Good God man, how old ARE you?

Man Man (kenan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i guess it wasn't clear that i was responding to ez's post. sorry?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

10 days older than water.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

I took too sharp a left turn and Otto was in the passenger seat.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

haha

Man Man (kenan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I was comparing our 80s nostalgia as thirty-somethings to the 1950s nostalgia that we grew up around in the late 70s early 80s. I'm saying that we are old rockabilly dudes now.

Eazy (Eazy), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

The dirt will be cleansed easily from my fresh young skin!

Haha, awesome. I'm a little disappointed that you didn't take the Red Line last night, though. Now you can't tell any of your coworkers how totally easy it was.

re: headphones, I recently lost my nice ones after carrying them in my hoodie pockets after a night out so I'm bag to really big over-ear Sonys with slightly muddy sound that make my head/ears sweat after a while.

I will be singing "Leaf House" by Animal Collective. I can get behind "Erotic City," though.

Funny that that model had an "Objective" on her resume, because when I worked as a resume reviewer, that was absolutely considered over and a no-no. They're always so lame, too.

regular roundups (Dave M), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:23 (twenty years ago)

It's weird. I'm sick and I feel shit and I TOTALLY feel like being mean to someone, but today Dave is not that guy. What gives?

Man Man (kenan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

You can be mean to me because I'm about to leave. Today we get bought lunch by the bosses for our AWESOEM JOB PERFORMANCE. For some reason we're going to Pizzeria Due? This also gives me a chance to drop off my poor iBook with the repair people. Why didn't I buy applecare?

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I can get behind "Erotic City," though.

Someday there will be an ILM poll of best stand-alone singles of all time (problematic as that definition is), and this will make the top five, easy.

Man Man (kenan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

You have given in to the awesomeness that radiates from me since finishing my thesis. I just posted a Danielson song to the blog, p.s.

xp: I'll buy that.

regular roundups (Dave M), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Supreme authority on the 80s, oh you flatter me! Although I was just thinking yesterday how "Steppin' Out" was the second 45 I ever bought (after "Mickey") and I STILL totally love that song. Loved it when I was in 2nd grade, love it now.

By the way, who wants to start planning another karaoke night? I am so ready.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Joe Jackson? OMG I'm so with that. That is a great goddamn song. I remember emailing a friend of mine in college who was an electronic musician and a huge fan of the pop-perfect stylings of Erasure and Abba, and I said, "Dude. Check out the synth line in 'Steppin Out'."

Man Man (kenan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

um... He never wrote back. But I was not wrong.

Man Man (kenan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Yup, that "Steppin' Out." I still toooooootally love that song, especially the part where he goes "we'll leave the tv and the radio behind" -- I always really liked the tone of his voice.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Now
The mist across the window hides the lines
But nothing hides the colour
Of the lights that shine
Electricity so fine
Look and dry your eyes

Man Man (kenan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Beauuuuuuutiful. I dress in pink and blue just like a child -- even today.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

that is one of many Songs That Make Me Grin.

Juulia (julesbdules), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I just walked up 22 flights of stairs. My t-shirt is a little bit sweaty.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes being at work sucks SO MUCH. I honestly think I'd rather be eaten by a lion. The limbs being torn from the sockets, the flesh being ripped from the bones while I'm still alive... call me weird, but something about this idea is more appealing to me than editing Xcel spreadsheets.

Man Man (kenan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Why do you think I walked up 22 flights of stairs? Boredom.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

You... you walked up 22 flights of stairs out of... boredom?

I don't think I've ever been that bored.

In other news, my first concert was: Sha Na Na.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

And I've been bored enough to superglue empty cans to my own hands.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Or course, I was much younger and idioter and didn't quite understand what superglue was all about.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

I kinda almost wish boredom was my problem today. Instead it's about the complete opposite, I really wish we'd hurry up and hire an admin assistant. I could be about 1000x more productive.

