I still like the smell even though I haven't smoked in several years.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Like Cheech Marin, I've given it up for salsa dancing, although in my case that's really kind of true. (Unfortunately, I haven't been doing that for a while either, but I expect that to change within half a year, if not sooner.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Or maybe that was Chong.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

but like anything, not to be used to excess.

Indeed. My uncle was (and probably still is) a tremendous smoker, and this definitely had a hand in his daughter's learning disability -- the kid didn't speak until she was almost 4. All that pot done fucked with his DNA for reals.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

king of the eyesores, my condolences. You can't choose how your zombified husband acts, but his bad choices are horrible for him and are going to force some extremely painful choices on you.

You need to decide whether you can live with him this way for the rest of your life. If you can't, then you have to decide where your cut-off point is. Then you have to make it absolutely clear to your husband where that cut-off point is and how much or how little you'll support him in making better choices and following through on them - but if he fails to make better choices, you'll cut him off. Then you have to act like you meant every word. That takes enormous strength - after all, you love him.

Aimless (Aimless), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Total fuckin' classic, but I'm sure my mind will be changed once I've "grown out of it" a bit...

I smoke marijuana almost daily; often multiple times per day. I like to play music while high, listen to music while cook, cook while high, eat while high, watch football (and baseball) while high. It is NOT conducive to me being a good student, however.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

other things i like to do while stoned:
-sew
-alphabetize
-paint
-draw
-play with kitties and puppies and bunnies and other cuddle animals
-fuck
-make out

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 14 November 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud, most of the time, for me. Unless it's supposed to be fun sitting around being shit scared to talk. And what gear said. And they even sit aruond smoking weed, talking about smoking weed, talking about the intricacies of rolling weed, listening to songs about weed... like a void of nothing.

Classic for getting to sleep, nice and easy. If that's what you want to do.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Sunday, 14 November 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, weed culture is kind of a bum out.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 14 November 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

classic-ish in very very very small/infrequent doses

dud to the point of abject fucking tragedy if you're one of several of my friends who are getting close to 40, and who've spent the last 20yrs of their lives with their main/only motivation being scoring & smoking it. Man, fuck that.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Sunday, 14 November 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic.

Marijuana Evangelists = Ultimate Dud.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 14 November 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

sitting around being shit scared to talk

so on the money. why am i always the most stoned person in the room :((
also the staelth hangover can be a bitch.

:| (....), Sunday, 14 November 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to hate getting high and sitting there having no idea what the fuck everyone was talking about. So then I hung out sober and watched them smoke up. Guess what? I still had no idea what the fuck everyone was talking about.

And saying that music sounds better high is like saying ugly chicks look fuckable whist drunk.

Pot tasted like a dirty sponge, and I've also figured out that I don't need any more help being lethargic and sleepy. Dud for me.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Music sounds DIFFERENT when stoned. YOu hear all kindsa things you wouldn't ordinarily hear. It's cool. But, yeah, it can make bad music sound interesting. But that's kinda cool too. I don't really smoke a lot of pot. every blue moon. but i would never hang out with potheads. that sounds awful. i mean, i used to when i was younger. i hung out with lots of people i would run screaming from today. it's better as a substitute for booze in the safety of your own home with a goofy movie or t.v. show to watch or an entertaining record on the hi-fi.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud in every way

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

people who take pot SERIOUSY, they are the ones to run from. the people who see it as a substitute for a couple of beers while they are watching Wife Swap, they are the more attractive pot smokers to me, The take it or leave it pot smokers. (the kind of pot smoker that doesn't even tell people they smoke pot. The people you would never even GUESS smoke pot. they are the cool ones.)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

DUD in every way except for some good music having been made under its influence.
still, you gotta wonder if that isn't cancelled out by even larger amount of crap music...

