you can't wear socks in those things, it just occurred to me. or maybe they have to be toe socks?

― Maria, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 03:10 (sixteen years ago)
i finally forced myself to stop wimping out and went running again after almost 2.5 weeks off (sick for a week, then elliptical for a week) and it felt great but i went reallllly slowly and it was 30ΒΊ so my nose was running the whole time lol.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 00:46 (sixteen years ago)
^^^ i need to do this. i've been benched for a while now :-/

Welcome back!
I was going to run in the snow tonight, but it isn't sticking yet. It's just turning into wet puddles. I hate puddles.

probably better that i didn't tho!
envying you guys - I avoid this thread every time it's bumped due to: been off the running for years due to mysterious hard-to-diagnose yet excruciating soft tissue calf crap tbh, so i had no idea this was actually the ILX Running Jesus Christ My Calves Hurt thread ;-)
"oh just run through it"
(this was my normal MO for the first six months, with each run getting progressively shorter as serious pain came on sooner)
"oh you run on concrete you have shin splints!"
(but the pain is posterior, not anterior)
"oh you run up and down hills it may be a oh no stress fracture!"
(but the pain is in both legs equally)
"oh it's just your calves are tight"
(but my range of motion is like touch-your-shin-with-your-toes silly)
"oh you probably have 'adhesions' use this foam roller"
(OH GOD THE PAIN MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP)

have done this now, or i wouldn't have had the courage to open this thread tbh
he suspects my crazy-flat feet (though i've been running with them all my life) and sent me to a PT joint for custom orthotics (already rocking the superfeet). they actually weren't so sure and have been doing "trigger point therapy" which despite sounding like complete chiropracty to me seems to be working. at least when she works my calves over it hurts a lot less than it did a few weeks ago, and she claims she's not going any easier.
ran a test mile on a treadmill yesterday with no ill results other than it took 10 minutes because damn that mile after a couple years off is hard no matter how many fake miles you rack up on the elliptical. tomorrow: two miles on the treadmill.

glad to hear things may be improving. good luck tomorrow!
― Maria, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:24 (sixteen years ago)
lol these are like my longest posts in months. didn't mean to walk in and hog the thread or derail. mostly just sort of pleasurably envious of all y'all out there running.
― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 02:24 (sixteen years ago)
xpost thank you Maria!
ps i am tallish and you are definitely faster than me ;-)

Great run tonight. 20 degrees, 4 with wind chill. Yaktrax worked great in about 2" to 3" of snow. The only thing that sucked was my hands. My gloves are way too thin. Need new ones before I try that again.
― Jeff, Thursday, 10 December 2009 02:02 (sixteen years ago)
i ran slowly upon a quasi plowed road today
― Richard Snorkeling (ice cr?m), Thursday, 10 December 2009 02:03 (sixteen years ago)

― johnny crunch, Thursday, 10 December 2009 02:08 (sixteen years ago)
i just skipped it today, it was freezing rain. i'll try to make up for it tomorrow.
― Maria, Thursday, 10 December 2009 02:10 (sixteen years ago)
First run this morning after 12 days of flu. Nice to be back, but coughing like an old bastard now.
― The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 11 December 2009 09:23 (sixteen years ago)
how are the legs though?
i am going to try a 5K in the gym at lunchtime today, and a 'real' one in the park tomorrow.
― Dr.C, Friday, 11 December 2009 10:06 (sixteen years ago)
Legs were fine actually, it's the lungs that weren't too happy.
How many times a week are you up to now?
― The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 11 December 2009 10:15 (sixteen years ago)
I'm doing 2 5Ks in the gym and one or 2 outdoors. I will probably extend one of the outdoor runs to around 8-10K soon. The Saturday morning 5K race might stop on days when I play rugby - first game back is pencilled in for boxing day!
― Dr.C, Friday, 11 December 2009 11:05 (sixteen years ago)
Upping the distance a bit should make the shorter runs a lot easier. There's a regular Saturday 5k near me too, I should get along to that every now again for a bit of faster running, cos that's what I'm really missing in my training.
― The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 11 December 2009 11:46 (sixteen years ago)
all the 5ks around here are sunday mornings, so i usually pick church and go on afternoon run instead. i wish there were a saturday race!
― Maria, Friday, 11 December 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)
I have one this Sunday, a Rudolph Ramble. I think I have to wear antlers. Then off to Palo Alto and warmer weather for a few days. I hope to get in some runs there.
― Jeff, Friday, 11 December 2009 13:38 (sixteen years ago)
25.33 on the treadmill at lunchtime. I am mildly disappointed, cos I did the first 2K far too fast and was just hanging on from there. The last K was agony - not even watching the yummy-mummies' fitness class as I ran could make it fun.
Antlers wouldn't have helped either.
― Dr.C, Friday, 11 December 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)
i am curious about how long it would take me to feel 'ready' to do a 5k. i generally do 3-3.5 miles when i go out but i break it up into a mix of running and walking. i worry if i ran the whole thing i would not be able to walk afterwards!
― tehresa, Friday, 11 December 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)
People take walking breaks in 5k's all the time. It's no problem. Just don't line up at the front.
― Jeff, Friday, 11 December 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)
i feel like it would be cheating?
― tehresa, Friday, 11 December 2009 19:37 (sixteen years ago)
i don't think so.
― Maria, Friday, 11 December 2009 20:04 (sixteen years ago)
hmmmm there is a jingle bell thing sunday but i have a party sat night :(another one in a park on the 19th... maybe i'll shoot for it? i looked at some results times from their previous races and it seems like i would not stick out like a sore, slow thumb (altho the top time from their november race was 16:59 wtf! that's fast!!!).
― tehresa, Friday, 11 December 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)
There will always be a few freaks running scary fast times. You'll be fine in the pack if it's a decent sized event.
― The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 11 December 2009 20:10 (sixteen years ago)
i think it's not too huge but they start the runners, walkers, and relays, 5k and 10k, all at the same time, so it'd probably be easy to blend!
now to see if i can squeeze it all in and get home and showered before a work meeting at 1pm...
― tehresa, Friday, 11 December 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)
Well go fer it then! And good luck!
― The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 11 December 2009 20:32 (sixteen years ago)
ok i registered! this is exciting!!! 6 months ago i would have laughed in your face if you told me i'd be doing this on a december saturday morning!
― tehresa, Friday, 11 December 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)
yay! have fun!

Smart! I had a great run this morning too over the frosty fields to work. So still and calm, really beautiful. My breathing is a bit fucked though, cos I bust a couple of ribs at the veg patch on Saturday.
― We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)
I haven't run at all since I've been on business in Palo Alto. Working 12 hour plus days just isn't conducive to running. That's too bad because it's over 60 degrees and I wanted to run around and check out Stanford's campus.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 22:04 (sixteen years ago)
Next off to North Carolina to visit family for Xmas. I'm afraid if I run I'll either get hit by a car or shot by deer hunters.
hah! where in nc?i will be in sc, where they do not believe in sidewalks. my biggest fear is getting hit by a teenager driving a luxury suv.
