A few years ago, the KKK requested a permit to speak on the capitol steps. The authorities held their noses and granted them the permit. 20,000 of us showed up an shouted them down. I was in the front row and I couldn't hear them, even with their P.A. system.

I like that better than outlawing racist speech.

timmy tannin (pompous), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

This term, first used in 1990's rural America by dancing hamsters, is often met with great jubilation and the tuting of horns.

The hell?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

literalisp (literalisp), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

dude is like 57, right? he grew up when kids could say shit like that in most parts of the country and not have anyone blink.

I'm 49 and I've never lived in a place where this would pass without comment (extreme comment in most cases). I've never lived in the south, but as an Air Force brat I did live in a lot of places.

And I remember a Barney Miller episode where Dietrich (the kind of intellectual white guy) said "honky" was derived from the nasal speaking tone of Caucasians. The Wiki thing sounds more believeable.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

Sure but as a general statement, there is no point to the need for free speech if everyone in the world has the exact same beliefs and opinions.

correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't moving towards some kind of common set of beliefs and opinions a good thing? not that it'll ever happen, of course, but this does seem to be reductio ad absurdum in excelsis, so to speak.

dan OTM.

yes, me too. and superb: you took a stand, you shouted them down, you won the battle. problem is (and remember: i'm a brit so i'm not hearing much chat about this story; it's more "WTF, crazy forgotten seinfeld racism dude" than big analysis time) are people making their voices heard about richards? are pundits/presenters/columnists/"opinion-formers" (euch) denouncing what he did, or are they all looking for ways ("regrettable outburst, remorse etc") to get him off the hook?

jon was never this good.

correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't moving towards some kind of common set of beliefs and opinions a good thing?

that, my friends, is fascism personified.

stfu, dickcheese.

that, my friends, is wankerdom personified.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha that 'my friends' is so choice.

"but isn't moving towards some kind of common set of beliefs and opinions a good thing?"

don't think anything's been personified here.

benrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

So can I watch my just purchased series 7 dvd on not?

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, it's very simple. if your ideal world is one where lots of people are fanatically angry about lots of different things and have the freedom to rant about them, why are you getting upset about this richards thing? surely he's behaving in the perfect way in this perfect world.

if, however, you think that humans should concentrate more on what binds them together than separates them ... well, by your logic you're obviously a fascist. and i'll give you the benefit of the doubt - your astonishing rhetorical skills notwithstanding - and say yes, i appreciate where you're coming from: imposition of belief systems is never desirable.

however, as dan rightly says, in some cases: why is there any argument?

you "dickcheese" :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 10:27 (nineteen years ago)

grimly fiendish, you are one fagtron of the highest order. and i don't mean you actually fuck men. you don't fuck anyone except yourself.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

lol doesn't "facism" even come from the italian "to bind"?

yeah yeah yeah everyone otm - but can i watch it or not?

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

jon was never this good.

i dunno, 1 image per post is a pretty rubbish way of trying to stop other people posting. i have images turned off so it's not gonna annoy me unless it's css or huge reams of text pasted over and over.

thread should probably be locked anyway.

2 american 4 u (blueski), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

roffle why am i even deigning to argue with someone whose end address is "btinternet?"

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

gettin back to the real issues at last

2 american 4 u (blueski), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

heheheh, i expected to come back to this thread and find CORUSCATING DEMOLISHING ARGUMENTS reducing me to a BLUBBERING WRECK. instead i learn a fun new word and remember that i really do need to change my fucking ISP, yo. thanks, hstencil.

ever feel we've reached the end of the line? ah, good. still, it's made a pleasant change from arguing about "thing" versus "think".

does anyone want to hear about my friend's teenage daughter, her worrying outbursts of racism (including - and this is in a fucking leafy suburb of glasgow - use of the n-word) and my friend's theories about multicultural schooling and the gangs therein?

no, thought not.

grimly fagtron (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, the KKK got a permit for a rally in my colllege town, to be held on the steps of some building. The school sent a group of people who arrived just as the permitted time ran out and got on hands & knees to scrub the steps with soap & water. I can't decide whether that's awesome or horrible in terms of a public gesture, but it's something!

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

awesome

wordy rappinghood (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

It is a bit "LOOK AT US SHAME YOU WITH OUR PEACEFUL PASSIVE RESISTANCE", tho. On par with people who're always pointing out that they spend their spare time reading stories to homeless children.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

It is a bit "LOOK AT US SHAME YOU WITH OUR PEACEFUL PASSIVE RESISTANCE", tho.

What, exactly, is wrong with that?

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Usually when the klan comes to rally yr supposed to avoid making a scene so they don't get the media coverage.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

I dont know what I think of this approach, one of my friends didn't like it much and was actually arrested for shoving a cop at a counterprotest to a klan rally. Everyone in h.s. called him 'cop killer'

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, maybe I'm just sensitive about my college education coming with a heaping side of self-righteousness.

old dude, science dropper: yeah i started looking up this stuff in wikipedia when i think of it.

Where's the money that was just here? I saw the money just a second ago and now it's gone, where did it go? Oh, there it is! It's underneath Old Dude Science Dropper because he is ON THE MOTHERFUCKING MONEY.

!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if this episode will have any lasting repercussions in terms of how comedians, esp. white comedians, handle race. Larry David's exchanges with Wanda Sykes on Curb Your Enthusiasm, for example, will seem to have that much more baggage (and close to home) from now on.

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Holy shit

Seconded.

Larry David's exchanges with Wanda Sykes on Curb Your Enthusiasm, for example, will seem to have that much more baggage

I don't think so, not at all.

sinshine (kenan), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i've been waiting to see if any priors start popping up. not the best evidence, but that hardly helps.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

priors or Pryors?

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

not the best evidence, but that hardly helps.

The evidence is all in already. But that clip is awfully unfunny and in brutally bad taste.
