I actually ran with my heart rate monitor for the first time in a long time last night. I spent most of my run at 160-165. I was trying to run six miles in under 50 minutes, so I ended up sprinting at the end and hit 175. According to the FUCKING MAYO CLINIC my MHR should be 190. I guess that seems right, but it would be pretty miserable to try and reach that.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 23:33 (sixteen years ago)
my observed max hr during years and years of racing would be something more like 205-age, if that high.
aint tryna fuck w/ no mayos tho, they come hard
― bitter about emo (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 01:20 (sixteen years ago)
The problem with those target heart rates is it's really no fun to run at them.
― Maria, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 01:41 (sixteen years ago)
well, i don't htink you should be running at your mhr bc then you might fall over and die?
― ms. thighs (tehresa), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 01:42 (sixteen years ago)
Your max heart rate does vary with what sport you're doing though, doesn't it? I think I read that observed MHR on a bike is about 10 bpm less than your running one, cos you're primarily just using your legs, and that muscle group alone can only make your heart work so hard.
― Obscured by clowns (NickB), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 08:45 (sixteen years ago)
I dunno, from previous experience zones 1 & 2 are fine, and if anything, I have tended to stray above them more than I should on 'easy' runs. It's nice sometimes to be running and then look at your wirst and see that you really should be going a little slower, it gives you an excuse to relax a bit.
Have enjoyed running in zones 3 & 4 in the past too, cos there's nothing better than feeling yourself running really fast, if only for a few moments. If you can make yourself to go there, it's great, but your motivation needs to be a lot stronger than your aversion to pain. These days I really struggle with that, but I think that's more due to a greater distaste for pain than anything else.
― Obscured by clowns (NickB), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 08:58 (sixteen years ago)
my understanding is yes max hr varies by activity. doc teammate said body position et al affect efficiency i think.
― bitter about emo (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 4 November 2009 13:23 (sixteen years ago)
Took yesterday off after runnng for 7 days straight. Needed it.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 14:16 (sixteen years ago)
Ran my second 13.1 miler today in 1:59:10. While I did break 2 hours, I'm really disappointed I can't run that distance faster. I should at least be able to do 1:45. I start getting delirious though, at about mile 11.
― Jeff, Sunday, 8 November 2009 01:35 (sixteen years ago)
running makes my hips sore sometimes. but sometimes not.i've been having a lot of fun at it lately though.
― harbl, Sunday, 8 November 2009 15:39 (sixteen years ago)
get a foam roller maybe? everyone sez it's all abt loosening up the IT band...i have recently started and i think it helps
ran for consecutive days for the first time in a while...feelin pretty good, other than being hungover ~
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 8 November 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i should get one and i should be doing lunges and abductor/adductor exercises. ugh so boring though.

― tehresa, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:19 (sixteen years ago)
btw totally digging trails and hills on trails (waht!) lately so i want to start going to the bigger parks with longer trails but it feels like such a waste of time to travel there.
― tehresa, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)
u guys r making me feel way guilty
― plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:23 (sixteen years ago)
it's ok my distance is still really short and i suck a lot
― tehresa, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, i haven't gone in over a week because "i felt a cold coming on" lol i am a pussy
― plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)
There's no such thing as a bad run. Actually, I've had plenty of bad runs, but at least I almost always feel better after them.
― Jeff, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i don't run that long right now but it's still great. i just try to go 40-45 min and make at least 75% of it running, and to run up the hill. but i've also been doing about one continuous run per week and making it progressively longer. and i'm soooooo slowwwwwww
― harbl, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)
yea i agree abt once i actually get goin its the right decision - i will probably go later today, although my back is kinda sore from raking leaves
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)
my mother has been on a big 'i want to buy you things' kick lately for some reason so i got this: http://images.teamestrogen.com/ri/300/300/2009_Spring/BR-220006-072.jpg
which is awesome because the sleeves flip out into mittens and have thumb loops and also it has a hood. i've found it to be perfect in terms of providing warmth when i first start out and am freezing but also easily adjusts to regulate temp after warmed up. i'm so spoiled for a newbie. uhhh anyway, it makes me less rain phobic i guess.
― tehresa, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)
i am struggling with going out to run now vs. going to get office supplies bc my desk is a disaster and i'm not being very productive :(
― tehresa, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)
wow i want that! i always run in a longsleeve cotton tshirt. which is stupid.
