killer apps but lots of bugs. some apps crash and just go straight to the home screen like AIM) and some crash the phone, causing immediate reboot. lack of the wall in the facebook app is actually KILLER WIN because i can now actually, like, keep track of my friends instead of all this Poking and shit. I would've liked that Google app if it had a Reader & gTalk but, and while it links you to webapps that are pretty damn serviceable, it's doesn't have quite the functionality of a proper app. super monkey ball is helllllllla fun and hard as well. i tried buying that crazy synthesizer but am having problems downloading it. might be the coolest thing on there though...

So I got the PhoneSaber thing. And yeah, I like it.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 13 July 2008 06:41 (seventeen years ago)

White iphone looks silly because it's white on the back and black on the front. This is why I've gone for a black in 16gB (raincheck).

Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 13 July 2008 06:54 (seventeen years ago)

Me too. I had MacSaber on my Macbook anyway, so my journey to the nerd side is now complete.

The WeatherBug app blows the iPhone's built-in Weather app out of the water. Full current weather and forecast info on one screen, up-to-date radar on another, and local weather webcams on a third. Outstanding.

Pancakes Hackman, Sunday, 13 July 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

so do i need to take my phone into the apple store to get it upgraded to the 2.0 software?

homosexual II, Sunday, 13 July 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

Oh god no. You can update it through iTunes.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 13 July 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

pp and i are having fun with Shazam like "quick, turn on MTV...WOW! Okay let me turn on the radio...WOAH! Okay lets see if it knows what my ringtone is...OMG!"

sunny successor, Sunday, 13 July 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

and yeah the weather thing rules.

sunny successor, Sunday, 13 July 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

okay how come my itunes is being fucking lame and when i plug in my iphone it says NO UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE?

homosexual II, Sunday, 13 July 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

Anyone with a loft bed is going to LOVE the iTunes remote app. I've been using it to change music while reading in bed without getting up.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 13 July 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

hm. Jules' MacBook just has a remote control.

kenan, Sunday, 13 July 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

Trying to Whrrl my neighborhood in Somerville and getting Medford = uh thx for that but I wanted over here...

Ha, what neighborhood in Somerville do you live?

Allen, Sunday, 13 July 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

Just to reiterate what others have said. Remote is AMAZING

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 13 July 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 13 July 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

(nb: i'm keeping it old-skool with 1.whatever. DELAYED GRATIFICATION, yo. and nowhere near enough time to actually play with this shit. tomorrow morning i intend to get up at sparrow-fart and GEEK THE FUCK OUT.)

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, what neighborhood in Somerville do you live?

Winter Hill. It actually has all of the takeout/sandwich shops on Boradway in its database but no one's reviewed any of them yet.

HI DERE, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

You have a mission, then.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

Actually you could also individually review every Dunkin Donuts in the Boston area.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

uh no, I am not dying to have a size 68 waist

HI DERE, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:37 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sure there's an iPhone app that will help you lose that weight.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 13 July 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

ON IPHONE

Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

on a related note I used my iPhone + Yelp to find delicious tacos`

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 13 July 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

Sunny, if you love shazam you should try midomi. You can just HUM to it and it works the song out!

Just realised that if I dig out my ipod AV cable, and plug my iphone into the telly with it, then via safari, I can do bbc iplayer without my PC. Wow.

Weatherbug is much less cool if you're outside the US, sadly.

And am I just being dense with Remote? When I open it on the phone, it gives me a passcode. But I don't know how or where to put that into itunes. Anyone?

JimD, Monday, 14 July 2008 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

Oh wait, just figured out remote.

JimD, Monday, 14 July 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

Think I'm going to buy StarMap

This is good idea!

I just had to reinstall three apps because they started refusing to launch, saying "This application cannot be launched" or similar. It's an authentication problem, apparently. Grr.

stet, Monday, 14 July 2008 01:42 (seventeen years ago)

Funny. I'm currently in Davis, FAP soon? For iPhone app purposes of course.

Allen, Monday, 14 July 2008 02:09 (seventeen years ago)

well: the upgrade has seemingly bricked my phone spectacularly. iTunes refused to complete the upgrade with some bizarre and pointless "this phone cannot be upgraded" error and now sits there saying "waiting for iPhone" when i try again ...

... oh, woo, it's moved back to "preparing software for restore".

tits.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 14 July 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

iToner = A+ already

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 14 July 2008 10:05 (seventeen years ago)

second time also unlucky. fuck me, this is annoying. not got time to go to the apple store today, either. wonderful: that's me without a phone for at least 24 hours :(

grimly fiendish, Monday, 14 July 2008 10:18 (seventeen years ago)

third time luckier, i think. it's "restoring music and videos" as i (angrily) type. more importantly, it seems to be back on the O2 network and i'm getting texts. hurrah: i have a phone again.

yet another bout of apple-installer-related misery, then. what i ended up doing was deleting the 2.0 .ipsw file (and the previous one) from my library, reconnecting the phone in restore mode, letting it download the update *again* and install it ... touch wood, that seems to have worked.

quite why it couldn't have worked the first time is a moot point.

Okay, I downloaded Midomi and "sang" Bring The Noize, Public Enemy style, all the way from Bass! to Terminator X and got Hannah Montana - The Other Side of Me (Remix) O_o

sunny successor, Monday, 14 July 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

UPDATE: Nokia 6310i on Orange PAYG still working.

Jarlrmai, Monday, 14 July 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

Midomi has been incredibly sucky for me; I sang the Chichester Psalms at it and it gave me a bunch of flamenco music.

HI DERE, Monday, 14 July 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

That sounds fantastic to me!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 July 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

Pandora is like my new favorite thing btw.

HI DERE, Monday, 14 July 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

i am now at work with my shiny 2.0-enabled iPhone BUT NO TIME TO FUCK ABOUT WITH COOL APPS. CURSES.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 14 July 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

Paying $15 for iToner is kind of redic.

stet, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

you fucking live in new york goddamn city you moron
this is like saying I just used night vision goggles and a dowsing rod to find my wallet

El Tomboto, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

last.fm wifi/3G only, according to that page at least. Still, nice to have two options for streaming personal radio stations - I've never used them before, due to mostly not working in front of a computer, but can imagine using them quite a lot now.

toby, Monday, 14 July 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

hey, i can save photo from flickr on to my phone.

what did someone say about taking a screenshot? Home button?

sunny successor, Monday, 14 July 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

this is really dorky (on iphone apps thread lol) but has anyone tried the crossword puzzles one, where you can download the day's puzzles from the NYT and other papers?

n/a, Monday, 14 July 2008 18:52 (seventeen years ago)

snapshot: home button and top button together. presumably not for too long, as i think that's a hard reset.
