yeah most of the fast people in hs i remember were pretty tiny
― harbl, Friday, 4 December 2009 03:10 (sixteen years ago)
tall people are heavy
well n/m I take it all back
― crazy farting throwback jersey (gbx), Friday, 4 December 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)
not disagreeing though, it has to be a combination of things! like relatively long legs for your height has to help but there is a point at which you are carrying too much i bet
― harbl, Friday, 4 December 2009 03:14 (sixteen years ago)
I guess that it is long legged ppl are faster not tallies
― crazy farting throwback jersey (gbx), Friday, 4 December 2009 03:15 (sixteen years ago)
Interesting! The same person who mentioned that I have a runners build said that I have long legs but a shortish stride (when running, not walking)and should try and increase it. Also I am trying to build up to 195lbs (my former weight) or thereabouts within 2-3 months, so it will be interesting to see what effect that has on my running.
Tehresa - I am hugely jealous of anyone who can swim WELL! I can swim for ages, but I am unbelievably slow and inefficient in the water. I really need some lessons.
― Dr.C, Friday, 4 December 2009 10:37 (sixteen years ago)
yeah my gf is a great swimmer; I am woeful. if we go swimming it's basically just 1hr of me partially drowning and her lolling at me ;_;
― SKATAAAAAAAAAAA (cozwn), Friday, 4 December 2009 10:40 (sixteen years ago)
I've heard that shorter people tend to be better runners because generally lower weight and lower center of gravity = more efficient movement, but given the trouble I sometimes have keeping up with taller people who are only walking quickly, I think stride length has to be a contributing factor to speed so height HAS to be helpful. Honestly I bet tall skinny people have it best.
― Maria, Friday, 4 December 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)
the trouble I sometimes have keeping up with taller people who are only walking quicklytell me about it! i'm a fast walker and still STILL! i have to tell people that i can't keep up with them because i'm a hobbit. it kind of irritates me actually. notice that i can't keep up and slow down so that i don't have to break into a trot in order to talk with you.
also: Honestly I bet tall skinny people have it best.don't they ALWAYS.
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Friday, 4 December 2009 15:01 (sixteen years ago)
haha, good point.
― Maria, Friday, 4 December 2009 15:02 (sixteen years ago)
haha yeah u people are always asking me why i'm walking fast but i'm not walking fast i'm walking normal :(
― harbl, Friday, 4 December 2009 15:10 (sixteen years ago)
I got a hydration belt. One of the Nathan ones with 4 bottles. +2 for my running dork level.
― Jeff, Friday, 4 December 2009 18:11 (sixteen years ago)
I'm back! 10.4 miles today. And all of the below freezing.
― Jeff, Saturday, 5 December 2009 22:55 (sixteen years ago)
Well done. I did 8 today round prospect park. Cold, rainy and difficult. But my calf feels fully repaired! Jeff, do you feel like you need liquids in winter?
― paulhw, Saturday, 5 December 2009 23:11 (sixteen years ago)
I feel like I need to drink liquids frequently while running. I like to sip every couple of miles. Today was the first day I ran with my belt and it was really nice. At first I was worried that it was two heavy, but I forgot I was wearing it after a couple of minutes. I still look like a dork with it on. A well hydrated dork.
― Jeff, Saturday, 5 December 2009 23:24 (sixteen years ago)
Great work Paul and Jeff!
I did the 5K again on Saturday - 25'58'' this time!
― Dr.C, Sunday, 6 December 2009 11:22 (sixteen years ago)
Forecast is calling for snow most of the week. This should be challenging.
― Jeff, Monday, 7 December 2009 14:08 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, yesterday was my first day running on iced-over sidewalks. definitely not my best day for speed, but hey, not dead yet!
― Maria, Monday, 7 December 2009 14:23 (sixteen years ago)
I woke up this morning and there was snow everywhere, so I went to the gym, but this is going to disappoint my dog greatly. I'm kind of afraid (ok genuinely afraid) of running on ice/snow -- is it safe? Will I have to buy expensive gear in order to make it safe? If so, I'll just change my routine and go to the gym. Unfortunately, the gym will not permit my dog to accompany me ;_;

