A shtick (Yiddish: שטיק) (or schtick) is a comic theme or gimmick.

people also use the word schtick to mean style or motif or what have you

Coworker recommends I'll bagatto for dinner. Anyone been?

not in years, but it used to be really good. piadina, gnocco, and perbacco are a few other good italian places with similar price points in that area.

went to no 7 last night--starters were fantastic, gf got this broccoli tempura-type thing with a black bean sauce and i got some good pork with these amazing fried eggs... entrees werent quite as amazing but still way enjoyable--salmon with scallion pancake and vegetarian lasgna. also not too amazingly crowded. spent most of the night staring a dude who we think we went to college with.

bagatto was alright... i had the saltimbocca which i found a little salty, but with nice use of sage and my friend said his tagliolini di mare was excellent. as i was walking out, i noticed that 90% of tables had the same 2 dishes! almost went for a halibut special with beans and broccoli rabe, but i'd had a lot of fish this week.

i don't know who any of you people are ever.
If you like M Shanghai, a good night to go there is Halloween, because after eating juicy pork buns and morning glory you can dance it off at the Night of the Living Dead Disco Halloween party downstairs, then come back upstairs and eat more soup dumplings.

ate at james on saturday--crowded, i guess from the ny times & new yorker reviews last month, and we had to wait 45 minutes for a table for 2 even tho we were there at 7, and $$$...
but. i thought it was great. delicious crispy sweetbreads and loin of lamb, gf had amazing ravioli, excellent ricotta beneigts for dessert. i had a good cocktail too. i have to say it may have just been one of those nights where that kind of dinner is exactly what im in the mood for & so it makes the food even better, but i left 100% satisfied and eager to go again
― Uncle Shavedlongcock (max), Monday, 3 November 2008 16:37 (fifteen years ago) link
i fucking love sweetbreads.
we had such a disappointing meal at the midtown branch of joe's shanghai over the weekend. never again. soup dumplings were okay, but everything else was kind of lousy.

It was horrible.

haha - i wondered about that. aren't they claiming that that they have a chef who worked at el bulli or suchlike?

it was just the same as before, but with better lighting. i think we got our waiter in trouble when i had to go up to the front to ask the owner/mgr or whoever for our check because we hadn't seen the waiter in 20 min.

oh btw i ate at delicatessen a couple weeks ago but it was so fucking bland and gross and we had the worst/dumbest waitress in the world that i tried to wipe it from my memory--if u have the same thought process as me which is like, "oh hey im in soho, maybe i should give delicatessen a shot even tho its supposed to be bad, since tis like right here and can it really be that bad," well, it is, mostly cause theyre charging obscene amounts of money for what mostly just tastes like microwave dinners
― Uncle Shavedlongcock (max), Monday, 3 November 2008 16:51 (fifteen years ago) link
but max, they microwave it FOR YOU!
― ian, Monday, 3 November 2008 16:51 (fifteen years ago) link
actually my salad was OK but the fried chicken was just retardedly bland and the ice cream was actively terrible
did you try the cheeseburger egg roll or whatever the hell that thing is?
― lauren, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link
lol i've never even really considered eating at kellogg. it just doesn't occur to me.
― Surmounter, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:34 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah i had the cheeseburger spring rolls--not BAD but theyre basically just hot pockets
― Uncle Shavedlongcock (max), Monday, 3 November 2008 17:35 (fifteen years ago) link
which let's be real if you want basically just a hot pocket the only way to go is the real deal

My only complaint is that their chicken/dumplings consist of potato dumplings and not big honky dough balls

where should i have a late lunch this afternoon? i have a few hours to kill in the east village/l.e.s. before a 4:30 movie. looking for someplace w/vegetarian options, where i can sit and read for a while...

I went to the Five Spot the other week and while I didn't eat there (tho I was tempted), the decor is pretty WTF and kept me amused for about 90 mins just looking around. More former pharmacies, please!
