I'll stick my neck out and I say I gave the highest placing for both The Inbetweeners and State of Play (both in my top 10)

(I haven't seen the film of State of Play because I liked the TV series so much)

ailsa, Monday, 2 November 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

...liked it so much that I don't want to see Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck doing it differently, that is.

ailsa, Monday, 2 November 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

film has rachel mcadams which is a deal maker for me

caek, Monday, 2 November 2009 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

not sure if i'd use the term poverty in describing BB.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 2 November 2009 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

The second series of Breaking Bad is infuckingcredible, one of the most tightly plotted things I've ever seen, and considerably bleaker than the first if you can believe it. Unfortunately I didn't start watching it until after my ballot was cast, so it didn't get a vote from me. Would've been top ten easy.

many xposts

OK Abacus (chap), Monday, 2 November 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i guess not, xp

realise this might be wishful thinking, but would love no spoilers of season 2 of bb, which i will be watching over the next month.

caek, Monday, 2 November 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

God, I hate to think what was at number 52.

James Mitchell, Monday, 2 November 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

52 was a ilx fan favourite, or so i thought. :D

a hoy hoy, Monday, 2 November 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

Go on, tell us!

ailsa, Monday, 2 November 2009 17:43 (sixteen years ago)

i'll show the full list after #1 has been announced.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 2 November 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

good idea, leave some suspense

retrunofthaghmac (some dude), Monday, 2 November 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

Oh aye, I never thought, if you turn round and go "52 was The Wire" or whatever, then it'll get all the spluttering out of the way too early.

ailsa, Monday, 2 November 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

yay inbetweeners! and i didn't vote for breaking bad (only caught half the first season, keep meaning to catch up on it) or state of play but i'm glad both made it.

how many are you posting today sam?

Google proofing names of people when they didn't send their ilx screenname obv. Or maybe I just shouldn't give out #1 votes.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 2 November 2009 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

Yay, glad Venture Bros made it. I'm not holding out too much hope for my beloved Samurai Jack though.

OK Abacus (chap), Monday, 2 November 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

I've heard enough people singing the praises of The Venture Bros. lately that I started watching from the beginning recently. I have to assume that it gets much better and more compelling as it goes on...

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 2 November 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, it's quite a slow burner. The characters kind of creep into your affections without you realising.

OK Abacus (chap), Monday, 2 November 2009 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

Gonna do 10 a day so it finishes on Friday.

sweet. i'll be internet-less friday onwards for a few days though so i'll miss out on all the righteous anger when Friends inevitably tops the list.

cheers for doing this btw.

Roz, Monday, 2 November 2009 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not going to post any more #1 names now I think about it. Sorry to the 2 dudes I mentioned.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 2 November 2009 18:08 (sixteen years ago)

rewatching the first season recently, I have to say the first few episodes of Venture Bros. are kind of rough, and it really hits its stride toward the end of that season and in the 2nd season.

great to see it here, I'd whine that it's too low but at the same time I'm grateful it's not the surprise at #52

Oh rocks, you didn't use my blurb for State of Play. u_u

Leee, Monday, 2 November 2009 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

This is leaning much more heavily British than I thought it would. Or maybe it's just bottom-heavy with Britishness?

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 2 November 2009 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

we're just getting the britishes stuff out of the way in the first half of the poll, right? right?

retrunofthaghmac (some dude), Monday, 2 November 2009 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

Sorry, here is Leee's State of Play blurb:

Kelly MacDonald doesn't wear a bra, a lot.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 2 November 2009 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

Hmm. That sounds like quite the selling point.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 2 November 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

Dudes its a 2/3 split - not exactly like we are invading again with more dick joeks.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 2 November 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

Huh. Even 2-3 is a bigger split than I expected. Any mild chagrin I might be feeling about some of my choices getting squeezed out is sure to be made up for by discovering good stuff that I've never even heard of before.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 2 November 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

It also helps that britishers were at least trying to different things like ali g instead of two and half men.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 2 November 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

Other selling points for State of Play[i]: I watched it a month or so ago, and I couldn't help but think that this is how the last season of [i]The Wire should've played -- the same narrative density, the same shorthand dialogue, the same, droll gallows humor used to push against the tedium/inanity found in a given profession, and the same weight of institutional self-interest that individuals run into. Also: the endings for both are kind of stupid.

Leee, Monday, 2 November 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

Well now I'm really intrigued. I just saw Russell Crowe was in the movie and couldn't give a toss but I might actually watch it soon.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 2 November 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

Is QI just a chat show or is there more to it?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 2 November 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

Basically it is a panel show where comedians try and be interesting. Sometimes its funny, sometimes you want to punch Jimmy Carr/Alan Davies/Jeremy Clarkson/Jo Brand in the cock.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 2 November 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

QI is a weird british beast, the panel entertainment show; kind of like hollywood squares or what's my line with no member of the great unwashed trying to win prizes.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 2 November 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

xp Chuck: It has a filler episode or two per season, and a couple minor characters remain resolutely minor. But it really is the best drama running these days, and season two is better than one.

I thank the voters on this poll for introducing me to Breaking Bad and Wonder Showzen. I'm perfectly happy to watch series after they close or are cancelled, and those of you with good taste sorting through all the dross make my TV sloth possible.

Biodegradable (Derelict), Thursday, 3 December 2009 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

couldn't disagree more about the Breaking Bad bathtub sequence, but then again I am a horror stan & a cretin.

there is a ban in a smiling bag (Pillbox), Thursday, 3 December 2009 20:05 (sixteen years ago)

My biggest problem with the bathtub sequence is that it was so obvious what was going to happen as soon as the guy pulled the corpse up the stairs. There was nothing surprising or interesting about it at all -- it just seemed completely lazy. But then, I'm not a horror movie fan at all, so maybe it wasn't for me. And I'll definitely take people's advice and stick with the show for a while anyway.

xhuxk, Thursday, 3 December 2009 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

I personally loved the body disposal storyline, it's what first made me sit up and take notice of the show. I do have quite a black sense of humour (which is kind of essential for Breaking Bad), but the way they depicted it as a really really nasty household chore was very original, and I loved that they devoted so much time to the minutiae of it, which shows what a fucked-up situation these people have got themselves into. Far more honest than just ignoring over the fact that our heroes are now responsible for a corpse, as I think most shows would do. It may have been obvious what was going to happen, but the way they depicted it wasn't at all.

But yeah, even if you weren't into that carry on - series two is just exceptionally good.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Friday, 4 December 2009 01:37 (sixteen years ago)

I just found a link about Supernova while cleaning out my bookmarks. Did anyone see it? How bad was it?

caek, Friday, 4 December 2009 12:05 (sixteen years ago)

Watched one episode, which was pretty dire despite a good cast. I've got a friend who really likes it (enough to have bought the box set), but he's Australian.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Friday, 4 December 2009 12:07 (sixteen years ago)

i remember vaguely enjoying it but not enough to recommend downloading it 3 yrs later. also not sure it deserved two series. basically 'ok if v. bored and have nothing else to do and dont wanna watch another friends repeat on e4' type bbc programming (i.e. basically all their comedy this decade except psychoville/monkey dust/thick of it/amstell on nmtb)
