pretty much all the dialogue and most of the shots without jenna ended up in the real broadcast pilot

re: the rule of 3 bit, the most hilarious part was how obscure the first two celebrities were, which put tracy jordan's star into context a little

That guy didn't get to count as a celebrity because of his chatshow and instead because he was once in a queen latifah movie? And the puppet was the third.

haha "jenna attracts gay guys"...just got this

???

Leee, Saturday, 31 October 2009 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

the context was frank explaining to lutz & twofer why they should try to go to jenna's halloween party: "Jenna attracts gay guys. Gay guys throw awesome Halloween parties. Hot girls go to awesome Halloween parties"

it's just another riff on the now long-running gag where in the show, jenna is found to be really unattractive by guys

k3vin k., Saturday, 31 October 2009 21:33 (sixteen years ago)

"gay" is the key word there, cf "straight"

k3vin k., Saturday, 31 October 2009 21:34 (sixteen years ago)

hasn't there been a joke about jenna maybe being a guy when she was born or something?

caek, Saturday, 31 October 2009 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

Jenna as the show's Ms. Piggy is startling accurate, but I don't know if Jenna's ever been able to do the bit where Ms Piggy would drop in her "streetwise business-only" voice: "yeah, Morty, whaddaya got?"

i'm never sure about his star quality since his movies are said to have made like $5 billion

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 1 November 2009 02:42 (sixteen years ago)

hahaha yeah that's right

k3vin k., Sunday, 1 November 2009 02:44 (sixteen years ago)

nah, his movies had been flopping for a while before 30 Rock started, it's why he had to take the job on TGS

his vast wealth comes from Dongslayer: The Legend Of Goregasm

RAPTOBER (sic), Sunday, 1 November 2009 02:48 (sixteen years ago)

and remember, no one on the street seemed to know who he was when he went out to try to talk to 'normal' people.

Jenna gets the best gays.

Tracy lost the money he made from his films thanks to Grizz's bad investments. That's why he invents the Meat Machine.

i definitely got to the sad drunk point last night of being like "that reminds me of 30 rock hahaha! oh wait you don't watch tv. damn." i don't even remember WHAT reminded me of 30 rock.

Nonsense, everyone loves Jenna.

Leee, Sunday, 1 November 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

had to rewatch the "i'll eat a bowl of cherries and some ghost meat in his honor" joke a couple times out of sheer admiration last week.

amazing.

i love the weird running "real-life pac-man" joke they have going.. like when jenna was cast as ms. pac-man in the "real-life atari movie"

banned, on the run (s1ocki), Sunday, 1 November 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

you shouldn't be amazed, then.

da croupier, Sunday, 1 November 2009 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

im amazed that something can bring me such delight in this cold grey world.

Something I've realized from rewatching from the beginning (and something that might contribute heavily to the show's high quality): four seasons in, and the status quo has not changed from the first episode. Sure, there have been short-term shake-ups, but everything always returns to normal within a couple of episodes at most. Acquiring a new TGS cast member would actually be the first big change to the show's dynamic. So I kinda wonder whether it's actually going to happen. And I kinda wonder if that lack of change isn't super intentional.

Anyway. I'm hard-pressed to think of another show that hasn't had any significant changes made to its formula by the fourth season.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 1 November 2009 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

that was after the fourth season.

mizzell, Sunday, 1 November 2009 23:11 (sixteen years ago)

Didn't Henry and Trapper leave MASH in the fourth season?

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 1 November 2009 23:18 (sixteen years ago)

(If so, though, you could argue that the show somewhat changed in tone if not direction)

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 1 November 2009 23:18 (sixteen years ago)

so does sam and diane getting together and breaking up count? what else changed in the first 4 seasons of cheers?

mizzell, Sunday, 1 November 2009 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

James Mitchell's retort is pretty OTM. By this time, most shows would be throwing in a cute kid or killing someone off, adding new cast members, or having the leads hook up. And then there are shows that just progress organically and change as a matter of course.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 1 November 2009 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

xpost

Woody showed up at the start of season 4. And Coach died before that (not the show's fault, obvs).

Trapper and Henry's last ep was the season 3 finale.

musically, Sunday, 1 November 2009 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

different cerie in the pilot too! (sorry if that was mentioned before... with 4600+ posts it's probably time for a new thread.)

the tamiflu show (get bent), Monday, 2 November 2009 01:17 (sixteen years ago)

sitcoms have definitely gotten more into continuity and long term storylines and character changes in the past 10 years (which is the only reason why 30 Rock's relative stasis seems interesting next to, like, The Office or How I Met Your Mother), but yeah lots of show have had big changes from year to year, whether it's soapy story arcs on Friends or just kids growing up on Roseanne or whatever.

some dude, Monday, 2 November 2009 01:36 (sixteen years ago)

The introduction of David into Roseanne was handled really, really well I think (except for the fact his name was Kevin in the first episode in which he appeared).

Johnny Fever, Monday, 2 November 2009 01:42 (sixteen years ago)

In the workplace-sitcom category, Newsradio was similarly static. No changes til Catherine left halfway through the 4th season. Even at the time, it felt like the writers were kinda steadfastly holding against the trends by avoiding any major story arcs/changes.

Ari (whenuweremine), Monday, 2 November 2009 02:39 (sixteen years ago)

naw, lisa took dave's job for a while, dave and lisa's relationship was off and on, matthew was fired for a few episodes, etc

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 2 November 2009 02:50 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, the matthew fired, lisa the boss storylines were pretty clearly just temporary changes, like jack leaving GE to work in the bush administration. Also both of those didn't come til the fourth season.

Ari (whenuweremine), Monday, 2 November 2009 04:01 (sixteen years ago)

This has definitely improved overall sitcom quality of writing, character depth, and general enjoyment for me personally - but I do think this is also why sitcoms in general have declined hugely in ratings and audience size - it's quite telling the #1 sitcom has been Two and a Half Men for many years now.

Nhex, Monday, 2 November 2009 04:18 (sixteen years ago)

even 2 And A Half Men has a good amount of continuity! lot of changing relationships, recurring characters, season-long arcs, etc.
