I don't know?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I sure don't know either.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

(stewing) Amanda we need to make a movie called "Showdown at Wormtown".

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying this weird "blunt honesty" thing in my relationship. It's rough going but kind of refreshing.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Random interjection: is there anything better than Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys?

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Especially the really old, scratchy recordings that reming me of Django and Stephan.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

NO! There's nothing better. I love that lady that says "yeeees, yes" at random moments. I also like Spade Cooley a lot.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

There needn't be anything better than them. They suffice.

Soon I leave this city and get on a train for two days. That would require getting out of bed, though. And packing.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Good morning, Chicago! I feel like a thousand bucks. I slept! All night! My house is full of food, and I have plenty of work to do! I see my therapist today! Everything is good.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard them, but the other drummer in Digd0wn plays in a Texas swing band here. They're pretty good (Kev1n Tubb and the Lon3ly St4rs).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Yay!

Who here has been to memphis. I think otto has? Amirite? I just wanted to get some tips on fun record stores/ thrift shops/ boutiques/ clubs/ whathaveyou for when I visit my mom this weekend.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I get a kick out of how much my grandparents loved Bob Wills, how my parents listened to crap country music, and now I love Bob Wills. It skips a generation.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I've been to Memphis! Once when I was a kidlet and once for four days about eight years ago. I don't know where anything is, though.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

(amanda I g-mailed you) I love Django so much. I have a recording of a contemporary Romany artist playing "Dark Eyes" Django-style and it's one of my favorite things ever.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:38 (twenty years ago)

"Lips so sweet and tender / Like petals falling apart."

That's quite lovely.

I've been to Memphis! And San Antone. And I loved a woman... oh crap, now I have to listen to Lyle Lovett.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I have a recording of a contemporary Romany artist playing "Dark Eyes" Django-style and it's one of my favorite things ever.

Do you happen to have it in a format that you can gmail to me?

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

No love for Spade Cooley - he had a great story. He killed his wife and then was in jail. He got out for one last show and died backstage right after the show. He coined the term "Western swing"! He ruled.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Killing your wife: not cool. But it's a good story.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

If'n I ever leave Chicago, Memphis is high on my list of places to go next. New York is too much for me, and I like barbecue.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I just asked my friend who lives in TN if he knows of anything to do in Memphis. I was there once, but as a wee lad.

Kenan, that kind of sounds like the begninning of a blues song.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:47 (twenty years ago)

No, there's nothing better than Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys.

There's a 4-CD western swing compilation called Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys: The Golden Years of Western Swing. It's only 25 bucks for a zillion great songs. There's one called "Pussy Pussy Pussy" that has a group of lads singing in order to coax an old lady's cat out of a tree.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

I love that lady that says "yeeees, yes" at random moments.

I missed this the first time. That's not a lady, that's Bob Wills! Tommy Duncan is the main vocalist. Bob is the arranger and main songwriter, and is always around going "Play it boys!" and etc.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Are you sure there's not a lady? Wow. Well, I love that little "yeeees, yes."

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Not a lady. It's the Duke Ellington of country music!

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I like it when I say something totally random, and you all come along with me. That pleases me.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

"Oh, that's pretty."

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Can we have a roll call? I'm new and I sometimes forget who's who.
Who is Shiny Maroon?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Kenan.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I think I've now got to write a song called Paunchy Moon.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Do you need a harmonica flourish in it?

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

See, I have this cop that's maroon colored and sparkly, and when the sun shines through it, it's very shiny. And very maroon.

Also, a Bugs Bunny tribute.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

CUP. I have this cup.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Ohmygod, kelsey. Nick and I saw an awesome harmonica at Br0adway Antiques Market. I mean, in case you're hankering for a really old harmonica in a huge box. :-D

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

HI, Jesse. I'm SARAH.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Btw, I don't suppose anyone knows who this is? They randomly added my band on myspace and I'm just curious.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

We still need a session with your harp, Kelsey.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

we do!!

although i would probably love that old harmonica . . . was it a chromatic, by chance? the big ones w/ the button? . . . I feel skeezy about blowing on a harp that had someone else's mouth all over it.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Can you boil a harmonica?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

memphis kicks ass. i applied for a job there back in october but didn't get it. it's the only city i'd leave chicago for right now.

record stores: GONER RECORDS!!!! 2152 young ave. (cooper & young) my favorite record store anywhere, ever. eric and zac are the two dudes who run the place. tell them chicago kevin sent you. it won't get you a break on the price or anything but you can ask them about any good shows that are happening that weekend and they'll know.
shangri-la is also a great record store but i could seriously blow an entire paycheck at goner and not get half of what i want.

as far as clubs go the hi-tone is my favorite. decent sized room (maybe a scosh bigger than the bottle) that gets a ton of good bands. also probably the best place to see a decent garage/punk show. the buccaneer lounge gets good mostly local bands but luckily memphis has an amazing local music scene. the buc is like someone's parents rec room bar with the wood paneling and fireplace. my friend lisa said when she played there in january of 2005 they had a fire going in the fireplace which was kind of nice until she got behind her drum kit which was about 2 feet in front of the fire. she said she almost passed out from dehydration mid-set. the young avenue deli gets a lot of good shows and is a HUGE place but the sound absolutely blows. good place to grab a drink and a meal however. the only other place i can think of is murphy's which has some good shows but has lost out on a lot to the buc. there's some bad blood between the two places with lawsuits and whatnot. oh, there's also a vietnamese place called Pho Hoa Binh where chuck vicious books punk shows. good food too, especially if you're travelling with vegetarians/vegans.

have a good time, if i hear of any good shows i'll let you know.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Jesse, go to settings and turn on "show log-in names" or whatever. And turn on "show only the last 50 messages" while you're at it. Your ILX life will be that much sweeter for your trouble.

The "Settings" link is down there at the bottom of the page.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I think you shouldn't boil a harmonica. The harmonica is "seasoned" by the germs on it. Harmonicas that sound best are usually those that have been played by heroin addicts who have shared needles and have not brushed their teeth in weeks. The hepatitises (A, B and C)and the TB mellow the tonal output and provide a surface that allows the user to glide his or her mouth on the instrument.

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Gross.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Not gross:

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

B. is trying to tempt me to stay another day through the lure of experimental film.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:28 (twenty years ago)

haha "hepatitises"

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Soon I leave this city and get on a train for two days.

I just took the train to and from NYC. Necessary things: a pile of books and magazines, headphones, whiskey. All set.

I love the train. I caught up on so much reading!

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Eazy, did you go see those shorts last night?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

The train to Portland is so much nicer than the train from Chicago to NYC. It's less crowded and more pleasant and has better scenery.

I read four whole books on the way over here, and I might beat that on the way back. I certainly spent enough time in bookstores buying books on this trip! Just ask Jesse!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

But I think I am going to stick around for the movie (Michael Snow's "Wavelength", which I've always wanted to see), so. A Chicagoan for one further day, I am.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

What a carefree life you lead.
