slowing down and focusing on breathing cleanly and deeply def works

plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:28 (sixteen years ago)

caek says to press your middle finger and thumb together as hard as possible (on both hands) until the stitch clears, it didn't work for me but obv ymmv

coz (webinar), Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:28 (sixteen years ago)

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

focusing on breathing deeply has definitely eased stitches in the past. actually a lot of running difficulties have been solved by remembering to breathe properly

lex pretend, Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

Ran my second 13.1 miler today in 1:59:10. While I did break 2 hours, I'm really disappointed I can't run that distance faster. I should at least be able to do 1:45. I start getting delirious though, at about mile 11.

Jeff, are you taking any food and drink with you on your long run? If I was running for two hours, I would definitely have a gel or two, and that can definitely help stave off the brain fade.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 8 November 2009 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

Actually, I've been getting into these things when I'm running cos they're so light and not as messy as gels:

One gel at about mile 7. Water throughout, although not as much as I would like since the city has shut off most of the water fountains for the winter.

Jeff, Sunday, 8 November 2009 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

That'd be after about an hour I guess? Maybe try necking another after 90 mins. I always get some sort of scrambled head after a while too though, especially if it's windy.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 8 November 2009 22:22 (sixteen years ago)

ooh that looks like a nice running shirt, t! esp. foldable sleeves. i am in the market for some v. warm tights this winter myself.

i have no solution for side stitches. i just breath deep and run through them but sometimes they nag at me for miles! if i slow down a bit they're bearable but i wish i knew how to modify my eating/drinking habits to avoid them altogether.

jeff have you tried carrying a water bottle with you on long runs? i find it way less annoying than i expected.

Maria, Monday, 9 November 2009 00:21 (sixteen years ago)

I really don't like holding anything in my hands while I run. I think I'll probably pick up one of those dorky fuel belts though.

Jeff, Monday, 9 November 2009 02:30 (sixteen years ago)

My dorky fuel belt is my most treasured dorky running possession :(

I have the Camelbak Stamina one, which was kind of expensive, but it's really comfortable, doesn't move around at all (when you adjust it properly) and has just enough storage space (but no more than that). The bottle is way over-engineered though.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Monday, 9 November 2009 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

is it like a fanny pack?

sometimes if i want to run to the gym i just use a really crappy backpack and put it on w/ straps short enough that it doesn't bounce around too much, but obv, that would not work for a longer run.

tehresa, Monday, 9 November 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah it is. No space AT ALL for gym stuff though, just bottle, snacks, iPod, keys + ID.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Monday, 9 November 2009 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

I've got a proper biking Camelbak backpak too though, which is pretty good for running if you pack it right and squish everything down with the bungee.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Monday, 9 November 2009 22:26 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, my reason for the backpack is usually to carry a jacket for the way home, which can be chilly, and bottle, wallet, keys, lock.

tehresa, Monday, 9 November 2009 22:26 (sixteen years ago)

I wear a SPIBelt. No place for water though.

Jeff, Monday, 9 November 2009 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

it's raining.
i am trying to make myself go out and run. gahhhh lazy.

tehresa, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 20:55 (sixteen years ago)

Just do it, go ahead and enjoy splashing around. Unless it really chucking it down, you won't really even notice it that much after a couple of minutes.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

I had a cold and i didn't want to go running

but I did

feel pretty awesome btw!

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

i know, i always feel better afterwards, it's just the getting out the door part.

but you are right, nick.

tehresa, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 21:05 (sixteen years ago)

Do it do it do it do it.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 21:43 (sixteen years ago)

k it's true i feel better now

also a little sleepy

tehresa, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 22:40 (sixteen years ago)

i went too. it was hard. i never feel like eating for hours after i run either. that's bad.

harbl, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

mine was not too hard. i really don't notice the rain after a while, it's true. except when it picked up a little. still concerned i'm going to kill my ipod soon no matter what i do to try and protect it from moisture. maybe get a cheap shuffle that won't be as much of a loss if it goes? those are like $5 now, right?

i am usually hungry but feel more like sleeping afterwards. i think that's bc of the showering part.

tehresa, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

little shuffles are a good idea, also since they are flash drives, the impact barely effects them

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 22:53 (sixteen years ago)

I've yet to run this week. I think I ran too many miles last week and I've just found it hard to motivate myself to move that much. I need to get in at least 1 or 2 runs.

