Large Hadron Collander (onimo), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 13:29 (sixteen years ago)

GSS making it totally makes this list worth doing.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 13:29 (sixteen years ago)

but will Final Score place?

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

Jeff Stelling >>> Chappers or wusshername who does inside sport.

Although,

Garth Crooks >>> Paul Merson or Charlie Nicholas.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

Merson's inadequacies bring the lols, Nicholas is a prick, I'd put Crooks in the middle. Have we ever had a pundits thread (probs no need as they get discussed more than football on the football threads)?

Large Hadron Collander (onimo), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

I see this thread is really generating discussion. Everyone just waiting to moan that [HIGH PLACING SHOW] made it so high? Or the fact that you can't make it a discussion about Radiohead getting you down?

#37 is incoming any minute now.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:16 (sixteen years ago)

moaning about everything seems kinda lame, that's all.

but:

black books is a rubbish show that makes rubbish use of the comedic talents of a distinctly unrubbish cast. it's always been a big disappointment to me. rubbish.

antastic mr ox (darraghmac), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:17 (sixteen years ago)

first season of black books was great, i thought

like moses, the townfolk like the red sea (stevie), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

Black Books is perhaps Dylan Moran's finest hour.

George Mucus (ledge), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

all seasons of black books were great. as a rule of thumb- if you have a drunken sociopath as your main character, your show will most likely be worth watching (black books, the wire, i'm sure susan kennedy got a bottle of vodka in her purse...)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

Love Black Books. Hope the IT Crowd doesn't place higher, it's distinctly inferior.

OK Abacus (chap), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:23 (sixteen years ago)

all seasons of black books were great

cosign. Manny Come Home (ep1 series 3) is an incredible piece of dark and disturbing slapstick.

George Mucus (ledge), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

Manny is one of the all time great put-upon sitcom characters.

OK Abacus (chap), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

I never watched Oz. I guess I should. It's The Wire in prison, right?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

It's quite a bit hammier. Good though.

OK Abacus (chap), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

First series of Black Books was great, but it dropped off after that (was that the only series Lineham did?).

Never seen Oz, though I'm aware that it's the kind of thing I should have by now.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

Oz is pretty much a prison soap opera, although there are definitely some long-term character interactions that make it more cerebral at times.

mh, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:32 (sixteen years ago)

also lots of nudity

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't watched much Dexter it the plot seems pretty wtf. Dude becomes a cop AND a serial killer because he hates criminals, and thus has to investigate his own crimes?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:38 (sixteen years ago)

always sounding distressingly close to that donald kaufman film in adaptation.

none of my votes have shown up yet, though I'm glad Gilmore Girls placed.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

dexter is ridiculously entertaining even though you can always see the plot coming a mile away.

Roz, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm kind of annoyed I didn't vote for Dexter, because it's fun (for a cop show about a serial killer).

ailsa, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

If I like Breaking Bad would I like Dexter? I've heard them mentioned in the same breath a few times...

OK Abacus (chap), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:47 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno. In Breaking Bad, the characters acknowledge what they are doing is batshit insane and thus there is a- this is totally the wrong word but 'normality' about it. Dexter is treated like oh hei, cop who is also a serial killer, yeah! great! thats such a great tv show idea! like it is a regular thing and not total wtf.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

Says the guy who has only watched a few episodes of it, so I could be totally wrong.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

They're similar only in that we're rooting for criminal protagonists who struggle with what they do but don't have much of a choice in doing it.

Breaking Bad is much better written and acted imo but Dexter is funnier and while it does occasionally get very dark (esp in the first season), it's never quite as bleak as Breaking Bad can be.

Roz, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 15:00 (sixteen years ago)

I should give it a go, I do like stuff where you're rooting for the criminal (Patricia Highsmith etc).

OK Abacus (chap), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 15:02 (sixteen years ago)

Dexter also has this coming-of-age subtext intertwined with the killing/police work.

sarahel, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

Oz was one of the best things ever made about prison, so it had that going for it. It was framed by Harold Perrineau in a wheelchair, narrating things almost as spoken-word performance, though that seemed to fit. I tuned out after a few seasons, maybe because its fiction seemed a little too beholden to plots keeping things in a holding pattern, but Oz is often cited as setting the template for The Sopranos and everything that came after in terms of gritty HBO big-budget, cinema-like R-rated TV cable drama. The original HBO movie Against the Wall, about Attica, was a precursor.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 3 November 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

Well pleased that GSS made the poll, I thought I'd be the only one voting for it.

favourite Linehan joke in Black Books is the fly buzzing around the shop and then the door closing after it exits. and "maybe I'll swing by the bakers" is a favourite quote of mine.

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

FNL maybe not the best show to reveal while Americans by and large are still caffiene deprived (if i've got my times right). Is it even on Britisher telly?
