^me too. fuk winter

johnny crunch, Thursday, 10 December 2009 02:08 (sixteen years ago)

i just skipped it today, it was freezing rain. i'll try to make up for it tomorrow.

Maria, Thursday, 10 December 2009 02:10 (sixteen years ago)

First run this morning after 12 days of flu. Nice to be back, but coughing like an old bastard now.

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 11 December 2009 09:23 (sixteen years ago)

how are the legs though?

i am going to try a 5K in the gym at lunchtime today, and a 'real' one in the park tomorrow.

Dr.C, Friday, 11 December 2009 10:06 (sixteen years ago)

Legs were fine actually, it's the lungs that weren't too happy.

How many times a week are you up to now?

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 11 December 2009 10:15 (sixteen years ago)

I'm doing 2 5Ks in the gym and one or 2 outdoors. I will probably extend one of the outdoor runs to around 8-10K soon. The Saturday morning 5K race might stop on days when I play rugby - first game back is pencilled in for boxing day!

Dr.C, Friday, 11 December 2009 11:05 (sixteen years ago)

Upping the distance a bit should make the shorter runs a lot easier. There's a regular Saturday 5k near me too, I should get along to that every now again for a bit of faster running, cos that's what I'm really missing in my training.

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 11 December 2009 11:46 (sixteen years ago)

all the 5ks around here are sunday mornings, so i usually pick church and go on afternoon run instead. i wish there were a saturday race!

Maria, Friday, 11 December 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

I have one this Sunday, a Rudolph Ramble. I think I have to wear antlers. Then off to Palo Alto and warmer weather for a few days. I hope to get in some runs there.

Jeff, Friday, 11 December 2009 13:38 (sixteen years ago)

25.33 on the treadmill at lunchtime. I am mildly disappointed, cos I did the first 2K far too fast and was just hanging on from there. The last K was agony - not even watching the yummy-mummies' fitness class as I ran could make it fun.

Antlers wouldn't have helped either.

Dr.C, Friday, 11 December 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

i am curious about how long it would take me to feel 'ready' to do a 5k.
i generally do 3-3.5 miles when i go out but i break it up into a mix of running and walking. i worry if i ran the whole thing i would not be able to walk afterwards!

tehresa, Friday, 11 December 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

People take walking breaks in 5k's all the time. It's no problem. Just don't line up at the front.

Jeff, Friday, 11 December 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

i feel like it would be cheating?

tehresa, Friday, 11 December 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think so.

Maria, Friday, 11 December 2009 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

hmmmm there is a jingle bell thing sunday but i have a party sat night :(
another one in a park on the 19th... maybe i'll shoot for it? i looked at some results times from their previous races and it seems like i would not stick out like a sore, slow thumb (altho the top time from their november race was 16:59 wtf! that's fast!!!).

tehresa, Friday, 11 December 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

There will always be a few freaks running scary fast times. You'll be fine in the pack if it's a decent sized event.

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 11 December 2009 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

i think it's not too huge but they start the runners, walkers, and relays, 5k and 10k, all at the same time, so it'd probably be easy to blend!

now to see if i can squeeze it all in and get home and showered before a work meeting at 1pm...

tehresa, Friday, 11 December 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

Well go fer it then! And good luck!

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 11 December 2009 20:32 (sixteen years ago)

ok i registered! this is exciting!!! 6 months ago i would have laughed in your face if you told me i'd be doing this on a december saturday morning!

tehresa, Friday, 11 December 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

yay! have fun!

:D

tehresa, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 21:50 (sixteen years ago)

Smart! I had a great run this morning too over the frosty fields to work. So still and calm, really beautiful. My breathing is a bit fucked though, cos I bust a couple of ribs at the veg patch on Saturday.

