:D

Smart! I had a great run this morning too over the frosty fields to work. So still and calm, really beautiful. My breathing is a bit fucked though, cos I bust a couple of ribs at the veg patch on Saturday.

I haven't run at all since I've been on business in Palo Alto. Working 12 hour plus days just isn't conducive to running. That's too bad because it's over 60 degrees and I wanted to run around and check out Stanford's campus.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

Next off to North Carolina to visit family for Xmas. I'm afraid if I run I'll either get hit by a car or shot by deer hunters.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

hah! where in nc?
i will be in sc, where they do not believe in sidewalks. my biggest fear is getting hit by a teenager driving a luxury suv.

tehresa, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

About six miles from here. Certainly no sidewalks.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

that looks kind of awesome!
cross country running time?

tehresa, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

I lived there for 20 years. Totally not awesome. Basically I would be running by a bunch of hog lagoons.

O_o
reminds me of my days doing youth in government when i wrote a bill about restricting pig runoff!

tehresa, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

I hope everyone's running goes well over the holidays. My last Saturday 5K was 25.37, but I will be missing it this week. I want to get in a 10K or two between Christmas and New Year, family stuff permitting.

Hope the ribs get better soon, Nick. I sympathise, having cracked a rib and sprung a rib cartilege a couple of years ago. It still hurts from time-to-time :(

Dr.C, Thursday, 17 December 2009 11:04 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks. It's a weird injury, only really hurts when I'm stretching or lifting things, and it's mostly okay during running until you start breathing really deeply or coughing and then - wouch! Done it before actually - slipped on a drain cover when I was running and came down heavily on a curbstone. I hate running on slippery pavements...

Good luck with the 10k's anyway!

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Thursday, 17 December 2009 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

oh god dr. c you make me feel so slow!!!!!

tehresa, Thursday, 17 December 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

my practice 5k yesterday was 33min haha but that is actually decent for me.

tehresa, Thursday, 17 December 2009 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

The time doesn't matter though - the main thing is just DOING IT. I get a bit obsessed with times, cos I'm on a bit of a mission to push it as hard as possible at the moment, but that's just me trying to prove that I can get back to fitness. I'll soon blob out on turkey and christmas pud, which will curn by enthusiasm a bit :)

Dr.C, Friday, 18 December 2009 09:50 (sixteen years ago)

curn by = 'curb my' obv.

Or something.....

Dr.C, Friday, 18 December 2009 09:51 (sixteen years ago)

are most ppl here solo runners?

cozwn, Friday, 18 December 2009 10:23 (sixteen years ago)

i am. i actually run more when i have very little alone time because that's my excuse. (although i also run more when i have lots of it because i get bored.)

this thread made me look for races around here, but there are none coming up because it appears to be indoor track season. running indoors + fast short distances + on a team = really not my thing.

Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 14:17 (sixteen years ago)

i enjoy a running partner - makes it all much easier i find - usually too much trouble to coordinate tho

i mean one of the things i love abt running is i can just get up and go

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 14:47 (sixteen years ago)

same here. i am literally too lazy to go to the gym. am considering it today because it's 14 degrees, but for the time it would take to get there and back i could run two miles!

Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

i ran 7+ in in 14 degrees just two days ago have u heard

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

I've only run 20 miles in December. This is killing me.

I've started using RunningAhead.com. It actually has pretty good Garmin integration. Here's my profile.

Jeff, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

Can't do the gym, I'd rather run in single digit weather.

Jeff, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

the gym is okay but running around outside is so nice

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i know i'm not the most hardcore one here, that's not news! i feel encouraged now though, i'm putting the run off until this afternoon when it's a few degrees warmer and then i'll see how much i feel like doing. (achy knees could be another limiting factor, they tend to bug me over 5 miles and are acting up a little lately. tips? i do deep knee bends and wall sits sometimes to help.)

Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

my running fell apart since november. was just about to start up again and now i have a cold. hoping it's not strep throat. at least if i get better i can use my parents' treadmill when i go home next week.
i love running outside when it's cold too. it's hard to get going but once you do it's like you make your own heater.

harbl, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

when it gets to single digits tho im all naaah

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

yeah. 15-20 is ok though.

harbl, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

i'm still getting used to it and figuring out layers all over again, it didn't get below about 35 here until this week.

Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

isn't it dangerous w/ice tho? I imagine it wd be on the back-streets I usu. run

cozwn, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

yah u got to watch for ice def

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

yak trax!

Jeff, Friday, 18 December 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

so far it has been warm enough when it's rained and sunny enough when it's cold that it's not iced over yet. i'm very appreciative.

Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

should prob invest in some yak trax as im abt to be in vermont for three cold ass months - they work nice?

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

I've only used them once and they worked really well.

Jeff, Friday, 18 December 2009 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

i am scared to run with other people bc they'd be like 'damn u slow!'
but i did 1 min faster on 5k yesterday!
now i'm concerned that tomorrow is a morning thing and i have not been sleeping well at all and i usually run in the early afternoon and morning might kill me :(

tehresa, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

also re: solo running, i find it awesome for the head.

tehresa, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

tehresa i also am afraid of people thinking i'm too slow! there's a running club at my school that i've never even checked out for that reason. i mean, the girl i know in it runs a 20 minute 5k, and mine's more like 30.

kinda forgot how many miles i've done this month, which is bad because i really think i'm going to hit 100 finally. i *think* i'm up to 60 so far. could even be 65 but i can't quite remember whether i ran on tuesday (i had a final paper due and frankly i don't remember much of tuesday at all).

Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

i would be afraid of a club!
the one i'm doing tomorrow appears to be all ages/speeds from the pictures, and they mix everyone together (5k, 10k, walkers, and relay teams) so i can just blend in and not feel so lame for being slow. heck, i am just amazed i am doing this at all! 6 months ago i would have had a laughing fit if you said i would be doing this.

tehresa, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

Good luck tehresa, I'm sure you'll be just fine!

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Friday, 18 December 2009 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

that sounds fun and low pressure! good luck, you will kick ass!

Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:46 (sixteen years ago)

thanks!

tehresa, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

I wouldn't mind running with other people. Problem is that I'm not particularly social to begin with. That's why I post on ilx.

Chicago has a huge running community. I actually joined a local organization to get discounts on races. Haven't done any of the events or meetups though. Lots of serious runners. Serious runners are serious.

Jeff, Friday, 18 December 2009 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

the cool thing abt running w/other people is it makes u faster / gives u more endurance

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

did my 7 miles yesterday because i felt the need to live up to you, dude, thanks!

Maria, Saturday, 19 December 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

i went running last night for the first time in WEEEEEEEKS

short (~3 miles), but all in the snow, around lake of the isles, at dusk, super beautiful imo

plus running in uneven snow is so much more fun/bang for your buck than grinding it out on paved trails

being being kiss-ass fake nice (gbx), Saturday, 19 December 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

hey guys i got not last place!
uh also i am not sure if this was a "long" 5k or if my nike+ sensor is a liar because it told me i ran 5.5k instead of 5k, so maybe all my practicing was cheating. anyway, for a cold and rainy morning i was pretty happy!!

tehresa, Saturday, 19 December 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

W00T!!! Grand stuff - hope you enjoyed it.
