"Oh, that's pretty."

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Can we have a roll call? I'm new and I sometimes forget who's who.
Who is Shiny Maroon?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Kenan.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I think I've now got to write a song called Paunchy Moon.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Do you need a harmonica flourish in it?

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

See, I have this cop that's maroon colored and sparkly, and when the sun shines through it, it's very shiny. And very maroon.

Also, a Bugs Bunny tribute.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

CUP. I have this cup.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Ohmygod, kelsey. Nick and I saw an awesome harmonica at Br0adway Antiques Market. I mean, in case you're hankering for a really old harmonica in a huge box. :-D

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

HI, Jesse. I'm SARAH.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Btw, I don't suppose anyone knows who this is? They randomly added my band on myspace and I'm just curious.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

We still need a session with your harp, Kelsey.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

we do!!

although i would probably love that old harmonica . . . was it a chromatic, by chance? the big ones w/ the button? . . . I feel skeezy about blowing on a harp that had someone else's mouth all over it.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Can you boil a harmonica?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

memphis kicks ass. i applied for a job there back in october but didn't get it. it's the only city i'd leave chicago for right now.

record stores: GONER RECORDS!!!! 2152 young ave. (cooper & young) my favorite record store anywhere, ever. eric and zac are the two dudes who run the place. tell them chicago kevin sent you. it won't get you a break on the price or anything but you can ask them about any good shows that are happening that weekend and they'll know.
shangri-la is also a great record store but i could seriously blow an entire paycheck at goner and not get half of what i want.

as far as clubs go the hi-tone is my favorite. decent sized room (maybe a scosh bigger than the bottle) that gets a ton of good bands. also probably the best place to see a decent garage/punk show. the buccaneer lounge gets good mostly local bands but luckily memphis has an amazing local music scene. the buc is like someone's parents rec room bar with the wood paneling and fireplace. my friend lisa said when she played there in january of 2005 they had a fire going in the fireplace which was kind of nice until she got behind her drum kit which was about 2 feet in front of the fire. she said she almost passed out from dehydration mid-set. the young avenue deli gets a lot of good shows and is a HUGE place but the sound absolutely blows. good place to grab a drink and a meal however. the only other place i can think of is murphy's which has some good shows but has lost out on a lot to the buc. there's some bad blood between the two places with lawsuits and whatnot. oh, there's also a vietnamese place called Pho Hoa Binh where chuck vicious books punk shows. good food too, especially if you're travelling with vegetarians/vegans.

have a good time, if i hear of any good shows i'll let you know.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Jesse, go to settings and turn on "show log-in names" or whatever. And turn on "show only the last 50 messages" while you're at it. Your ILX life will be that much sweeter for your trouble.

The "Settings" link is down there at the bottom of the page.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I think you shouldn't boil a harmonica. The harmonica is "seasoned" by the germs on it. Harmonicas that sound best are usually those that have been played by heroin addicts who have shared needles and have not brushed their teeth in weeks. The hepatitises (A, B and C)and the TB mellow the tonal output and provide a surface that allows the user to glide his or her mouth on the instrument.

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Gross.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Not gross:

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

B. is trying to tempt me to stay another day through the lure of experimental film.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:28 (twenty years ago)

haha "hepatitises"

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Soon I leave this city and get on a train for two days.

I just took the train to and from NYC. Necessary things: a pile of books and magazines, headphones, whiskey. All set.

I love the train. I caught up on so much reading!

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Eazy, did you go see those shorts last night?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

The train to Portland is so much nicer than the train from Chicago to NYC. It's less crowded and more pleasant and has better scenery.

I read four whole books on the way over here, and I might beat that on the way back. I certainly spent enough time in bookstores buying books on this trip! Just ask Jesse!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

But I think I am going to stick around for the movie (Michael Snow's "Wavelength", which I've always wanted to see), so. A Chicagoan for one further day, I am.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

What a carefree life you lead.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I was just thinking that same thing - how do you manage to be so leisurely?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Zombie movies and old-timey country music: who ARE you people?

I have been to Memphis, but it was nearly nine years ago and I don't remember much except for Graceland and the place where MLK got shot and some pretty good BBQ.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:41 (twenty years ago)

See the movie Dead & Breakfast. It has zombies AND (hilarious) country music. And Jeremy Sisto and Portia di Rossi.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I'm there.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I missed the shorts last night, Jordan. I "spun" last night for the first time instead. So there's your trifecta, John - Zombie movies, old-time country music, and Spinning (tm).

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh, you mean like DJ'd? I think I'm going to DJ upstairs after the final Practice Space show.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Isn't "spinning" just, like, riding a stationary bike?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:46 (twenty years ago)

WITH A BLACKLIGHT AND TECHNO MUSIC AND AN INSTRUCTOR TELLING LONG PERSONAL ANECDOTES.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm unemployed (doing some occasional freelance work) and idling before going back to school next month.

Or, to put it another way, I overvalue such freedom, and sacrefice some things that most people value in order to better be able to take advantage of freedom (although this will probably stop once I'm in school).

Or, to answer another way, Amtrak tickets aren't like plane tickets, and they don't get more expensive if you buy them day of.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) Whoa.

Wait, I still don't get if you were DJ'ing or riding a bike.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

There were records on the bike wheels, with a needle nearby, and he had to keep them spinning.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Now I'm getting the impression that it's just a classroom screening of this film, which means PROJECTED VIDEO and I am not sticking around for that!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

(xp) That sounds like a game for the Atari 2600.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

From http://www.cegep-chicoutimi.qc.ca/cap/spinning.htm
Imaginez-vous dans une salle où la lumière est tamisée, vous êtes assis confortablement sur un vélo très spécial qui porte le nom de Spinner. Une musique douce et entraînante bat le rythme, tout le groupe pédale au tempo de la musique.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

spinning is like riding a stationary bike in some regard, but more intense. you're often encouraged to don cycling shoes.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

(xp) That sounds like a game for the Atari 2600.

Or something akin to this:

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

You're shoes are actually strapped into the pedals.

It didn't feel too intense while I was doing it, but afterwards I could barely walk, in a good way.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Hi, my name is Don Cyclingshoes.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Spinning sounds like it would be a good activity for me.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

That's what she said.

xpost.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Dirty boy.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:55 (twenty years ago)

I have been to Memphis...some pretty good BBQ.

payne's!!! i'm making homer simpson desireous of delishness noises just thinking about it.

i did some poking around on shows and you're going the one weekend where there's no one i'd like to see playing. your tastes may vary. but go by goner and ask eric or zac if there are any good shows anywhere if you're up for that kind of thing. i sometimes forget that other people check out things other than dingy clubs when they travel.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:55 (twenty years ago)

deliciousness. thoughts of payne's clouded my brain.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Now you have me thinking of the spicy chopped beef at Ruby's in Austin. oooh. I lived on those.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Spinning sounds terrifying, like it would make my heart explode! Yikes. I haven't been to the geem for a long time.

xpost - I long for that sort of freedom, C. I really really really do. I'm putting in hard time now so when Dan is famous and we're rich, we can take all sorts of train trips. ALL SORTS! Hello Empire Builder! Hello musky Amish people! Hello funny little bunk beds! I love the train.
