yeha, red dwarf was nearly as good as the brittas empire. psyched for keeping up appearances now.
― Louis Cll (darraghmac), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 14:07 (sixteen years ago)
I'm fond of Red Dwarf. Looking back, a lot of the jokes are a bit crap, but the stories and characters hold up well for the most part. I think the first two series are the best though, which were both broadcast in the 80s. There was an interesting atmosphere of loneliness and claustrophobia which were overwhelmed by sci-fi goofiness later on.

no probs. I remember quite liking Animaniacs but not that shit in the clip. Slappy Squirrel, Goodfeathers and Chicken Boo were good tho.
I was recently disabused by the notion (implanted in my head by a friend from high school) that Slappy Squirrel was voiced by Kate Bush.

Very happy to see both Animaniacs and Red Dwarf place; both hold up much better than I would have guessed at the time.
I'm kind of surprised at the Animaniacs hating - it was such a smart and joyous show, with touches of both the maliciousness and surreality of the classic Warner's stuff, as well as their topicality. Wasn't all gold by any means, but it hit the mark more often than not. For me, it was one of the now rare kid's shows that adults not only wouldn't tear their eyes out when it was on but would want to sit down and watch. I was 20 when it debuted, and caught it as often as I could.

My favourite Vic & Bob series. I also have to post this clip, as it makes me unable to breathe from laughing.

Way the best Vic and Bob series, therefore one of the best things ever made. I don't know how shunted they were into doing the relatively accessible Shooting Stars but it was a poor cousin to their freeform stuff when it was in full effect.
― Noodle. Tool. 2. Kool (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)
too British; did not laugh.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:39 (sixteen years ago)
Somehow Vic and Bob's "impressions" always end up being truer than full-time impressionists' efforts, too.

If anyone can find a clip of that dog telling those stories that end with him saying "oh no, my wife's gonna kill me" in a cockney accent, I'll be eternally grateful if you link to it

C'mon, dude, I thought we'd all prepared ourselves for the fact that this poll was going to be pretty heavily tainted by nostalgia. I doubt there were very many of us who were old enough in the '90s to watch TV with a keen critical eye. Most of the stuff I voted for was stuff that I loved in high school. And mostly early high school, at that.

Agree with the somewhere above comment re: Shooting Stars. Would rather see Vic & Bob back with one of their knockabout sketch shows. That Stars For Eyes skit had me falling about laughing.
― DavidM, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)
anyway they jumped the shark at planet earth, everyone knows that.
i'm fully prepared for nostalgia- TMNT is a serious vote for me.
― Louis Cll (darraghmac), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)
Bang Bang it's Reeves and Mortimer wasn't bad.
― Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)
No that was great too but it was really Smell of under a different name and I kind of included it mentally in my vote for Smell of.
2 of my Top 10 are gone already then.
― Noodle. Tool. 2. Kool (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)
I didn't vote for it, but I sure wouldn't cry if it placed.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:53 (sixteen years ago)
Something tells me this poll is gonna get retarded pretty soon. In a good way.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)
^^^this. And I don't even have a wife.
My votes were fairly evenly split between shows I genuinely think were great and nostalgia shows. Except Knightmare really was great - fvck the haters.

the "tainted by nostalgia" crowd better be prepared to rattle off a long list of Good Serious Artistic Accomplishments in Television Sciences in the Nineteen Hundred and Nineties that didn't make the poll when this is all over.
