I voted for True Blood, but I dunno, can't really picture it making the top 30. But then, I'm quickly becoming pessimistic about the prospect of a lot of shows I voted for (Home Movies, Pushing Daisies, Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends) making the list at all.

the tuppence takes manhattan (some dude), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

Home Movies almost made it onto my 25, but I voted for those other two! Then again I'm looking at my list again and realize about half of the cartoons and the one anime show I voted for probably aren't going to make this list at all. SURPRISE ME POLL VOTERS!

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:13 (sixteen years ago)

obviously you're joking but I think SNL deserves to be on the list

I kind of agree. Don't get me wrong: I love SNL, and I probably watch old SNL reruns more than anything else on my list (and read and reread anything about it that I can get my hands on), but I think I watch and enjoy it for completely different reasons than why I watch most of this other stuff. I'm kinda more fascinated with it as a performance space and a cultural institution, if that makes sense? Plus, it's just incredibly hit and miss even on its best weeks.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

"hit or miss", obvs.

South Park will probably surprise us and rank fairly high.

"How much play does the Amazing Race get on ILX?"

it used to get play! we were a real team! *sniff* then everyone went away...

(seriously, that was one of my fave ilx group luv threads. but then the show proceeded to keep going for another 20 years and nobody wanted to follow it with the old cheer. understandable. i still watch on and off. i voted for it in the poll out of old luv for the show.)

scott seward, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

Wait, there were ILXers on The Amazing Race? When? Is it on youtube etc.?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

I still watch Amazing Race all the time. Secret shame.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

"How high will Freaks and Geeks be?"

seeing as how ilx is about 50% freak and 50% geek, i'll bet it's top five for sure.

scott seward, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:23 (sixteen years ago)

yes, there were many ilxors on the amazing race. NO, i meant we all used to watch it as a team! it was like a team sport thread. or any t.v. show thread.

scott seward, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

I'm kinda more fascinated with it as a performance space and a cultural institution, if that makes sense? Plus, it's just incredibly hit and miss even on its best weeks.

jaymc, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

yeah...i voted for SNL for the same reason i voted for American Idol, it's just kind of there and has brought me hours and hours of entertainment in the past 10 years, even if watching a whole season end to end on DVD would be a horrible slog.

the tuppence takes manhattan (some dude), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

i'm glad it placed but gilmore girls at 41 is mad disappointing :(

k3vin k., Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

Seriously. I think a lot of people are under the mistaken impression that GG is just another insipid WB middle class white people drama. When in fact it is a top-notch and highly compelling middle class white people drama.

To any of you who balk at Gilmore Girls: just rent the first couple of discs of the first season from Netflix or whatever. If you like television drama, you will probably get hooked very quickly.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

can confirm that i was mocked for diggin it but once i spread the news people were enamoured. don't know why this didn't make my top 25. :( really should have.

(P.S. This is my GG story exactly, and that of several people who I sucked into the web.)

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

gilmore girls is ok, i'd catch it once in a while. but it's also kinda dragged down by the later seasons. i'd maybe consider it top 50 or 75 of the decade.

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

It's probably worth noting, too, that I've been without cable or decent television reception (or converter) for most of the decade. The vast majority of my shows were either gobbled up in huge chunks via DVD or (ahem) viewed via the internet. This probably makes my viewing experience for some of these shows (i.e. Gilmore Girls, which I watched the first 5 seasons of in one steady stream thanks to Netflix) quite different from most people.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

dunno about Gilmore Girls but i wish i had watched all of Veronica Mars before i became completely disenfranchised with US high-school based shows FOREVER

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

oh man, but that show's like on a completely different level from... well, every other high school based-show ever

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

w/the exception of Buffy, of course

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

and FNL. and Freaks and Geeks.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:04 (sixteen years ago)

i don't mean in terms of quality only, but the whole film noir-in-high school gimmick was fantastically executed (and before you mention the great Brick, that was totally different and came out a year later besides)

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:06 (sixteen years ago)

i forgot to say also: lol @ "highly compelling middle class white people drama"

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

i say this having watched a-many of those

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

came to Gilmore Girls too late too - would've liked it more back when i used to think that show Ed was the shit (also Scrubs). crushed on Lauren Graham anyway.

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

As much as I love a bunch of shows based around cute girls going to high school, I am really fucking glad US TV is taking a break from the format. (For this I am ignoring Gossip Girl's existence.)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

lol Ed.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, thank you for reminding me, bluski: NO SCRUBS PLACING ANYWHERE IN THIS TOP 50 SHOWS LIST, PLEASE. THANK YOU!

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

Aw man. Ed was eligible. I didn't even think about it. Not seen it since it first aired, so it might actually be really shit. Loved the first season at the time.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

haha, i totally forgot about Scrubs. i'd be lying though if i didn't say i enjoyed the first few seasons of the show greatly

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:14 (sixteen years ago)

yeah Ed was a decent show for a minute. I would probably like Gilmore Girls if I were exposed to it enough, but I have an irrational dislike of that Lauren Graham lady and would rather avoid anything with her in it.

the tuppence takes manhattan (some dude), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41HRSQPW2BL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

If it wasn't already so overcrowded I would probably add Gilmore Girls to my Lovefilm queue. It can wiat, I suppose

DavidM, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

wait

DavidM, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

but I have an irrational dislike of that Lauren Graham lady

Can someone translate this sentence for me? It looks like English at first blush, but it isn't making a lick of sense to me...

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

yeah al what don't you like about her?

k3vin k., Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, she seems annoying and/or possibly reminds me of annoying people i have known IRL

the tuppence takes manhattan (some dude), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

Graham, an Irish American, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, the daughter of Donna Grant, a fashion buyer, and Lawrence Graham, a candy industry lobbyist[1] who was the former President for the chocolate and confection industry association. Her parents divorced when she was five, prompting Graham and her father to move to the Washington, D.C. area, where he became a congressional staffer. Graham traveled extensively with her father while growing up.

Glad she didn't end up looking like her best friend Sukie in the show. Could have quite easily happened with the candy family.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

like anytime she popped up on NewsRadio or anything else in the 90s she just got on my nerves (xpost)

the tuppence takes manhattan (some dude), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

it's kind of like how i will probably never ever watch the US Office because I think Rainn Wilson is a big annoying vortex of unfunny

the tuppence takes manhattan (some dude), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:36 (sixteen years ago)

welp count me as yet another ilxor that's stoked that 'party down' is on here!

tho isn't lizzy caplan leaving the show? i think she's going to be replaced by mullally. also read somewhere that jane lynch is coming back for season 2

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

no Jane Lynch is the one that's leaving and being replaced by Mullaly, AFAIK the rest of the cast is staying for s2

the tuppence takes manhattan (some dude), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

xxpost

Dwight is easily my least favorite character on the US Office. Easily and by far.

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:45 (sixteen years ago)

totally thought jane lynch was locked into Glee

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

so i guess lynch is only in the season finale? whoever let this happen fucked up big time imo

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

and i don't know if this is a ***SPOILER*** or not but i was just assuming that casey quitting the company to pursue that acting job meant no more caplan

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

I forgot about that. They better replace her with proper WS material. Or Mac from Veronica Mars would be cool.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

lots of shows have season-enders that make it seem like the character is on their way out, but it's usually safe to assume they're not unless it's already been anounced that the actor was fired or on their way to other projects

the tuppence takes manhattan (some dude), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

like A character, i meant to say

^ This. There was no real indication that Kaplan was actually on the way out.

Also, re: "proper WS material", I'm simultaneously squicked, laughing, and nodding in agreement.
