these new privacy settings have made facebook way more open. great that I can now nosy on high school people I used to know without having to actually friend them, but am pretty sure most people don't realise how open the new default settings are (all yr profile pics, for one), or there'd be a monster fucking uproar
― stet, Sunday, 13 December 2009 03:44 (sixteen years ago)
As disingenuous as FB's privacy notices seem, so much of the problem could be cleared up if the "What can the average person see about my profile?" feature wasn't buried. People, by nature of only seeing their own profile when logged into the site, don't know what's visible and what's private.
― Cunga, Sunday, 13 December 2009 04:06 (sixteen years ago)
Browsing the pictures of people I went to school with, I could only do it for about a minute. If I kept going this was going to turn into a melancholic Saturday Night were I play some Red House Painters. Thanks for the heads up, though.
― Cunga, Sunday, 13 December 2009 05:25 (sixteen years ago)
First thing I did when the popup about priv changes appeared was go into every setting I could find and check they all made sense. Nothing got changed for me as my stuff was already locked down and it respected that, though I did lock down my pics more than I'd done before.
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 13 December 2009 06:51 (sixteen years ago)
I thought i had done that too, but went and checked tonight and my profile pictures were set to "friends of friends" (which is pretty wide open). Had to dig into photo albums permissions to find that.
― stet, Sunday, 13 December 2009 06:53 (sixteen years ago)
My relatives can be extra annoying on FB.
My status message: something like "OMFG I can't stop listening to Orbital 2! So classic!"A distant relative, first reply: "So I guess you heard Aunt Jan died."
― kenan, Sunday, 13 December 2009 21:24 (sixteen years ago)
That's hilarious actually.

It's a great album. I will carry it in my heart always. Uncle Jim, too. I guess.

I take it he was cremated?
― sarahel, Sunday, 13 December 2009 21:55 (sixteen years ago)
I've changed my settings so that most of the relatives I have on FB (which is limited as it is) dont see my status updates anymore. Mum will be miffed when she works it out, but whatever. My brother can still see 'em but he's not likely to email me "OMG ARE YOU OK!?" 3 seconds after I post "ow I stubbed my toe" like my mother is >:|

holy shit that's horrible AND hilarious, it can't be yet has to be real too wtf.
okay i posted this on noize but wanted to run this by a bigger group to see if this is happening to anyone else....
this is weird:
this chick i was dating a couple years ago just showed up in my feed. back story: we dated a few months, i broke it off, she got pissed, she deleted me from her friends list a while back (i noticed sometime ~1-2 years ago). neither she nor i have ever requested to be FB friends again after this.
and now out of the blue, she's on the top of my feed. i click on her profile to see if she's tried to add me as a friend or if i'd inadvertently clicked hers when looking at our mutual friends' profile (the couple who set us up just had a baby) but no, no pending friendship request.
is this a new feature or something? "People You Used To Be Friends With!"
addendum: she's still FB friends with jaxon even though they met *once*, when we all went to see Herc+Love Affair & Danny Wang. also, still FB friends with my friend in London who we went out to dinner with once.
― ┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 02:34 (sixteen years ago)
I think it's probably because she's connected to two of your friends but that's just a guess.
Had a conversation the other day with a friend about deletion v. hiding ppl. I just hide someone if I don't want to see their feed but he deletes. I don't really see the point of deleting if you can hide - it sort of seems unecessarily mean.
― ★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 02:38 (sixteen years ago)
something similar happened to me: i noticed an old highschool friend i never talk to was no longer on my friends list, and then months later she reappeared, but she didn't re-request friendship or anything.
― DAN P3RRY MAD AT GRANDMA (just1n3), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 02:41 (sixteen years ago)
it's got to be more than that because there are 100s-1000s of people that are connected to two of my friends that never show up in my feed. it's just weird. she deleted me, and no word for 1-2 years until one day she shows up in my feed (XG is a fan of So You Think You Can Dance!) despite her profile being set to private and no direct connection between us. strange!
what just1n3 is describing is some people deactivate their account and then when you reactivate it all your connections are restored to when you left. my guess.
but her profile was active this whole time (she showed up on my "People You May Know" at least 5-6 times in the past 1-2 years).
― ┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 02:50 (sixteen years ago)
OK yeah, that is a little weird. I don't know!

My favorite take on social networking is still Christine Rosen's article on the subject:
http://www.thenewatlantis.com/publications/virtual-friendship-and-the-new-narcissism
Humorous take on hiding v. deleting people here:
The structure of social networking sites also encourages the bureaucratization of friendship. Each site has its own terminology, but among the words that users employ most often is “managing.” The Pew survey mentioned earlier found that “teens say social networking sites help them manage their friendships.” There is something Orwellian about the management-speak on social networking sites: “Change My Top Friends,” “View All of My Friends” and, for those times when our inner Stalins sense the need for a virtual purge, “Edit Friends.” With a few mouse clicks one can elevate or downgrade (or entirely eliminate) a relationship.

hate articles like that
― jabba hands, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 06:52 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah that article is about 7000 times more Orwellian than Facebook.
― kenan, Wednesday, 23 December 2009 07:48 (sixteen years ago)
I'd much rather read an Orwell essay on what the word "Orwellian" has come to mean than what this narcissist has to say about narcissism.

that is one of the situations where GBH is at least partially excusable. whichever 'friend' did that has kinda crossed the line at which humans do not deserve physical violence [/j0rdan s4rgent]
