couplolling

west wing is catchy and full of likeable people. this is the problem.

modescalator (blueski), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

It just occurred to me that Gilmore Girls, like Friends, is vastly improved by skipping past the opening song. Blerg.

― I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, November 4, 2009 12:28 PM (1 minute ago)

i'm probably waaay in the minority here but unless i'm pressed for time i almost always watch the theme song. i guess i've always thought the show's sentiments could be more accurately summed up by something like, idunno, taylor swift instead of the indier signifiers it always shot for.

k3vin k., Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

I voted West Wing number 1, and can deal with scott's hatred. It is almost perfect TV.

Coupling will not show up, because I'm probably the only person on earth who will admit to thinking it's brilliant*. Don't think it was even nominated. I like it better than a whole lot of stuff I voted for, tbh.

* think some other fans may be out of the woodwork now that Moffat is doing Doctor Who

ailsa, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:34 (sixteen years ago)

best theme song ever = L O S T

"Somebody's Going to Emergency"

lol I remember gearing up to watch this episode and trying to predict, along with my girlfriend, who was going to emergency and who was going to jail and then being disappointed to find out it was just a stupid Don Henley song.

jaymc, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

I tried watching The Thick of It recently but it was just way too English for me to really get and I love many English shows

You can say what you like about The Thick Of It, just don't call it "English".

;)

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

I just realized that I've never seen a single episode of The West Wing.

bear say hi to me (ENBB), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

Happy to see a few of my choices have made it so far:

49. State of Play (8 votes, 1170 points.) - whoever said this should have been the last season of the Wire so otfm. And I don't want to hear anyone say that they've already seen the movie - no excuse, the show was 6 hours of all killer, no filler, it's worth watching.
43. The Simpsons (15 votes, 1290 points.) - had a criminally steep dropoff in quality this decade but it still had many quality episodes and it deserves to be here. And even when the Simpsons is bad it's still infinitely superior to Family Guy
37. Oz (11 votes, 1530 points.) - I watched this when I was in high school, and when I was watching the Wire I felt that this was its spiritual predecessor. However when I rewatched Oz after The Wire I realized how ridiculous that was. Oz is a soap opera that gets more and more ridiculous as it progresses, but it's so entertaining that it's hard to mind.
33. Project Runway (15 votes, 1670 points.) - one of the better reality shows. I voted for American Idol but I doubt that will make it.

Honorable mention
31. House M.D. (16 votes, 1860 points.) - The first few seasons were outstanding, I stopped watching around the time that what's-her-face died. Got a bit too ridiculous. Incidentally I had just finished The Wire when that season started, and I also stopped watching Heroes around that time. Don't want to tell people that The Wire ruins TV for you but I think it did for me a bit...

Six Feet Under getting fuxxed over here as expected huh

xxp

how the hell was king of the hill not nominated

a goon boy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

I voted for American Idol but I doubt that will make it.

i pretty much couldnt be more confident that AI is going to make it, top 15 easy

k3vin k., Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

i had chappelle in my top 5, i've said this before but the #1 most important comedy to people my age

a goon boy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

the west wing is the reason i voted for mccain.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

did KOTH just finish for good. so many unseen episodes. understated = underrated.

modescalator (blueski), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

Six Feet Under getting fuxxed over here as expected huh

I'm guessing The Sheild was ignored as well.

you just freaked out more than our director of lols (Pillbox), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

Sarge I didn't vote but if I had then Chappelle would have been in my top five as well - no question.

bear say hi to me (ENBB), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

only 5 of mine on here so far. confident that 12 of the others i chose will make it in the top 20.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

i really hope 6fu makes it (either 1st or 2nd for me, cant recall)

FNL has a great opening theme song

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

nor have i, though my parents love it and i've always meant to watch it.

Yeah, my parents were big West Wing fans, too, and I never saw it until recently. I started watching it after Obama was elected and I needed to something new to appease the political junkie in me.

jaymc, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

you think? I gave it my #1 vote so I've done all I can. The Idol thread participation seem to be limited to a small group of ILXors but if people come out of the woodwork to vote for it then great.

musically, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

sadly i have seen more of a Right Guard advert Chappelle did years back than his show itself. has he actually been in many films? this defecit has affected his exposure outside the US surely. liked the Block Party film tho.

modescalator (blueski), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

Fairly confident two of my top 5 won't be making it now (the other three - West Wing, House, State of Play) are there already. One more of my top 10 (Inbetweeners) in so far as well - I'd only be mildly confident of one more of my top 10 making it in, and even then I'm not sure.

