Is the place they had on NBC still around?

I think I know the answer, but can anyone tell me definitively whether one can find pupusas on the Upper East Side? Is there maybe a Mexican restaurant run by Salvadorans that makes them? Off the menu somewhere?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 20 June 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

you should do a search on chowhound.com. if they can't help you, then you're out of luck. if you feel like a trip to brooklyn, el viejo yayo on 5th avenue between bergen and dean makes very tasty pupusas.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 20 June 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

not that this helps, but there's a great pupasaria (sp?) near Grand and Graham, I think.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

el viejo yayo = the old cocaine??!?!?!? heh.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

If I'd had time hstencil I was going to take you for dinner at La Fiesta here in Winnipeg. Their pupusas are friggin' good as are their burrito poderosos, which are burritos the size of your arm.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I would've liked that, it sounds good. The burritos I got elsewhere in Canada were pretty horrible.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

As I've mentioned elsewhere I think the highlight of La Fiesta is José, the little owner guy, serenading the patrons with crazy sounding Spanish love songs while wearing a sombrero.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the info.

Grand and Graham

Is this in BoCoCa?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i found a business card this weekend from Planet Thailand.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i''m bored, so i did a search for pupusas on the chowhound board. apparently, the salvadoran immigrant community is mainly clustered in queens with a few strongholds in brooklyn, so no restaurants to speak of in manhattan (although at this point they probably represent a large part of mexican restaurant kitchen staff). there is mention of a place called pupuseria san miguel that opened in 2000 on e.109th between 1st and 2nd, but i have no idea if it's still there.

No one here has yet mentioned Mamoun's. It's way close to NYU which can either be a good or bad thing, but if there is a better place to get great falafels and UTTERLY GODLY shawarma (especially for $4 and under), please enlighten me.

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone at NYU sweats Mamoun's and Dojo (the latter of which is very overrated). Do they give out coupons in the freshman orientation kit or something?

May I add, in spite of it's touristy location in Union Square, Republic is an awesome cheap noodle shop.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

$2 for falafels and $4 for shawarma needs no coupons, and it helps that 1. the food is amazing and 2. it's open all night. Dojo does suck though. There's absolutely no reason to go there at all.

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the carrot-tahini dressing is wonderful, and you can buy it in tubs to go so you don't have to look at nyu students eating seaweed burgers.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

two favorite resturaunts at the moment, both in billyburg: diner and dumont. diner's specials -- especially the fish -- are amazing, and dumont's hanger steak w/ mashed potatoes is GODLY.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the jamaican place right south of the park. i forgot the name. like carribbean sunshine, or island flavors, or something like that. tasty beef patties, coco bread, ting, jerk chicken, goat curry, etc.

go to mamouns and ask for the 'special felafel'.

my two favorite restaurants at the moment, kirara - incredible sushi place at moderate prices on carmine/bleecker. el maguey y la tuna - mexican food on houston/attorney. spicy pork & pineapple burrito, yum.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I'll have to go by Moumon's then.

My fav restaurant is Artisanal when my parents are paying.

(Hi Phil, Yanc3y and Lauren)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yanc3y otm. I am going to miss Fatoosh's insanely good and cheap($3) lentil soup this winter. Actually everything at Fatoosh is good and cheap. it's in brooklyn heights. zattar bread!

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is Fatoosh's?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

shouldn't you be at the library, aaron?

megu and union square cafe are my two fave places. when someone else is paying.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The Voice's Robert Sietsema is usually OTM for cheap ethnic stuff.

But one he hasn't found yet: Radjhani (sp?) in Jackson Heights, Queens. AMAZING Indian food very cheap.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

My Jackson Heights pick is Ashoka.

Cripps Pink (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

who needs cheap ethnic stuff when you can get $28 edamame at megu.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaron, it is on Hicks St, just north of Atlantic Ave

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I've recently decided I'm completely finished with anything over $10 an entree in New York that's not fucking ASTOUNDING. I'm not just being one of those snobbish anti-snobs, I've just already given too many hours of my labor to pay for mediocre food with fancy sounding ingredients.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i foresee a lot of beans, rice, felafel, noodles, and general tso's chicken in your future.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

b&h dairy restaurant on 2nd avenue between 7th and st. marks is one of the best under $10 places.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

no more Sam's Felafel Stand. : (

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't believe someone actually used BoCoCa upthread. I had only seen it in the promotional literature for the shops.

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I finally got pupusas today even though I have been thinking about it since this thread.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

has anyone gotten a hold of the michelin guide yet?

america's next top ramen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

This is not related to restaurants, but it didn't seem worthy of its own thread.

Where's a good place to buy men's dress shoes in the Upper West side (59th and above)? I have to buy some tomorrow afternoon, and I only have an hour or so.

Super Cub (Debito), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 04:00 (twenty years ago)

Tip Top Shoes, 72nd St East of Bway

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

Thank you gabbneb, sage of New York.

Super Cub (Debito), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Taza de Oro for awesome cheap Puerto Rican food. I forget where it is but I remember walking there from Chelsea

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

am i the only one who didn't know Al Yeganeh had franchised? are the branches anything like the original?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 12 January 2006 18:58 (twenty years ago)
