Back to point: Winamp has got one killer feature that I've yet to find/make happen in iTunes: it can kill the silence between mp3s. I've tried using the iTunes crossfader set to 0 seconds to achieve this but it doesn't work...

here is a gem from livejournal:

as i'm grading assignments for [REDACTED] i come across a pile of late assignments from a boy who's never submitted anything before last week. all the assignments are perfect and commented like whoa and i note on his gradesheets 'beautiful comments!' goldstar smileyface A+
then i notice one of his class headers has another student's name and section number and is dated 2 weeks before any of the other classes are dated. and in fact, all of the late assignments this boy magically submitted now are styled identically to the class submitted with the erroneous header info.
instead of sending him a response of a couple of fat 0s and an F in the course as dictated by the [REDACTED] academic honesty policy, i decide to search thefacebook so i could have a snarl or two at the cheater and accomplice. expecting ricers or frat pledges that list 'beer, chicks' as their interests, i am surprised to find perfectly normal, adequately acceptable, friendly, intelligent looking, non-gross, indie rockers. sigh. the boy gets his 10% off, which leaves him with an 88. and i will probably tell the incredibly friendly push-over professor (who brings pizza and fresh fruit into the i.t. programming labs for her class) that she might want to check this out. maybe.

winamp shits all over anything else. i used itunes for a while but found it to be slow, buggy and a major hassle to use: either you let it choose what to play or you're in for major effort 24/7. any features itunes users claim it has over winamp (smart playlists) can be found in the medialibrary. and as for good skins, they're in abundance.

FWIW I have no use for Winamp and didn't when I had a PC--but iTunes is slow and I'm ON A FUCKING MAC. Spencer is right--there's a longer lag for it to start up on my Mac then there was with my old MP3 equip on my old computer. iTunes is also a pile of bullshit on my computer for about 8,000 other reasons but whatever, I'm the idiot who purchased a Mac which apparently has a shitty music program and the world's flimsiest keyboard.

Don't get me wrong, I really like my Mac in all other aspects besides the programs that came with the fucking thing: Appleworks is incompatible with about 800 things I need it to do, iTunes has completely been shit for my purposes (and I've needed to reinstall it twice to get it to fucking burn CDs), iPhoto is one of the most useless photo programs ever created, etc etc. Everything I've put on this computer myself is fantastic though.

I hear that the new version of iPhoto should be somewhat improved. I've not had huge problems with iTunes, except that I had to retag and refile all of my mp3s to get them to behave nicely with my system of organisation.

That said, iCal and Address Book kick ass!

iTunes won't even let me retag my MP3s consistently. It wil lrevert back to the original "messed up" tagging as soon as I play it or burn it. I've tried every single thing that has been suggested to me to do, there are no permissions issues on the computer or anything, it just won't fix. At least the burning issue fixxed though, I can live with the bad MP3 tags, but the refusing to burn thing was beyond the pale. It burned at like 2x speed and the CDs were unplayable. It kind of stunned me actually. I really, really dislike iTunes to be honest; I hate the fact that their default is to take all your MP3s and then try to duplicate them to "add to the iTunes directory" or however they explain it. It's completely backwards Windowsesque shit if you ask me. I made the mistake when I reloaded iTunes to not double check preferences BEFORE I tried to readd by 27gigs or so of MP3s and I thought my computer was going to self-destruct.

iPhoto annoys me because it has absolutely no options to it besides "red eye reduction" (which makes people look like zombies) and cropping but whatever, yo uget what you pay for.