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

used to be classic, now total dud. anxiety, fear of people looking at me, fear of mirrors, fear, fear, fear. and flashbacks, believe it or not.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i used to get horrible panic attacks from pot when i was younger. i come from a long line of panic attack sufferers. my brother used to smoke every day and he would call the ambulance when he thought he was dying. so, i stayed away for years. when i was older i tried it cuz i was bored and it wasn't bad at all. i just don't feel the same. so, in my teens i could smoke pot: no biggie. but my 20's: no way. 30's: kinda nice every once in awhile. (hell, 2 or 3 times a year is enough for me.)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 14 November 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

dud, for same reasons as scott suggests: doesn't go well with anyone who has ever suffered from any kind of anxiety...

paulhw (paulhw), Sunday, 14 November 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised so many people are saying DUD.

The only dud thing about it is that I'm about to run out and don't know where to easily get more

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 14 November 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Neither classic or dud, it's just a fairly mild drug. I don't really smoke anymore, except if I'm at a party, and someone passes me some.

Just simply not for me. Drugs just don't interest me, while smoking is not something I'd do with tobacco due to family loss (lung cancer, etc.) = my reasons for not smoking pot are even greater.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Shrewd questions arise as a result of this vaporization claim. And no, I haven't. Hell, I heard it live from the band itself in a packed club when the volume and power of the music made it feel like rapture compacted, *anything* is a comedown after that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Alas, ye of little faith. ;-)

When I was fresh-faced, appealing, worry-free, limitlessly creative: Classic, smoked every single day and functioned incredibly. At one point I was probably the most quotable teenager in Canada.

Now that naivete has gone, I look how I feel, anxieties have been unearthed by time and powders: Dud, I try not to touch it, and even when I've had a good week and say what the hey, it still FUCKS with me.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

*the volume and power of the music made it feel like rapture compacted*
This is "higher" than anything I ever wrote (or thought) while stoned. Hmmm.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I GENERATE MY OWN DRUGS! I'M THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The funny thing about anxiety is that for a long time it never maybe me paranoid. And then I stopped doing it for a while and would do it occasionally in social situations, and after I had a really bad, near-psychotic, paranoid experience with it, it kept causing anxiety. But before that, despite my tendencies toward anxiety, it didn't make them worse. In fact, when I first started smoking it more heavily, it seemed to make it easier for me to handle social situations, but that went away really quickly. (Also we are talk about some pretty pot-friendly social situations: 24 hour modern dance performances, folkloric Brazilian music concerts, etc.)

scott is right: it makes you hear things differently, or at least it makes you think you are hearing things differently. I still think it helped me notice details I hadn't noticed before in recordings and videos, and that it made it more probable that I would discover those details; but I'm not convinced I could not have picked them up without pot (more that it made me more likely to notice them). There was a brief period after I stopped smoking pot that various music would make me think, "Oh man, I wish I were listening to this stoned," but I almost never think that now, and definitely haven't stopped enjoying music. (I think that dancing for long stretches of time also makes you hear music differently, but maybe it's more subtle.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 14 November 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I found that pot made everyday chores (going to the laundromat, cooking, maybe cleaning a bit) easier to deal with, but it tended to make it that much harder to solve problems that would arise, e.g., complaining to my land-lord about heat.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 14 November 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ironically, me and the missus got *veh* stoned and listened to Loveless last night after getting back from a party... LUSH!

stevie (stevie), Sunday, 14 November 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. I watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off on Saturday night after a couple of joints, and I noticed all sorts of stuff about the film that I'd never paid any attention to before. (And I've seen the film many times.) There were a whole lot of throwaway lines and musical flourishes that took me completely by surprise. ("How can you say we didn't have fun today? We ate pancreas!")

