I GET IT @ SMITH & VINE IN BROOKLYN. THEY SAY THEY CAN'T ALWAYS GET IT. IT IS A REASONABLY PRICED UNIQUE BOURBON.

I had Black Maple Hill at Tza's place when she lived in wburg before she abandoned us for the west coast. it was good but I had it on New Years Eve too late in the evening to have a real opinion

― tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 06:34 (sixteen years ago)
at first i thought it was really crazy bc of the nye thing...
but upon subsequent drinkings i felt totally knackered after like 2 sips. i see it in the stores here sometimes but i don't think i could bring myself to get it.
― tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 06:35 (sixteen years ago)
I bought a cheap scotch because i had been drinking bourbon all year and felt obligated to make a change. But there was a valid reason for only drinking bourbon all year: I really really like bourbon. I'll go get some tomorrow.
― derrrick, Friday, 13 November 2009 07:27 (sixteen years ago)
ha i'm the other way round, usually drink scotch then decided i wanted bourbon for a change but over here in the uk they're abt the same price. so it's like - i could get maker's mark or some single malt... i got the single malt.

I brought back a bottle of the Black Maple Hill from my NYC trip in the summer and really don't think it's anything special. Sorry, lolbrits etc.

Been working on a bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle, aged 10 years, 90 proof. A generous pour with one ice cube is perfect. Caramel, cherry vanilla, a hint of smoke and then a nice slow burning tingle on the end. This is a very good wheater, but lately I've been more in the mood for the intensity that only 107 proofers can offer.
Black Maple Hill has just started popping up on my radar in the last couple of weeks. Something about the packaging made me reluctant to try it though. But it is reasonably priced, so maybe I'll give it a shot next time.

Picked up some Ardbeg in Edinburgh last week. Holy shit my new favorite scotch in that price range.

― mark cl, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 13:22 (sixteen years ago)
whisky doing a good job of keeping me warm right now
― 囧 (dyao), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 14:13 (sixteen years ago)
the michter's came from downtown liquors in somerville. the hudson came from julio's liquors in westborough which stocks just about every whiskey i could think of--lots of four roses (which people apparently like a lot), lots of van winkle, even the old portero and rogue stuff from the west coast. they had laphroaig for $52! massive store and pretty close to my office.
so i know i've been psyched about everything itt recently but the hudson rye is like really, really good. sweet and spicy, lots of complexity, great aroma. i just sipped it neat last night (after almost killing myself trying to get the wax seal off) but want to try making manhattans with it soon. must be used judiciously though--tiny bottle and v. expensive.

had some eagle rare last night, good stuff
I like the Hudson Baby. a lot of my friends hate all of em though. the Hudson Four Grain is kinda weird, I don't think I'd ever buy a bottle (someone gave it to me). haven't tried the Rye.
― dmr, Monday, 23 November 2009 03:36 (sixteen years ago)
Damn. Bought Bulleit but agree with Mister Jim. Will have to be a mixer.
― ljubljana, Saturday, 28 November 2009 02:47 (sixteen years ago)
drinking knob creek @ mom's house right now.
― ian, Saturday, 28 November 2009 03:02 (sixteen years ago)
(xpost) Bulleit makes a great mixer! Been leaning toward the Old Weller 107 for that recently, though, damn hard to beat for $20/bottle.
ljubljana, have you been to Bourbon yet? Local bar w/ a great selection including some really unusual bottles, and the higher proof stuff may be more palatable to a scotch drinker. The owner there has me stuck on uncut & unfiltered bourbons & ryes, which run 130-140 proof. You can always add water to a bourbon, but once it's cut you can't take it out.
― I DIED, Saturday, 28 November 2009 03:10 (sixteen years ago)
i want to go to there.
― tehresa, Saturday, 28 November 2009 03:21 (sixteen years ago)
Yep, been to Bourbon many times, it's a co-worker hangout, but only for beers. Now it's fall, more off the beers and more onto actual bourbon, so time to go back and try the serious stuff. Thanks for the tip (duh, should have considered the name, maybe)

Yeah, kind of agree with this, but it's the best thing I'd use as a mixer, and I'd order it alone in a bar in a heartbeat. I didn't think it was GREAT on my first try after finishing off bottles of strong-ass Booker's, or Baker's, which is pretty sweet but definitely good, so it kind of bored me. After a few more rounds of it, though, it's an excellent value bourbon.
I have yet to try any of the Old Wellers, though. I better make a trip soon and try and cop some.
― throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Saturday, 28 November 2009 05:08 (sixteen years ago)
Drank a whole bottle of 4 roses during thanksgiving dinner. Delightfully smooth and mellow. Maybe the best 80 proof bourbon on the market.
Went with the four roses single barrel last night. Definitely had more of a charred oak flavor than it's cheaper brethren, but also hotter and stronger, while still smooth. Nice, but not worth the price really, compared to OWA 107 or Bakers or Van Winkle Lot B.

whoa mister jim how did you feel the day after thanksgiving
― call all destroyer, Saturday, 5 December 2009 06:04 (sixteen years ago)
This was the over the course of 11 hours, and the trick is to drink plenty of water as well. And while I'd say I was somewhat lethargic the next day, it wasn't that bad. I've been more hungover after drinking much less.
― Mister Jim, Saturday, 5 December 2009 06:16 (sixteen years ago)
what is repeal day? does that mean tax free?
― tehresa, Saturday, 5 December 2009 11:21 (sixteen years ago)
repeal day was when prohibition was repealed -- dec. 5, 1933.
― werner herzog eats a cookie (get bent), Saturday, 5 December 2009 12:13 (sixteen years ago)
picked up highland park just now, haven't tried. noticed that one of the few bourbons my place had was four roses! and for less than half the price of the highland park! gonna go back soon, I guess.
― 囧 (dyao), Sunday, 6 December 2009 08:50 (sixteen years ago)
highland park is my default single malt here in glasgow - its generally available, tastes real good and is not much more expensive than say a bottle of JD
― Ward Fowler, Sunday, 6 December 2009 10:36 (sixteen years ago)
my uncle has a theory that highland park is a bargain in the US because it sounds like the name of a housing project, rather than some mystical loch.
― This part of the sentence is even dumber. (lukas), Sunday, 6 December 2009 11:14 (sixteen years ago)
I must test your uncle's theory.
― American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Sunday, 6 December 2009 15:06 (sixteen years ago)
Highland Park is a lower middle class, largely Hispanic neighborhood in LA. I don't think the distillery is there.
― Clerk all KNOWIN (B.L.A.M.), Sunday, 6 December 2009 15:33 (sixteen years ago)
Same for Pittsburgh, although without the hispanic.

I went to a big repeal day party here in DC - pretty much all the best bartenders in the area, plus Dale DeGroff & Jeffrey Morgenthaler. It was great.

wow highland park is great - very drinkable neat, I don't think I'm gonna have this on ice at all

holding a bourbon tasting tonight w/friends iirc. van winkle 12 is one of the ones i'm strongly considering bringing to it.

― American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 12 December 2009 16:44 (sixteen years ago)
Its solidly my favorite, in a really, really competitive division of booze.