Jeff, Thursday, 12 November 2009 13:42 (sixteen years ago)

I ran on Monday, then came down with the flu or something Monday night, and I've yet to get out the door to run or go to class. (I did swing by the grocery store yesterday for some cough drops and stuff but that's it.) I'd actually much RATHER be running or in class today, I'm bored out of my skull!0

Maria, Thursday, 12 November 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

I had a fantastic run tonight. It was the first run I've had since the 13.1 one last Saturday. I started out and my calf and knee started hurting immediately, but within 2 miles I was just on cruise control. It was as close to a runner's high I've ever had, it almost felt effortless. I went for an hour, just over 7 miles. It's good to be back. Can't wait to get back out tomorrow.

Jeff, Friday, 13 November 2009 04:03 (sixteen years ago)

That's a long run. I've always wanted to do the Solider Field 10 mile run, but I don't think I've ever been in the shape to do it.

I signed up for the 2010 Solider Field 10 mile run this week! I actually think I'm in shape to do it now.

Jeff, Friday, 13 November 2009 04:06 (sixteen years ago)

Soldier. That's how you spelling it. Funny, neither past Jeff or future Jeff can get that right.

Jeff, Friday, 13 November 2009 04:07 (sixteen years ago)

lol. you spelling it!

tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 04:39 (sixteen years ago)

i went 3.25 miles run/walk (mostly run) today but the shocker was that my speed in the running sections was quite a bit faster than it has been for the past few weeks. curious!

tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 04:40 (sixteen years ago)

rather like sansa clip over shuffles since i dont know how ppl keep sanity w/out having some kind of screen. i think the new shuffles speak the tags-- that would make me fucking crazy.

bitter about emo (Hunt3r), Friday, 13 November 2009 04:48 (sixteen years ago)

my legs are aching after running yesterday, not sure why

coz (webinar), Friday, 13 November 2009 06:29 (sixteen years ago)

i think that's a setting you can choose but you don't have to have it?

i would probably want an ipod for the nike+ compatibility tho i guess if i got a shuffle i'd have to purchase the adapter and then i might as well just get a fancier gps thing. ugh.

i will probably do nothing and then get pissed in 2 weeks when my ipod dies from water damage lolz.

tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 06:29 (sixteen years ago)

my legs have been aching less!
i don't know why! i hope it sticks!

tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 06:30 (sixteen years ago)

the new shuffles are cool and great for exercise butttttttt the slightest suggestion of sweat and the remote control on the earbuds starts freaking out

coz (webinar), Friday, 13 November 2009 06:30 (sixteen years ago)

and yeah you can turn off 'voiceover' but I dunno why you'd want to, it doesn't speak the titles when the track changes only when you hold in the remote button for a sec

coz (webinar), Friday, 13 November 2009 06:31 (sixteen years ago)

oh i'd use my own ear buds probably... the ipod ones are not a shape suited to my ears apparently. ow.

tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 06:33 (sixteen years ago)

you'd lose the ability to skip tracks and select playlists then (no remote)

coz (webinar), Friday, 13 November 2009 06:34 (sixteen years ago)

so just plan playlist before run?
i had a shuffle with no remote years ago. it wasn't an issue.

tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 06:35 (sixteen years ago)

is there no play/forward/reverse button on the actual ipod???

tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 06:36 (sixteen years ago)

Got up early to do a long run before work. Holy hell it's pissing it down out there. Dark too. Why didn't I stay in bed?

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Friday, 13 November 2009 06:39 (sixteen years ago)

nope, all handled by the remote!

coz (webinar), Friday, 13 November 2009 06:39 (sixteen years ago)

what a ripoff! fuck that i'm not buying something that can only be controled via proprietary crap earbuds.

aw nick, you are a hero. good for you!!!

tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 06:40 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, now I think I don't wanna go and get drenched, and now I feel bad I bullied you into it the other day.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Friday, 13 November 2009 06:43 (sixteen years ago)

do it

coz (webinar), Friday, 13 November 2009 06:45 (sixteen years ago)

just do it, nick!

to be fair, i didn't get drenched, it was a pretty reasonable rain and i was being a wimp, it just looked worse from my window than it was when i got outside.

so uh... go!!!

tehresa, Friday, 13 November 2009 06:47 (sixteen years ago)

okay okay okay!
