You work from the lightest ink to the darkest I recall, so: YMCK.

Although looking at a print book I have, it claims CMYK is the most common order. We need someone with more experience on the print side of things for clarity

joygoat, that is awesome!

mascara and ties (Abbott), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 20:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks everyone.

Yeah, the black is on top and the yellow is on the bottom, don't remember where C and M are - I tested it on scrap pieces first and put them in different orders and went with the one that I thought looked better.

I know you could do this on transparencies too, I've seen four color images on acetate or mylar but don't remember what they get used for - I know very little about commercial printing. I wanted some distance between the layers so it looks more 3-D and floaty looking.

I started off pouring layers of resin, letting it dry, printing a layer, pouring more resin, etc. But it took ages for it to cure solidly enough to be printed on. I might do a simpler two-color version this way, so it's color floating in a solid block of plastic.

Damn, I want this threat to keep going, it's awesome. Well, I might as well put some kind of shit up to help it out...

I'm no artist, but I do doodle weird stuff in notebooks sometimes just for the heck of it, usually during classes. Recently I'm working on basic concept ideas for various critters in a series of novels.

If I had any real ability, I'd really go nuts with drawing.

Nice work, really liked yr pencil alien too. Is that acrylic?

ledge, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 10:18 (twelve years ago) link

yeah acrylic, I've used them for years but still struggle with them. I think it pays to buy decent quality ones tbh.

PSOD (Ste), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 11:20 (twelve years ago) link

whoa that's neat. Nice and bold. Reminds me i need more dark in my pencil stuff.

i tried oils once, but i was pretty young and didn't know how the hell to use them. just got a mess everywhere and put me off, went back to watercolours.
But loving acrylics now, when i'm not pencilling.

Don't be feared of the messiness of oils, get stuck in with them.

yeah, maybe it's the photo but yr sketches look very H. get in there with the high Bs!

ledge, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 14:53 (twelve years ago) link

the alien on the other thread is very H, but that one above is a lot darker than the crappy galaxy camera is showing.

i go to bed with high Bs! and sketch till i get tired.

(Have to admit that last one, the levels were auto corrected and colours have gone ever so slightly more 'colourful', but it's not far off)

Yowza! Was that last one painted (or initially sketched) on location?

ledge, Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:13 (nine years ago) link

It's painted from a photo I found online, unfortunately.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:15 (nine years ago) link

Never mind! Drawing or painting from life is great if you get the chance but nothing wrong with using photos.

ledge, Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:18 (nine years ago) link

How did the oil painting go?

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:19 (nine years ago) link

Ah the course two years ago? Went ok but stalled afterwards, doing another portrait course now and getting into it more, hopefully will keep it up after the course finishes. Here's my piece from the last session:

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7473/15522143749_5005786d2c_b.jpg

And a couple of watercolour sketches of Venice, one on location and one from a photo after I got back. More illustrative, I didn't pluck up the courage to throw away the pen and just rely on tone & colour.