I haven't run at all since I've been on business in Palo Alto. Working 12 hour plus days just isn't conducive to running. That's too bad because it's over 60 degrees and I wanted to run around and check out Stanford's campus.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

Next off to North Carolina to visit family for Xmas. I'm afraid if I run I'll either get hit by a car or shot by deer hunters.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)

hah! where in nc?
i will be in sc, where they do not believe in sidewalks. my biggest fear is getting hit by a teenager driving a luxury suv.

tehresa, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

lol i miss running in palo alto because its currently snowing here now and my apt is v cold never mind outside

gl tehresa!

About six miles from here. Certainly no sidewalks.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

that looks kind of awesome!
cross country running time?

tehresa, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

I lived there for 20 years. Totally not awesome. Basically I would be running by a bunch of hog lagoons.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:47 (sixteen years ago)

O_o
reminds me of my days doing youth in government when i wrote a bill about restricting pig runoff!

tehresa, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

I hope everyone's running goes well over the holidays. My last Saturday 5K was 25.37, but I will be missing it this week. I want to get in a 10K or two between Christmas and New Year, family stuff permitting.

Hope the ribs get better soon, Nick. I sympathise, having cracked a rib and sprung a rib cartilege a couple of years ago. It still hurts from time-to-time :(

Dr.C, Thursday, 17 December 2009 11:04 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks. It's a weird injury, only really hurts when I'm stretching or lifting things, and it's mostly okay during running until you start breathing really deeply or coughing and then - wouch! Done it before actually - slipped on a drain cover when I was running and came down heavily on a curbstone. I hate running on slippery pavements...

Good luck with the 10k's anyway!

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Thursday, 17 December 2009 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

oh god dr. c you make me feel so slow!!!!!

tehresa, Thursday, 17 December 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

my practice 5k yesterday was 33min haha but that is actually decent for me.

tehresa, Thursday, 17 December 2009 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

The time doesn't matter though - the main thing is just DOING IT. I get a bit obsessed with times, cos I'm on a bit of a mission to push it as hard as possible at the moment, but that's just me trying to prove that I can get back to fitness. I'll soon blob out on turkey and christmas pud, which will curn by enthusiasm a bit :)

Dr.C, Friday, 18 December 2009 09:50 (sixteen years ago)

curn by = 'curb my' obv.

Or something.....

Dr.C, Friday, 18 December 2009 09:51 (sixteen years ago)

are most ppl here solo runners?

cozwn, Friday, 18 December 2009 10:23 (sixteen years ago)

i am. i actually run more when i have very little alone time because that's my excuse. (although i also run more when i have lots of it because i get bored.)

this thread made me look for races around here, but there are none coming up because it appears to be indoor track season. running indoors + fast short distances + on a team = really not my thing.

Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 14:17 (sixteen years ago)

i enjoy a running partner - makes it all much easier i find - usually too much trouble to coordinate tho

i mean one of the things i love abt running is i can just get up and go

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 14:47 (sixteen years ago)

same here. i am literally too lazy to go to the gym. am considering it today because it's 14 degrees, but for the time it would take to get there and back i could run two miles!

Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

i ran 7+ in in 14 degrees just two days ago have u heard

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

I've only run 20 miles in December. This is killing me.

I've started using RunningAhead.com. It actually has pretty good Garmin integration. Here's my profile.

Jeff, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

Can't do the gym, I'd rather run in single digit weather.

Jeff, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

the gym is okay but running around outside is so nice

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i know i'm not the most hardcore one here, that's not news! i feel encouraged now though, i'm putting the run off until this afternoon when it's a few degrees warmer and then i'll see how much i feel like doing. (achy knees could be another limiting factor, they tend to bug me over 5 miles and are acting up a little lately. tips? i do deep knee bends and wall sits sometimes to help.)

Maria, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

my running fell apart since november. was just about to start up again and now i have a cold. hoping it's not strep throat. at least if i get better i can use my parents' treadmill when i go home next week.
i love running outside when it's cold too. it's hard to get going but once you do it's like you make your own heater.

harbl, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

when it gets to single digits tho im all naaah

ice cr?m, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

yeah. 15-20 is ok though.

harbl, Friday, 18 December 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

i'm still getting used to it and figuring out layers all over again, it didn't get below about 35 here until this week.
