Ah! I wish this were somewhere nearer to me. My friend is going to be working (speaking? vending?) at this. If you see a lovely goth chick named Jemiah, tell her that Masonic Kate says hello!

Just finished the festival weekend. Several hundred weirdos and geeks and goths and a handful of really attractive genre fans streamed thru the theater. I did not get enough wine.

I am now at work, trying to get some rest. Whee.

two weeks pass...
going to be in portland next weekend to see bonnie prince billy. i know i gotta check out ozone and everyday music.

now i just need to know where to eat? breakfast and dinner suggestions welcome. bakery ideas would be appreciated to.

[really wish i had tix for the katatonia/agalloch/moonspell show instead, but my betrothed is not to fond of metal]

For a second I thought you were donut bitch because of your "e-mail", and I got very confused.

Anyway, where are you staying? There's no shortage of great breakfast and dinner places in Portland. But search Valentine's, the Farm, Nicholas, maybe J&M for breakfast or Bijou. Stop at Voodoo Doughnuts. Pearl Bakery, perhaps also Grand Central. And, you know, Powell's.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:17 (seventeen years ago) link

i was also scratching my head -- bonnie prince billy? betrothed? lack of knowledge about pdx? that doesn't sound very donut-ish.

the orchid and the wasp (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:55 (seventeen years ago) link

gonna be there for thanksgiving. can't wait.

breakfaast-wise, i like fat albert's.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

sorry for the confusion.....gonna have to fix that. consider it a 'hommage' to donut for now :)

we are staying at the doubletree on NE Multnomah. really wanted to stay at mcmenamins kennedy school hotel, but it was booked way in advance.

thanks for the info.

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Friday, 27 October 2006 15:46 (seventeen years ago) link

also good dinner places: Dots ($) and Lovely Hula Hands ($$$)

and for dessert: Pix Patisserie

ianinportland (ianinportland), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, for dinner try Wildwood ($$$ - Northwest cuisine), Il Piatto ($$ - Italian), Nuestra Cocina ($$ - Mexican)

If you're swinging by music shops, you might want to stop by Jackpot (2 locations - downtown and Hawthorne)

darin (darin), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I might be in Portland during Thankgiving weekend as well. (I'll be in seattle for the holiday itself though.)

gwynywdd dwnyt fyrwr byychydd gww (donut), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Some more dinner suggestions: Swagats ($ - Indian), Flying Pie ($ - Pizza), Typhoon ($$ - Thai), Saburo's ($$ - Sushi)

darin (darin), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:35 (seventeen years ago) link

omg, the Cuban place called Pambiche -- I ate everything.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 27 October 2006 16:47 (seventeen years ago) link

is the cup and saucer (on hawthorne) still around? that place helped me through so many hangovers.

the orchid and the wasp (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 October 2006 17:01 (seventeen years ago) link

there's always Montage for the excellent mac & cheese.

also, there's a zombiewalk in portland tomorrow.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 27 October 2006 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Buncha great suggestions. May I add, Lagniappe (probably my favorite restaurant right now) and Autentica. Both are on Fremont. Hang a left on 16th just after Lloyd Center and it's a straight shot up 15th to Fremont and hang a right.

SE Division is starting to blow up (finally!). Petit Provence does breakfast and is also a bakery. There is also the aforementioned Nuestra Cocina and Lauro for dinner (entrees run $12-$23).

Maybe some others can pipe in to disagree or agree but it seems like PDX'ers are crazy about going out to breakfast on the weekends. Expect a wait if you head out too late.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Friday, 27 October 2006 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

D'oh! The restaurants are off Alberta, not Fremont. I knew something was off about that.

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Friday, 27 October 2006 21:36 (seventeen years ago) link

right by my house.

except all the new places overcharge, w/ the exception of The Nest.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 27 October 2006 21:39 (seventeen years ago) link

what's the one thai place in the house? that place is the best place in pdx.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 27 October 2006 21:59 (seventeen years ago) link

which one? this place is lousy with thai places, in houses or not.

at any rate, Say Hi To Your Mom is playing tonight at the Towne Lounge, so time to head to that.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 27 October 2006 22:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I kinda disagree about many of Darin's suggestions (Wildwood? Il Piatto? Swagats?!) but how the hell did I forget Pambiche?

Cup and Saucer is still hanging on.

Ethiopian places on Broadway are generally good (I tend to go to Blue Nile the most, because it's closest to me) and Costello's is my local coffee/sammich haunt.

PDX is still a huge breakfast town, and the restaurants still close too damn early.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 28 October 2006 05:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I kinda disagree about Casuistry's disagreement with my suggestions. What's to not like about Wildwood?!