― harbl, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:33 (sixteen years ago)
its wicking properties are kind of amazing.
i feel silly with like 'gear' bc i suck so much, but it is v v nice and i didn't pay for it so...
before i was running in the baselayer i use for hiking on cold/rainy days which was not too bad but this is better.
― tehresa, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:34 (sixteen years ago)
guys gear rules and cotton blows unless its the summer time
― how rad bandit (gbx), Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:48 (sixteen years ago)
also trails + hills >>>>>>>>>>>> pavement, real talk 4ever
i forget who but someone i know was going on about how cotton = death a while ago and it was hilarious but also true (at least for hiking).
― tehresa, Sunday, 8 November 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)
when I'm running I often get a pain across my abdomen - it feels like muscle strain but does running really work your core? could it be something else, like lactic acid or oxygen/stitch related?
― coz (webinar), Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:04 (sixteen years ago)
I love gear.
― Jeff, Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:05 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, gear is great :)
― coz (webinar), Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:08 (sixteen years ago)
is it maybe my running posture? I tend to run pretty upright
― coz (webinar), Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)
maybe you're running too soon after eating?
i'm gonna have to get some clothes suitable for winter running, finally admitting that the season of t-shirt & shorts is over :(
― lex pretend, Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:15 (sixteen years ago)
it does just sound like a stitch though. bastards. i get them less now i've been running regularly for over half a year but they do tend to spring w/o warning or reason sometimes
― lex pretend, Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:16 (sixteen years ago)
nah, it definitely wasn't running too soon after eating, I'm always very careful about timing meals around exercise
I tried caek's magic stitch clearing technique but it didn't do anything : /
― coz (webinar), Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:19 (sixteen years ago)
googling suggests that the core is very important for running but it doesn't say if it's specifically worked by the exercise: I know w/cycling your core is again v.important but being on the bike gives you very little core work. hm
― coz (webinar), Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:22 (sixteen years ago)
what is the magic stitch clearing technique!! it's not on this thread...
― lex pretend, Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:25 (sixteen years ago)
slowing down and focusing on breathing cleanly and deeply def works
― plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:28 (sixteen years ago)
caek says to press your middle finger and thumb together as hard as possible (on both hands) until the stitch clears, it didn't work for me but obv ymmv
― coz (webinar), Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:28 (sixteen years ago)
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
focusing on breathing deeply has definitely eased stitches in the past. actually a lot of running difficulties have been solved by remembering to breathe properly
― lex pretend, Sunday, 8 November 2009 21:32 (sixteen years ago)
Jeff, are you taking any food and drink with you on your long run? If I was running for two hours, I would definitely have a gel or two, and that can definitely help stave off the brain fade.
― Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 8 November 2009 22:08 (sixteen years ago)
Actually, I've been getting into these things when I'm running cos they're so light and not as messy as gels:

― Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 8 November 2009 22:09 (sixteen years ago)
One gel at about mile 7. Water throughout, although not as much as I would like since the city has shut off most of the water fountains for the winter.
― Jeff, Sunday, 8 November 2009 22:16 (sixteen years ago)
That'd be after about an hour I guess? Maybe try necking another after 90 mins. I always get some sort of scrambled head after a while too though, especially if it's windy.
― Obscured by clowns (NickB), Sunday, 8 November 2009 22:22 (sixteen years ago)
ooh that looks like a nice running shirt, t! esp. foldable sleeves. i am in the market for some v. warm tights this winter myself.
i have no solution for side stitches. i just breath deep and run through them but sometimes they nag at me for miles! if i slow down a bit they're bearable but i wish i knew how to modify my eating/drinking habits to avoid them altogether.
jeff have you tried carrying a water bottle with you on long runs? i find it way less annoying than i expected.
― Maria, Monday, 9 November 2009 00:21 (sixteen years ago)
I really don't like holding anything in my hands while I run. I think I'll probably pick up one of those dorky fuel belts though.
― Jeff, Monday, 9 November 2009 02:30 (sixteen years ago)
My dorky fuel belt is my most treasured dorky running possession :(
I have the Camelbak Stamina one, which was kind of expensive, but it's really comfortable, doesn't move around at all (when you adjust it properly) and has just enough storage space (but no more than that). The bottle is way over-engineered though.