Running on icy pavements is horrible! That dog is fantastic though.
― The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Monday, 7 December 2009 14:46 (sixteen years ago)
note: for his dignity's sake, i must add that he doesn't usually wear a scarf, nor is he the sort of dog who dresses upthis was a one-off event
― figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 7 December 2009 14:49 (sixteen years ago)
It's cool, he looks like a canine Keith Richards.
― The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Monday, 7 December 2009 15:04 (sixteen years ago)
Running on snow is pretty safe, running on ice is kind of scary. I hear Yak Trax are helpful for that but I don't own them so don't know. Someone recently told me that when sidewalks are iced over and streets aren't very safe either, the roads near schools (or churches, when schools are on break) are your best bets because they're most likely to be safely plowed & shoveled, so I'll be checking that out for myself this winter.
Your dog is so cute! Best to not make him sad!
― Maria, Monday, 7 December 2009 15:34 (sixteen years ago)
tht dog is gorgeous. jealous
running on pavements carpeted in wet leaves is also horrible : /
― SKATAAAAAAAAAAA (webinar), Monday, 7 December 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)
Fresh snow is fine, fun even. Iced up snow is horrible. much like ice. in most places through snow will be cleared pretty quickly?
― paulhw, Monday, 7 December 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)
Not on the sidewalks in Chicago. It's up to the property owners to do that, so it can really vary block by block. I swear some of them just spray water on the sidewalk so it just ices over.
I think I'm going to try some yaktrax. As if I don't have enough gear to worry about already.
― Jeff, Monday, 7 December 2009 21:27 (sixteen years ago)
yeah a lot of places seem to be like that. snow never gets shoveled (esp in neighborhoods where there is less owner-occupied housing) so it just melts a little, then freezes. might be better just to run in the street. last winter i did run on it some and it was better than i expected only because i was doing more of a slow march, which allowed me to run farther than i normally could :)
― harbl, Monday, 7 December 2009 21:41 (sixteen years ago)
just ran 5 through the falling snow along a northern vermont riverscape :))
― ice cr?m, Monday, 7 December 2009 21:55 (sixteen years ago)
I wonder if I can wear my tingley rubbers on my running shoes.
― Jeff, Monday, 7 December 2009 23:27 (sixteen years ago)
running shoes can't get pregnant iirc but i suppose enhanced pleasure is always a +

btw my friend is a thin sole advocate and has those barefoot vibrams but she said the first time she ran in them she killed her shins.
― tehresa, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 01:10 (sixteen years ago)
I got a cast of my feet and had custom insoles made. They're awesome.
I am not a thin sole advocate. I want my feet to be as rigid as tanks.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 01:45 (sixteen years ago)
3 miles tonight, half in the snow, half on a paved path. Not too bad.
you can't wear socks in those things, it just occurred to me. or maybe they have to be toe socks?
― harbl, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 01:59 (sixteen years ago)
jeff, if you get yaktrax please report back!
― Maria, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 03:10 (sixteen years ago)
i finally forced myself to stop wimping out and went running again after almost 2.5 weeks off (sick for a week, then elliptical for a week) and it felt great but i went reallllly slowly and it was 30º so my nose was running the whole time lol.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 00:46 (sixteen years ago)
^^^ i need to do this. i've been benched for a while now :-/
― being being kiss-ass fake nice (gbx), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 00:49 (sixteen years ago)
Welcome back!
I was going to run in the snow tonight, but it isn't sticking yet. It's just turning into wet puddles. I hate puddles.

probably better that i didn't tho!
envying you guys - I avoid this thread every time it's bumped due to: been off the running for years due to mysterious hard-to-diagnose yet excruciating soft tissue calf crap tbh, so i had no idea this was actually the ILX Running Jesus Christ My Calves Hurt thread ;-)
"oh just run through it"
(this was my normal MO for the first six months, with each run getting progressively shorter as serious pain came on sooner)
"oh you run on concrete you have shin splints!"
(but the pain is posterior, not anterior)
"oh you run up and down hills it may be a oh no stress fracture!"
(but the pain is in both legs equally)
"oh it's just your calves are tight"
(but my range of motion is like touch-your-shin-with-your-toes silly)
"oh you probably have 'adhesions' use this foam roller"
(OH GOD THE PAIN MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP)
