Combined with the price for that thing, what better way to show you're stupid?
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 November 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)
I...have to admit, the thing is hideous but it wouldn't have occurred to me that it was racist. Maybe too many bible stories about burning bushes and pillars of fire?

Laurel, it's a burning cross for your lawn. That it's not actually on fire isn't really distance enough from, you know, crosses being burnt on black people's lawns to warn them that they're going to be killed if they don't leave town.
― J0hn D., Friday, 21 November 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)
"like a prayer" vid to thread?
― the birdman from the hilarious "alcatraz" prison (get bent), Friday, 21 November 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)
i don't think today's racists would be practical enough to even know how to assemble and light a burning cross. this is just the product for them.
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 21 November 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)
Uh yeah I get that. But only because ILX pointed it out; I would not bet money on my having thought that otherwise. Or at least not right away.
― One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Friday, 21 November 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)
hah I knew a kid in high school whose parents made one of these, only it was red lights and it was on their tv antenna. He came out to them the year after telling us about it.
― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 21 November 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)
Well, ILX/I got it from Professor Ann Bartow, who probably heard it from elsewhere - I mean, it took me a second, after which second I was like "are you guys serious? a burning cross on a lawn? for Christmas? you're joking, right?"

― gabbneb, Friday, 21 November 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)
the AFA online store has been much blogged about in the last week and a halfthe video they sell about the gays coming to your town to take it over was a popular topic as well
― TOMBOT, Friday, 21 November 2008 18:05 (seventeen years ago)
that site is hilarious
― bnw, Friday, 21 November 2008 18:06 (seventeen years ago)
(fwiw I think this falls much more easily into the "tacky" bucket than the "racist" one)(also everyone should be psyched when the gays take over, that's when your property values go up)
― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 21 November 2008 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

ps thanks to that site, today I have learned that women's gym Curves is run by scary God-bothers with horrible taste in music:

― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 21 November 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)
Oh, I already knew that! It's one of the reasons I didn't renew my Curves membership when it lapsed. Although the music at our gym was better.

Dan, you have a stronger stomach than I, to be browsing through that site. Make Laurel angry.

oyce Zounis' choice of abortion, not once but seven times, nearly cost her life.
I think that maybe abortion isn't the problem here.

gosh you're right gabs, a lit cross on a lawn in no way recalls crosses burning on lawns, it's just a bottle opener after all
― J0hn D., Friday, 21 November 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)
srsly would consider plunking down $82 for a 5.5 ft light-up combination cross/bottle opener

It'd be perfect for opening this:

John, I really do not disagree w you that this product should never have reached the market, but I think you're VASTLY overestimating the mental complexity of both the creators and their market. Even when it's punitive, racist, and evil, this religious belief/lifestyle set is IMMENSELY earnest. And not very sophisticated, nuanced, etc.
― One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Friday, 21 November 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)
it's not just that it's a "light-up cross", the construction of it (ie lumpy lights) WOULD and DOES resemble fire. it's not purposeful but that doesn't stop it from being retarded and anyone who is saying otherwise is a disingenuous spoiled white brat OR a secret british. DEAL
xpost more directed at gabbneb and kerm than you, laurel, but i think it's pretty lame to pretend everyone purchasing this product is some kind of forrest gump.

Ned for win
― J0hn D., Friday, 21 November 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)
I have no idea who's purchasing the thing, I don't know who's purchasing those propaganda videos either but they make my skin crawl. The cross strikes me as being as tacky as light-up Baby Jesuses for your lawn at Christmas, but if not for ILX I would have passed right over it! Maybe I'm just being naive/sheltered?
― One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Friday, 21 November 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)
lolz Ned zing
― Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 21 November 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)
I just have this strong feeling that the light-up cross is going to be hung from the pinnacle of garages as the "nativity star" in neon creche scenes for the holidays. I wouldn't put ANYTHING past those people.
― One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Friday, 21 November 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)
I'm just trying to imagine the mindset of someone who sees a 5+ft light-up cross and thinks "IT'S PERFECT" but I am probably discounting the part where the person is earnestly browsing this site intending to make a purchase.
― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 21 November 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)
they're taking it back.
