Beam Black is a smokier, smoother version of Beam White. Still got more fire than Jack.

Ultraviolet Thunder (B.L.A.M.), Thursday, 12 November 2009 01:11 (sixteen years ago)

wild turkey's fine if you're having a beer + a shot. I don't think I'd sip on it though.

dmr, Thursday, 12 November 2009 05:18 (sixteen years ago)

never had any of these beams. just regular jim beam. oh maybe had gentleman jack once or twice. don't really remember it.

dmr, Thursday, 12 November 2009 05:20 (sixteen years ago)

dmr, Thursday, 12 November 2009 05:21 (sixteen years ago)

To a Scotch drinker, Maker's tastes like ice cream.

ljubljana, Thursday, 12 November 2009 06:31 (sixteen years ago)

^^^^^^^^^^^this.

And to a bourbon drinker, a good Islay tastes like really, really good topsoil. I mean that in a GOOD way, as the son of a gardener.

Ultraviolet Thunder (B.L.A.M.), Thursday, 12 November 2009 16:58 (sixteen years ago)

i haven't had scotch in a while now

call all destroyer, Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

yea, right? i keep telling myself "no more whiskey buys til christmas"

mark cl, Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

I don't even keep it around the house anymore. I regard this as a sad state of affairs.

I may change this tonight.

Ultraviolet Thunder (B.L.A.M.), Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

and i always just put off the really pricey stuff, like "no way am i gonna spend $60 on whiskey"

but then i spend like $80 on two different bottles

mark cl, Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:07 (sixteen years ago)

just need to suck it up and buy a bottle of laphroaig already. CAD u saying that found it for $40 in NH has prevented me from buying it for anything over $50. hard to find it for less than $55 in boston

mark cl, Thursday, 12 November 2009 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

I picked up a bottle of Wellers Special Reserve yesterday, and had a couple of pours over ice and found it a bit underwhelming. I figured it might be a change in my palette or it might be product drift. I tried to do some research to see if anyone else noticed anything or had an explanation. Didn't find anything directly on topic, but I did stumble on this discussion of Old Weller Antique 107, which is really interesting.

omaha deserved 311 (call all destroyer), Friday, 13 November 2009 03:20 (sixteen years ago)

I had Black Maple Hill at Tza's place when she lived in wburg before she abandoned us for the west coast. it was good but I had it on New Years Eve too late in the evening to have a real opinion

dmr, Friday, 13 November 2009 04:33 (sixteen years ago)

swear to god that shit is rufied.

srsly EVERY time i drank from that bottle i got wasted or felt woozy.

tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 06:34 (sixteen years ago)

at first i thought it was really crazy bc of the nye thing...

but upon subsequent drinkings i felt totally knackered after like 2 sips. i see it in the stores here sometimes but i don't think i could bring myself to get it.

tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 06:35 (sixteen years ago)

I bought a cheap scotch because i had been drinking bourbon all year and felt obligated to make a change. But there was a valid reason for only drinking bourbon all year: I really really like bourbon. I'll go get some tomorrow.

derrrick, Friday, 13 November 2009 07:27 (sixteen years ago)

ha i'm the other way round, usually drink scotch then decided i wanted bourbon for a change but over here in the uk they're abt the same price. so it's like - i could get maker's mark or some single malt... i got the single malt.

just sayin, Friday, 13 November 2009 09:08 (sixteen years ago)

Fuck. three Makers Olde Fashioneds. Gonna be a long Friday.

Ultraviolet Thunder (B.L.A.M.), Friday, 13 November 2009 15:06 (sixteen years ago)

I brought back a bottle of the Black Maple Hill from my NYC trip in the summer and really don't think it's anything special. Sorry, lolbrits etc.

I thought I could make it work because you look a bit like a man (aldo), Friday, 13 November 2009 17:19 (sixteen years ago)

Been working on a bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle, aged 10 years, 90 proof. A generous pour with one ice cube is perfect. Caramel, cherry vanilla, a hint of smoke and then a nice slow burning tingle on the end. This is a very good wheater, but lately I've been more in the mood for the intensity that only 107 proofers can offer.

Black Maple Hill has just started popping up on my radar in the last couple of weeks. Something about the packaging made me reluctant to try it though. But it is reasonably priced, so maybe I'll give it a shot next time.

Mister Jim, Saturday, 14 November 2009 07:06 (sixteen years ago)

Picked up some Ardbeg in Edinburgh last week. Holy shit my new favorite scotch in that price range.

"I get through more mojitos.." (bear, bear, bear), Saturday, 14 November 2009 09:30 (sixteen years ago)

tehresa, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 03:32 (sixteen years ago)

ohh those hudson whiskey bottles are the coolest

mark cl, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 13:21 (sixteen years ago)

cad where did you make your purchases?

mark cl, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 13:22 (sixteen years ago)

whisky doing a good job of keeping me warm right now

囧 (dyao), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 14:13 (sixteen years ago)

the michter's came from downtown liquors in somerville. the hudson came from julio's liquors in westborough which stocks just about every whiskey i could think of--lots of four roses (which people apparently like a lot), lots of van winkle, even the old portero and rogue stuff from the west coast. they had laphroaig for $52! massive store and pretty close to my office.

so i know i've been psyched about everything itt recently but the hudson rye is like really, really good. sweet and spicy, lots of complexity, great aroma. i just sipped it neat last night (after almost killing myself trying to get the wax seal off) but want to try making manhattans with it soon. must be used judiciously though--tiny bottle and v. expensive.