Dud. I watched Mean Girls while stoned last night and enjoyed it so much that I revived the thread. It may not have been worth it.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 14 November 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 5 October 2023 21:55 (two years ago)

I think the only solution is to time is so you're not high at all when you go to sleep, it's the sleep cycle disruption that gives you a weed hangover as I understand it.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 5 October 2023 21:56 (two years ago)

Yeah, I was going to say that for me the fog is worse the later in the night the consumption happens. Similar to alcohol, really. The closer you are to sober by bedtime, the better you'll feel in the morning. Of course, if you partly like weed to help fall asleep — hi there! — then the timing gets a little tricky. But for me it's rarely that big a deal, I'm sure it varies a lot by person — like everything with weed.

brimstead, Thursday, 5 October 2023 22:21 (two years ago)

Whenever I take anything to help sleep, it's usually right before bed, so I generally don't get any effects (that I know of) besides a good night's rest. Only challenge comes when the cat wakes me up in the middle of the night and demands a very groggy escort to the food dish. He's lucky I haven't stepped on him, I'm lucky I haven't fallen down the stairs.

fun times at prog nite at the local bar yesterday, we had a circle going featuring FIVE different forms of weed - one guy was passing a J, one guy had a bowl, I had my Pax2, the bartender had her vape pen, and then the DJ had some popcorn his wife made, which I ate against my better judgement, though luckily it was not too strong! suffice to say I was reaaaally feeling Gong that night

frogbs, Friday, 6 October 2023 16:14 (two years ago)

I just discovered a prog night at a local brewery a couple weeks ago, how did I not know these are actually a thing? Walking in to "I Talk To The Wind" with laser lights beaming across the ceiling was such a trip.

first time I went it was mostly older folks which was cool because some of them have actually seen these bands back in the day and will talk about what it was like getting The Lamb the day it was released. but lately there's actually been a lot of younger folks (well, people my age or a bit younger). outside one of them was asking the DJ "oh was that Van Der Generator before?". was really cool to see. later in the night he'll start playing stuff like Hawkwind and people will actually come onto the dance floor, it's wild

after all this talk on here i decided to take a thc cleanse! meaning, no gummies for awhile. its sad but i am already seeing the benefits. getting up earlier. more focus. reading at night instead of just passing out after hours of streaming tv/movies.
i was totally using them as medicine. the gummies. since the pandemic. for nighttime jitters. but i feel okay now. for me. mostly okay. thc definitely dulls my interest in things. which i kinda wanted for awhile. i didn't want to think. but thinking can be underrated.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 October 2023 18:22 (two years ago)

one year passes...

Everybody I know loves pot and a lot of my friends use it regularly, some every day. They say it makes them feel relaxed, happy, and sleepy, and even use it to help them sleep. I really want to feel like that!

But it totally wires me, and not in a good way. I think it's partly a physical reaction. I feel jittery and cold and am wide awake for ~hours~ afterwards. I completely lose my appetite and I can't have a coherent thought for more than a few seconds, and most importantly it transports me into a slightly paranoid mindset which is very unsettling

I've been trying to use it off and on for more than 40 years, telling myself I'll eventually get used to it, but I always have the same reaction.

Dan S, Friday, 20 June 2025 00:48 (one year ago)

40 years well. If there was a way to enjoy it I’m sure you would have found it by now.

calstars, Friday, 20 June 2025 01:03 (one year ago)

I have the opposite problem: even very small amounts make me extremely sleepy and fatigued for a solid day after.

whimsical skeedaddler (Moodles), Friday, 20 June 2025 01:13 (one year ago)

sativa > indica for that reason

calstars, Friday, 20 June 2025 01:19 (one year ago)

when I do too much I get that cold/jittery/scatterbrained feeling, the good news is once it passes I usually end up having a great time

I know some people who have a similar issue. from what I understand there are specific receptors for THC so it would make sense that they vary from person to person.

frogbs, Friday, 20 June 2025 01:24 (one year ago)

whimsical skeedaddler (Moodles), Friday, 20 June 2025 01:24 (one year ago)

I stopped telling people that I do (insert Delta Whatever and/or actual weed if I can ever get it), because if I do, they think I do it all day every day instead of the three tokes every few weeks that I actually do it.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Friday, 20 June 2025 01:24 (one year ago)

Dan S, I share a lot of the same symptoms.... I get bugged out and sometimes paranoid, self-defeating and unable to sleep