And a tidbit sure to earn the respect of everyone in this thread, my first concert was NKOTB.

jonviachicago (jonviachicago), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Mine was Amy Grant. Just FYI.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

Jimmy Buffet.

This might be a very entertaining thread by itself.

Man Man (kenan), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

My first concert was supposed to be Michael Jackson but he got in trouble for kiddy fiddling and cancelled the Asian tour. So instead my first concert was DEEP PURPLE, with some newfangled guitar hero filling in for their real guitarist. I had never heard any of their music but American bands never came to India so all my friends and I went. We bought the better tickets but when we got to the sports arena the show was in it turned out the "better" seats were up in the bleachers while the cheap seats were on the field in front of the stage. Even though we had more expensive tickets they wouldn't let us into the cheaper, closer area. Some Indian dudes were trying to jump down from the bleachers and run up to the stage but these policemen would catch them and beat them with sticks. Finally we did the old "buy one ticket, one dude goes in and passes the ticket up to the next gut, etc.," thing and got to rock out to Deep Purple. My friend Amar tried to start a mosh pit because that was the thing to do at the time (1994? 1995?) but a Deep Purple concert in India was not the appropriate place.

Dan, if you're around: What was that book about Antarctica or the Arctic that you linked to a couple of weeks ago?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

my first concert: bon jovi w/cinderella opening. 1986, the centrum in worcester, ma. 14th row, not bad seats. in the midst of a lot of whores, i was totally wide-eyed.

incidentally i saw deep purple in 1987(86?) with ritchie blackmore. joan jett opened. it was weird.
had never heard any of their music but American bands never came to India

they aren't american.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:50 (twenty years ago)

OH SNAP

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

I've mentioned this like 100 times: my first concert: Eurythmics with Howard Jones opening, 1984 I think, with best friend and our moms and spray-painted pink hair.

I can imagine the whores at the BJ/Cinderella show in 86. WHOA.

see, this is a perfect example of the change in perspective that advanced age gives you. i can imagine them, you can imagine them, anyone could imagine them but at the time, as i was strolling into the arena, two weeks shy of my 14th birthday I HAD NO IDEA. my god what an eye opener. certainly put a baguette in my pocket.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I was 12 and really into REM, nuclear disarmament and world peace at the time, but I remember those girls because they were my friends' older sisters who took a lot of time in the bathroom and wore their eyeliner on the INSIDE of their bottom eyelid. By the way, I found some photos from around that time that I might share -- they're so sad.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Did they look like the women in the Cinderella videos? In the black and white polkadotted dresses?

OH god eyeliner on the inside... I remember that. I never did it, but my across the street neighbor did.

i can remember a lot of aqua-netted coifs and lots of mini skirts made out of what was probably some lyrca-cotton poly. i saw a lot of things that night.

by and large though, yes, they did look like extras from any generic video of the early hairband age. amateurs to be sure but dammit they were trying.

shake me was vastly superior to nobody's fool, for whatever that's worth now.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:24 (twenty years ago)

I was always fascinated by that guy's (singer of Cinderella) extremely floppy lips.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:25 (twenty years ago)

I had a Cinderella record and remember being a fan (I was BIG into false metal in junior high - other favorites included Def Leppard (but only Pyromania and before), Dokken, Helix, Accept... I had a subscription to Circus Magazine for shit's sake) but for the life of me I can't remember what they sound like.

He's really pouty. There's another pic of him on the site where I found those where he's pudged up and kind of looks like the larger of the Wilson sisters.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

tom something or other. shake me was on a mixed tape that used to get played during the bus ride of every pop warner away game we played that year.

xpost: I had a subscription to Circus Magazine for shit's sake ME TOO!!!

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

He looks sort of like Ian McCulloch though, now that I think about it.

Dan, if you're around: What was that book about Antarctica or the Arctic that you linked to a couple of weeks ago?

Big Dead Place

Also, I have found that http:www.bigdeadplace.com is an interesting site dedicated to Antarctic workers and their stories.

My first concert was Red Hot Chili Peppers.

xpost what is this, oldster day? :)
