I think Season 3 and Season 4 are the best.
― sarahel, Friday, 6 November 2009 00:21 (sixteen years ago)
Second!: I always liked The Sopranos just fine. But it placed the lowest of the top 10 shows on my own poll. I always felt that it was just an eeeeeeeensy bit overrated. And then the last season started, and it was a magnificent start. And then Chase got his extra half a season and the quality dropped so drastically, so sharply, that I was relatively uncommitted by the time the considerably-improved final bit of the series wrapped up.
Third!!!!: Lost, as far as I'm concerned, isn't character driven at all. There are only a couple of characters I care a whit for and only a few relationships that involve me at all. The show is just a big plot-driven puzzle box, and when it's on I am glued to the screen. It's an event. And, yes, there was a pretty significant drop in quality in season 3, but the show has regained its bearing and has been soaring triumphantly through the cosmus ever since. It's the only current MUST-see (like, I can not wait at all) show on my ballot.

yeah watching just season 1 is equivalent to watching the pilot episode of some other show...not to say that it doesn't reflect the series, but it just goes so much further

it took me 2 months to get thru that 30 Rock thread because i'd slept on it for so long (much like i did AD) so would read it up to when people started quoting the next one i had yet to see. thank fuck for bookmarks. it should've been prime time Friday night on Channel 4 but yes sometimes this country actually is deeply stupid.
xp dammit
― modescalator (blueski), Friday, 6 November 2009 00:25 (sixteen years ago)
Also, Lost is a really weird beast insofar as it's kinda crappy (plot threads that go nowhere, characters that you don't really care about and who do and say the stupidest things just to advance the plot in really contrived ways, etc.) at the same time that it's the most amazing and compelling thing ever. I can't think of much else like it in that regard.

okay I guess I'm safe to start watching The Wire.
So why no 24? I woulda thought its popularity would've been comparable to that of Lost.

Like The Sopranos, Arrested Development (I'm bracing myself for SBs here) is kinda overrated, too. Tight, smart, dense, frankly groundbreaking, and often hilarious, but it always felt to me a little like a starter show for Hurwitz. Like he (or someone else intimately involved in the show) would go on to create something even more amazing someday, y'know? Kinda the opposite of The Office, in a way, inasmuch as it was pretty clear that Gervais had blown his load straight out of the gate.
― I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 6 November 2009 00:30 (sixteen years ago)
Paul Ross >>> Jonathon Woss.
― Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 6 November 2009 00:31 (sixteen years ago)
Didn't Hurwitz do something post-AD? That absolutely no-one gave a toss about and was awful?
xxpost
It had a perfect ending, though, so I'm a little chagrined about the movie.
― I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 6 November 2009 00:32 (sixteen years ago)
he had an animated series, the name of which I forget. he also did a pilot for a US version of The Thick of It, which was rejected. xpost

Ha ha. Yes. Sit Down And Shut Up. Which, by all accounts, is Not That Good.

So why no 24? - Sort of a guilty pleasure for a lot of folks, I would imagine (I mean, it is pretty unintentionally laughable in a lot of ways). Also damaged by a couple of really awful seasons.

looks v bad despite Arnett presence. i hear Portia is in some new quite good thing tho.

Yes, Portia is in the very unfortunately titled Better Off Ted. The little bit of it that I've watched was very interesting and showed a lot of potential. Not anything like what the title might suggest.
― I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 6 November 2009 00:35 (sixteen years ago)
Still waiting for the Mr. Show reunion on 24, but Tom Kenny must be rolling in Spongebob money.
― Philip Nunez, Friday, 6 November 2009 00:35 (sixteen years ago)
xxxxp, better off ted? it's not funny.
― caek, Friday, 6 November 2009 00:36 (sixteen years ago)
24 was properly amazing for a while. got friends who enjoy it but i couldn't bear the drip drip process and it really is horrible a couple of episodes when so little of any consequence is happening.
― modescalator (blueski), Friday, 6 November 2009 00:36 (sixteen years ago)

be honest tho, how true is this statement: 24 peaked halfway through season 1 - pretty OTM. There was one season, 4 or 5 maybe, that I preferred. I tend to like that show best when it is at its most ridiculous, tho.
― you just freaked out more than our director of lols (Pillbox), Friday, 6 November 2009 00:39 (sixteen years ago)
That Omar scene is fucking amazing. Only one of several characters on The Wire that I full-on LOVED.

Jack parachuting out of plane about to nuke and then being forced to shoot Chapelle the head of division in the back of the head was also A+
― modescalator (blueski), Friday, 6 November 2009 00:41 (sixteen years ago)
The Wire, obviously, is the greatest thing ever but still, 19 #1 votes is ridiculous. I kept being so tempted during the voting process to type: ok people you can all stop voting for it now, it won like 3 days in, give something else a chance.