A couple months back I was walking around the lake in Oakland and this dude had giant jars of mushrooms for sale, but on the side of the table he had little bags of weed for $5 apiece.. I would say they were about half an eighth (which would have cost me $25 in the 90's, easily). So I bought one with 'Jelly Roll' written in sharpie on it

This weed is what I've been looking for... I don't get super fucking stoned, and more importantly I don't start doubting/recriminating myself ('Do I have an ugly laugh?').. I just get relaxed and often feel downright positive about my life's trajectory. It's kinda been a game-changer in that the positivity is still there the next morning. I sorta want to hunt down the mushroom vendor to see if he has anymore 'Jelly Roll', I'd buy another nickel bag

The whole indica vs sativa or whatever is mostly bullshit from what I gather.. but careful breeding can produce strains that aren't a complete paranoid nightmare (which I had two weeks ago when I took ONE PUFF off a friends vape pen and I could barely walk or make it home on my bicycle)

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 20 June 2025 01:26 (one year ago)

the first THC cart I got was awesome, lasted me like 3 months too even though I was honking on it every other day or so

I haven't found a good one since though...they make me cough like crazy now, I get lightheaded and weird but not in a good way. it's strange because I'm pretty sure the one I got was a fake cart

but yeah the strain can matter a lot. all the actual flower I've gotten has been good but some has been better than others

frogbs, Friday, 20 June 2025 01:34 (one year ago)

dude I coughed like a motherfucker off my buddy's vape pen, I thought I had TB

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 20 June 2025 01:38 (one year ago)

Strains for me are like

Sativa = alert for a bit then sleepy and fatigued
Indica = comatose

whimsical skeedaddler (Moodles), Friday, 20 June 2025 01:40 (one year ago)

I am too old and fragile for experimentation; I found an edible type and dose that is very consistent and predictable, and therefore easy to calibrate.

It's notable that weed and weed-adjacent things have become easy to purchase and unproblematic to consume in many places; that ease has definitely changed the vibe, though.

In my youth the surreptitious / dangerous / risky edge to purchasing drugs made the resulting drug experiences feel urgent and transgressive in a way that I do not miss. That urgency and scarcity caused me to want to Do All The Things while high, which is the opposite of mellow. And every time there was a knock on the door we just _knew_ it was the cops, although it never was.

In 1990 I had to meet a sketchy guy named Brik in an alley and hand over a wad of 20s while glancing nervously in every direction; the first time I had weed delivered by a person wearing a uniform was... an adjustment.

Since, I have adjusted to the normalcy of inserting a sort of temporary chemical cushion between myself and the harsh edges of the clanging world. I don't want to rely on it but it is a good tool to have handy.

Dan S, Friday, 20 June 2025 02:18 (one year ago)

lol yeah the dispensaries have all tried so hard to NOT seem like head shops.

It's weird being in an illegal state but with vape stores all selling hemp-based carts and edibles, and seemingly half the people I know manage to keep supplies of one thing or another around. The whole country is awash in THC.

― frogbs, Thursday, June 19, 2025

I know not to take too much anymore, and 5-6 hours later I feel more relaxed, but by that time I should have already gone to sleep and am just exhausted from all of the jitteriness and the feeling that I have Alzheimer's, so it's not fun

I haven't had the experience of any strains or varieties (Sativa, Indica, etc) or local products being different from any others. They all have the same effect on me.

I think pot is much stronger than when I was a kid, and even then I didn't have a good experience with it

the guy i buy off often has one called 'jelly cake', which i guess is uk equivalent, lol. i had some but found it a bit too mongy, felt spaced on it. i smoke maybe one joint a week and this friend of a friend delivers it in a car, it still has a mildly amusing sketchy feeling. i also don't know him even slightly so the small talk is funny. i got a re-up today and he was like 'let me know if there are any problems... though i can't imagine what problems there would be'

'wedding crasher' is the one i buy most of the time from him. it's quite fun in that it doesn't really make me sleepy, more like alert and interested in stuff.