I am not part of the hivemind, as you can tell. I don't even like The Wire :-(

ailsa, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

Only had 5 so far but I'm fairly certain that some more of my votes will make it. Some however, didn't and for them I pour one out.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:43 (sixteen years ago)

best theme song ever = L O S T

Everyone knows it's Doctor Who.

OK Abacus (chap), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:43 (sixteen years ago)

no Murray Gold totally ruined that jam

modescalator (blueski), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

Blueski - Yeah, DCBlock Party was great. TBH I like his stand-up best but the show was excellent too. I don't know that I've actually seen him in that many movies. Hmmmm.

bear say hi to me (ENBB), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

The basic tune's so good that no amount of over-orchestration can truly ruin it.

xpost

OK Abacus (chap), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

I never really "got" Chappelle's Show, but I heard so many people back in 2002-03 talk about how genius it was that perhaps it was slightly ruined for me by the time I saw it.

jaymc, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

apparently he was offered a shit-ton of money for another season of Chapelle's Show but he turned it down and went to Africa (?) to hide out, the gossip was that he had some sort of nervous breakdown. Apparently he's over the fame thing now and lives on a farm with his family.

musically, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

xpost what's to get about it? it's a funny sketch show.

TGAAPQ (Mr. Que), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:48 (sixteen years ago)

7 of mine have made it, only expecting 5 more to make the cut (unless there a bunch of other silent Monk and Wire In The Blood stans out there)

chapelle was really really funny but comedy centrals decision to play it 3 times a night for 5 straight years despite a lack of seasons ruined it for me.

PHEAR MY POORAPULT (jjjusten), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah it is such a shame he went mental or whatever. Kind of hoping he would make some classic movies (and end the curse of the great black stand up making toss movies.)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)

of the ones already listed i voted for: house (yet another show that would have benefited from the supremely sensible british tradition of 2 or 3 series and you are done), oz, chappelle's show, how i met your mother, wonder showzen, and gilmore girls.

gilmore girls was my number two and i KNOW that my number one and number five will make the list, but i highly doubt that my number three and four will.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)

what's to get about it?

Hence the ironic quotation marks.

jaymc, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:51 (sixteen years ago)

Half-Baked is hilarious and classic imo, but for the most part his film work is all undistinguished supporting roles in stuff like Con Air and You've Got Mail

some dude, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:52 (sixteen years ago)

jaymc--did you just think it wasn't funny?

TGAAPQ (Mr. Que), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:52 (sixteen years ago)

x-post I thought 1/2 baked was HYSTERICAL when I saw it in the theater but I was way more than 1/2 baked that night so I have no idea if I'd think so upon another viewing. I do remember pretty much dying when Bob Saget came on screen and talked about sucking dick for crack but that was before I knew he was kind of filthy in general.

bear say hi to me (ENBB), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:54 (sixteen years ago)

i.... like the recent doctor who themes. sorry!

Nhex, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:54 (sixteen years ago)

Scott: Want to bet on that?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

Mr. Que: I thought it was amusing in parts; overall, I think I just wasn't on its wavelength.

jaymc, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

okay, i'll make an exception just this once. i don't hate ilxors who like the west wing. and i don't hate my mother-in-law or her wife. but i hate everyone else. like your mom, probably.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

so far 7 shows from my ballot have appeared, and i figure at least 5 or as many as 10 are still to come, i really have no idea at this point

some dude, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

I'm genuinely pretty surprised that Planet Earth and Chappelle's Show placed so low.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

"Scott: Want to bet on that?"

hmmmm, really? okay, then i will stand corrected. just figured they were my sentimental faves and would get forgotten.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

Only 5 of mine have made it so far but that's okay - i knew abt 10 of them weren't that huge on ilx anyway. just happy that Party Down made it.

Roz, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

i'm guessing i should see planet earth, huh? should i watch it stoned after i watch half-baked?

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

scott all the qualities that i assumed you hated West Wing for went out the window when i realized you love Gilmore Girls

some dude, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

x-post - yes.
