome for the head.
― tehresa, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)
tehresa i also am afraid of people thinking i'm too slow! there's a running club at my school that i've never even checked out for that reason. i mean, the girl i know in it runs a 20 minute 5k, and mine's more like 30.
kinda forgot how many miles i've done this month, which is bad because i really think i'm going to hit 100 finally. i *think* i'm up to 60 so far. could even be 65 but i can't quite remember whether i ran on tuesday (i had a final paper due and frankly i don't remember much of tuesday at all).
― Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)
i would be afraid of a club! the one i'm doing tomorrow appears to be all ages/speeds from the pictures, and they mix everyone together (5k, 10k, walkers, and relay teams) so i can just blend in and not feel so lame for being slow. heck, i am just amazed i am doing this at all! 6 months ago i would have had a laughing fit if you said i would be doing this.
― tehresa, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)
Good luck tehresa, I'm sure you'll be just fine!
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Friday, 18 December 2009 18:43 (sixteen years ago)
that sounds fun and low pressure! good luck, you will kick ass!
― Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:46 (sixteen years ago)
thanks!
― tehresa, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:49 (sixteen years ago)
I wouldn't mind running with other people. Problem is that I'm not particularly social to begin with. That's why I post on ilx.
Chicago has a huge running community. I actually joined a local organization to get discounts on races. Haven't done any of the events or meetups though. Lots of serious runners. Serious runners are serious.
― Jeff, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:51 (sixteen years ago)
the cool thing abt running w/other people is it makes u faster / gives u more endurance
― ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)
did my 7 miles yesterday because i felt the need to live up to you, dude, thanks!
― Maria, Saturday, 19 December 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)
i went running last night for the first time in WEEEEEEEKS
short (~3 miles), but all in the snow, around lake of the isles, at dusk, super beautiful imo
plus running in uneven snow is so much more fun/bang for your buck than grinding it out on paved trails
― being being kiss-ass fake nice (gbx), Saturday, 19 December 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)
hey guys i got not last place!uh also i am not sure if this was a "long" 5k or if my nike+ sensor is a liar because it told me i ran 5.5k instead of 5k, so maybe all my practicing was cheating. anyway, for a cold and rainy morning i was pretty happy!!
― tehresa, Saturday, 19 December 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)
W00T!!! Grand stuff - hope you enjoyed it.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Saturday, 19 December 2009 19:59 (sixteen years ago)
i did! despite a couple really fast 10ker dudes lapping me at one point!
― tehresa, Saturday, 19 December 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)
just had my first experience with slush :-/can't say i loved it, but i'm glad i did itsideways snow coming off the lake needling me in the face only lasted the 5-7 minutes of lakefront i was on. good job on the racing, folks
on the upside, puddlejumping through the snow while listening to metal is pretty fun
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Saturday, 19 December 2009 20:37 (sixteen years ago)
Haha, awesome!
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Saturday, 19 December 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)
i haven't been running since last time i went was during the floods and i had to run basically underwater for parts where the roads were abt a foot under the water, was kinda cool and made me feel like i was braving some elements maybe but now i am a lazy doughball and feelin ashamed
― plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 20 December 2009 00:49 (sixteen years ago)
you guys, i ran on the treadmill for the first time since august yesterday, and i'm FASTER now! not ridiculously so, but i am doing 8:30-9:15 min miles instead of 9:30-10! next september's a long time away, but if i can keep improving until then maybe i'll be able to join the local running club next fall (they apparently do a 7-8 min pace on group runs).

― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)
woah nice
wd love to do a marathon - going from running 3 miles to 26 seems like such a big gap to bridge tho
― thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)
a mile every week (or two) would do it i guess! still i am impressed by that level of motivation. my improvement is sooooo slow in comparison.
― Maria, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)
this girl has literally zero athletic experience - she has prob a good body for running but its not like shes one of those super tiny ladies - i just dont know man
― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)
yeah it's the motivation/mental strength/commitment that's impressive and daunting
― thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)
she got really into the social aspect has a running club and buddies etc prob helps a lot
― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)
i've been at this for 6 mo. and i'm proud of my 10 min miles :-/
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)
uh also i am not sure if this was a "long" 5k or if my nike+ sensor is a liar because it told me i ran 5.5k instead of 5k,
^had a similar xperience last time i did a 5k w/ the nike+
i trust the course so think its somethin 2 do w/ stride length or...idk
― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)
should note shes still pretty slow but whatevs she ran 20 miles xp
― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)
That is very impressive.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)
dude, i've been at it 4 years and have only just gotten down to 9 :P i am dead last in line for any quick improvement prizes.
― Maria, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)
i used to run faster when i was in college but yeah now i'm prob around 9-10 minute. the only way to get faster is doing intervals, pretty much.
― welcome to gudbergur (harbl), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 18:47 (sixteen years ago)
at least in any reasonable amount of time. increasing mileage does help with speed in the long term but it isn't fast.
― Maria, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)
