i go to their sister restaurant all the time, Song (in the slope). it's like my favorite restaurant.
RIDICULOUSLY cheap.

is Song the thai place with the loud techno music?
― ian, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link
lol yeah. it's really good! it's kind of ryan and i's obsession the way Gen is you and bell's.
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link
(i'm a fan of loud, tho not on the wrong occasion)
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:49 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah, we almost went to Song once but there was a wait and it was loud and dark, so we went to Long Tan down fifth avenue. Was mediocre/unmemorable and ever-so-slightly overpriced.
Secondary question: is Song the Sea of Park Slope?
― ian, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:54 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah we tried to go to song once, but the music was so loud and there was a 20 minute wait and we got claustorphobic and left. oh haha xpost
glad chat n chew was ok max!
― bell_labs, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link
yes thank u for the suggestion linds

i dunno, i've never been to Sea -- is that really bad?
ok what about this Aurora
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:11 (fifteen years ago) link
I've been to Aurora. Food varied but ranged from good to excellent. The atmosphere is great and the prices are reasonable. The coffee kind of sucked for an otherwise good Italian place, but that could have just been whoever was running the machine at the moment.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link
why the fuck aren't there prices on the menu online? is it $$$$$?
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:27 (fifteen years ago) link
i've never been to aurora - the menu just seems boring to me. but i'm not the biggest fan of italian.
― bell_labs, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link
the menus look different in brooklyn and soho. the brooklyn one has prices, too, which like, helps (ffs)
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link
aurora is mediocre and over price w/a meh steez

― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:41 (fifteen years ago) link
I was at the brooklyn one, fwiw. We had some awesome appetizers, and the fish was good but the lamb was kind of disappointing. Deserts were really good.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:50 (fifteen years ago) link
do you want yr parents to have some novel experience or just a sort of nice dinner?
― ice crӕm, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:56 (fifteen years ago) link
i ate the arepas at caracas last nite again - sooo good - tho i notice the staff there has a weird persecution complex - the hostess accused me of trying to start a fight w/her when i wasnt doing anything of the sort
― ice crӕm, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:12 (fifteen years ago) link
i think they need a bigger restaurant
― ice crӕm, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link
sort of nice (not too casual, not like new money came here to die)
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link
ian, Song is nowhere near as retardedly sceney as Sea

btw, it's not right for me tonight, but i loved this place called Tsampa (tibetan food) -- http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/11350302/
pretty, relaxed vibe, delicious dishes
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah as far as i could tell, there were not a bunch of SUVs double-parked in front of song and the sidewalk in front wasn't clogged with overly orange looking people smoking.

soba-ya is awesome japanese right across the street from tsampa. obv a focus on noodles so you have to be into that but they have lots other stuff too. fun for visitors cause its japanese thats not sushi. also being that its a soba/udon place its fancier than yr standard ramen type place.
― ice crӕm, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:48 (fifteen years ago) link
soba-ya it is. it's not TOO casual is it?

for Japanese: Izakaya Ten in Chelsea. Great pub food. Ushi Wakamaru in SoHo/West Village. Best sushi south of mid-town. EN Brasserie in West Village. Upscale small plates. LAN in East Village. Great Steakhouse.

for good thai in manhattan...Zabb City on 13th and 2nd, I think.
― dan selzer, Sunday, 31 August 2008 04:55 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah, what Steve Shasta said. I think LAN is great, has good sushi + shabu shabu + other cooked dishes + steak. decent enough looking room - not super stylish like a morimoto but not like a hole in the wall either.

we just moved crosstown to the upper west side, (upper -- 99th st.) and are finding our way around. anybody know some good eats? apart from the taco truck on 96th st?
― tipsy mothra, Sunday, 31 August 2008 13:52 (fifteen years ago) link
Popeyes on Essex/Delancey. yummy!
― phil-two, Sunday, 31 August 2008 18:18 (fifteen years ago) link
PS we didn't end up going into manhattan the other night, so no sushi.
BUT we did try mary's fish camp in the slope -- it was average, nothing to write home about.

went to "olea mediterranean taverna" in fort greene last night and had some awesome "turkish cigars" and a pretty good paella. sangria was ok. kinda overdone on 'atmosphere' tho which incl. some white-conversed v-necked flamenco-style guitarist on a stool right next to us whose repertoire featured 'what a wonderful world'

finally went to the red hook soccer fields. food was great and the lines weren't the crazy hassle I was expecting so all in all it was an A+. had ceviche, pupusas (pork, jalapeno, cheese) and a pork huarache
also went to Tia Pol, v. good but always pretty crowded

I had this same meal on saturday. also the best horchata i've had in nyc.

good to hear. things were a complete mess when we went; food (save for the ceviche) wasn't the usual deliciousness, either.
― lauren, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:17 (fifteen years ago) link
my one mistake in our red hook odyssey was that I forgot to go to the liquor store with all the small batch bourbons (LeNell's). been meaning to check it out.
― dmr, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 16:50 (fifteen years ago) link
me too! we meant to go after eating, but we wasted so much time waiting in line that we had to hurry out of there.
