Enh, if I did get one it would be a buzz-around-town bike and not something to take a long ride on. But who knows? She'd definitely like it.

Maddie was talking about buying a gun the other day. I vetoed.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

and meat is certainly not the focus.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Greengold Acres Chicken Breast, new potatoes, crisp skin and wild honey 15

Holy shit it's chicken and potatoes! I'm trying to imagine who orders this. Like if grandpa gets dragged along and starts bitching about "What kind of restaurant IS this? I wanted steak! I didn't fight in two wars to eat sprouts!" etc., you can say, "Look! Chicken and potatoes." And he'll order it and hopefully shut up about what kind of goddamn fruity place is this.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, there's nothing over $15 -- are they small plates?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Really, though, there's no restaurant out side of KFC where you can order the chicken and justify it. The chef won't respect you.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Vegetables are cheap

xpost not true

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

From an older menu:

Rushing Waters Trout with Cauliflower Puree, Baby Leeks and fennel broth 13.00

Gunthorpe Farm Chicken Breast roasted fingerling potatoes, crisp skin and wild honey 15.00

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

their menu is a "tasting" menu, so they recommend that you pick a few things here & there to try. i think it's divided into sections, but i can't recall what they are. maybe it's something simple like 'cold' and 'hot.' anyway, small-ish plates, yes.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:42 (twenty years ago)

That makes more sense, then, Kels.

Kenan, what on earth are you talking about? What's wrong with ordering chicken? Are you saying it's too "common"?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:42 (twenty years ago)

So not true. I also don't care if the chef respects me. If I want to eat chicken, I'm eating chicken. I usually don't order something that I can make at home though. (No sandwiches, for instance, unless they're special burgers or something.)

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:42 (twenty years ago)

*Usually. But I don't go out to eat that much, so when I do, it better be good.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

john, for some reason i thought you went with your parents or RC or something.
green zebra can certainly add up quickly, but it's not mind-blowing expensive. i think i ate there with leaf & we had a smattering of things, i had a glass of wine & our bill was probably around $60 or so? this is assuming i'm remembering it correctly, which i may not be.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Las Tablas, K. Chicken so good, w/ plantain and yucca on the side.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Mmmmmm platanos.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Are you saying it's too "common"?

I'm saying it's... chicken.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Las Tablas, K. Chicken so good, w/ plantain and yucca on the side.

mmm. Ok, yeah. That I can see.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Nope, Kels. I couldn't go for RC because they weren't able to get a table until 9 or 9:30 and I'd already made plans for later that evening.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I've had fancy chicken at home that I would def. order out (say, stuff w/goat cheese & cranberries).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

stuffed

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm saying it's ... beef.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm saying it's ... duck.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

EZ, where's a cheap place to grab some dinner? i kinda want to take leaf out, but my income is limited. also, where in uptown? it has to be close enough to meet at.

p.s.: it's taters.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

It's ... tofu

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I have to get to court! (Jenny's mock trial)

But I just wanted to say that that is waaay cheaper than I expected.

Also, a pre-emptive FUCK YOU to all of you.

-J.

Have you been to the French Meadow, next door to the CC Club?

"I'm saying it's...chicken, ey?"

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I love that place. We've eaten there a small handful of times already.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Do you like Vietnamese, Kelsey?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Contrary, yet quietly OTM.

I love this phrase. And agree, for the most part.

I'm going to buy a motorcycle with a gun mounted on the front of it.

Also agreed.

(Oh, the Lotus, J.?) Is there still a Thai place in Calhoun Square?

A couple years ago, right after it opened, I ate at a place called Azia, on Nicollett near the Black Forest - so good. Weird combinations of curry and cranberries that actually worked well.

(I've said it too many times before, but pretty much my favorite critic of any type is Dara Moskowitz, who writes about food and wine for City Pages - and she writes the capsule reviews for their restaurant guide as well.)

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I do, Jordan!

and yes, that thai place is still in calhoun square. have you eaten at swadtee or whatever it is on hennepin? or galooney's pizza? both of those are close.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Here's a good sample of Dara M.'s writing: http://citypages.com/databank/26/1274/article13250.asp

If City Pages music writers can move on to Spin and the Village Voice, there's no reason Dara M. won't make a big leap someday too.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

sawatdee is supposed to be awesome. my parent's love it. Lotus is the vietnamese place, though, isn't it?

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I ate late-night at Azia once and there was a DRIVE-BY EGGING. Seriously, I was an inch from being straight nogged.

(this was just after bartime had been extended, and is yet another argument against outdoor seating)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

apparently she wrote for hermanaut as well. this is probably only significant to john, actually.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Eazy! I was just going to say that a friend took me to...some Vietnamese place that was good and cheap, but I think Lotus is correct.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

QUE ES MAS MACHO? PINEAPPLE O KNIFE?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm saying it's ... beef.

The cliche about that generic flesh taste is not "tastes like beef." Chicken is pretty flavorless meat by itself, just some protein, not enough fat or dark meat or anything to make it really *delicious*. It's chicken. You have to deep fry it or (yeah) stuff it with goat cheese or something. If meat was bread, chicken would be crackers.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (kenan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

The Lotus is the one that's attached to Calhoun Square on the Hennpin side. I don't know that I've been to Sawatdee, but my pa (who was in Thailand with the Peace Corps for a few years) loves it.

So many places to choose from, Kels!

xpost- Chicken is my favorite food, bar none.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

FAVORITE MINNEAPOLIS PLACES TO EAT in my limited experience:

--Maria's Cafe

--Lotus

--that Mexican place way out somewhere with the salsa bar and 13 kinds of meat

--that convenience store with the food counter that serves late-night gyros (maybe that was Ali Baba?)

--Falafel King

--Triple Rock

--Galactic Pizza even though I haven't actually had it yet

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Moskowitz on anorexia:

Yeah, I know that we're all supposed to feel really bad for anorexics. After all, they're just vulnerable innocents thumbing through Vogue, clicking past the Daily Burn, when suddenly corporate capitalism -- with its slimy strategies of exploiting never-fulfillable consumer desire -- forces them to starve themselves to incapacity or death. Now hear this: If you're going to kill or thoroughly disable yourself because your ass is bigger than Kate Moss's or your arms are flabbier than Naomi Campbell's, you are a moron no more deserving of social pity than snowmobilers who drive drunk into trees.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the nod to galactice, J! it's funny, i've only eaten there once since i moved here.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Oy, JMZ, don't put pictures of Jess in this thread, I'll never go home. DELICIOUS EYEBROWS OF EVIL.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

galactice = galactic, obviously. tater had a typo.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:12 (twenty years ago)

hyde park records (colonel), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Pizza Luce
Bryant/Lake Bowl

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)