I still need to try Pambiche.

darin (darin), Saturday, 28 October 2006 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Stumptown Comics Fest is going on today at the convention center, along with 50 million other things

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 28 October 2006 19:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, wait, my bad! I was thinking of Wild Abandon -- I've never been to Wildwood.

I think Il Piatto is overpriced and bland (which is a shame since I live within spitting distance and I liked it ambience well enough) and Swagat has caused way too many GI issues in friends and smelled far too strongly of ammonia the last time I went.

Ken's Artisan Pizza is new and pretty great.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 28 October 2006 22:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Wildwood is quite good but pricey. and if you want tasty ethiopian, hit up queen of sheba on MLK. Zero ambiance but oh so good food...

ianinportland (ianinportland), Monday, 30 October 2006 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I've just had enough bad service at Queen of Sheba that I'd recommend Blue Nile, Abol, the other Broadway place (Mudai?) or, for the adventurous and thrifty, Dalos over it. But the food at QoS is certainly good enough.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 30 October 2006 20:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Dalos is great. What's that little place on like 10th? is that mudai?

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 30 October 2006 20:25 (seventeen years ago) link

On 10th and Bway? Mudai and Abol are both right there.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 01:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I will be in Portland for Thanksgiving.

I have never been to Portland before but I have one important question - where can I find some of your ex-pat English "soccer" pubs where I can see the crucial, balanced-on-a-knife-edge, season-defining Man Utd-Chelsea game on Sunday 26th?

I am staying at the Mcmenamins Kennedy School thing, but I'm driving up so I imagine most places are within my reach.

I might do some other stuff too, who knows.

yeah, the Horse Brass.

Good stuff. HP Sauce. Etc.

Thanks! HP Sauce!

The only things I know about Portland I learnt from My Own Private Idaho.

Rebel.yell.For.Internet.cakes (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 04:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Adam OMG WTF?! Seriously if we don't hang out I will weep.

Horse Brass is the English pub but do they show the games? I don't even remember them having a tv -- but they sure ought to. Costello's, the coffee shop near me, regularly shows soccer games. Either way call first.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 06:27 (seventeen years ago) link

-indie rock hollywood-

dream torture (blood bitch), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 06:31 (seventeen years ago) link

They have that big ol' rear projection TV over off to the side room last time I was there.

But seriously, adam, look me up when you get here.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 06:39 (seventeen years ago) link

oh portland...why were you so wet this weekend?

thanks for the suggestions upthread. we had a great time in your rain soaked city this weekend.the trees and parks all over town were amazing. will oldham was lots of fun,the mission theatre is a quaint place to see live performance.

**sorry to say,but i still find easy street [seattle] the best store for my cd needs in the nw. selection and $$ wise.

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 22:57 (seventeen years ago) link

oh ya....while in portland,i picked up this retro rocket for my grandson :)

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 23:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Stop at Voodoo Doughnuts. Pearl Bakery,

yes and yes. both excellent.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 23:07 (seventeen years ago) link

This weekend -- and continuing into this week -- has been insane with the rain! Really, when they talk about it raining all the time in Portland, it is not like this. This is absurd.

And hopefully it'll stay calm while I go vote...

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 23:34 (seventeen years ago) link

flash floods everywhere, taking forever to drive back into the city from hillsboro, took forever to cross the fremont bridge this morning.

if anybody's around tonight, head to the Lucky Lab in NW. I'll be there with friends and fellow volunteers.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 23:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Flash flooding in the Seattle area, too, I believe. I hope all PNW ILXors are staying dry.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 00:09 (seventeen years ago) link

just barely. my basement's not doing so hot though

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 00:17 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, we're taking on water.

fortunately, all my cardboard boxed stuff is up in my room.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 00:19 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, i got everything up off the floor a month or two ago. i've lived here long enough that i better know by now

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 00:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I should probably check the basement, hm.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 03:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Hello again - I hadn't checked back but I thought I should do so with my trip coming up. I'm only in town for a couple of days, so I'm not sure how much time I will have for contemporary socializing. Add to that that I have no concrete plans yet except for definitely seeing that football game somewhere on Sunday morning. Also - this thread seems to be a bit low on real-life recommendations? I expected a rich mine of information. I know about Powell's and rain.

Rebel.yell.For.Internet.cakes (nordicskilla), Saturday, 18 November 2006 18:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I love rain anyway. I'm English.

Rebel.yell.For.Internet.cakes (nordicskilla), Saturday, 18 November 2006 18:04 (seventeen years ago) link

OMSI, Ground Kontrol, the rose gardens, etc.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 18 November 2006 18:09 (seventeen years ago) link

What's "etc."? a hip post-modern bar, I expect.
