was anyone else as surprised as i was (ie, totally stunned) to find out how bad tahini is for you? like, you would be better off eating lard (literally).

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Really????

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:33 (nineteen years ago) link

*Adam starts puking up all the tahini he's ever eaten*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:33 (nineteen years ago) link

omg yes, adam. it's like pure fat. shocking, right? sesame seeds, who knew.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:35 (nineteen years ago) link

It's that or Subway!

-- adam...

bullshit, there are like 5000 places to eat around there! your coworkers are lazy!

xpost re tahini: Aw man, don't ruin my day :(

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Chipotle is the greatest! Is there a Chipotle rules(!) thread around here?

E--- S------- and don't I know it, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:13 (nineteen years ago) link

What's tahini? Cupola?

*begging forgiveness for ignorance*

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:35 (nineteen years ago) link

It's like peanutbutter but with sesame seeds, and a main ingredient in hummus.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:38 (nineteen years ago) link

A cupola is a domed roof or ceiling, and is also a main ingredient in hummus.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 17:46 (nineteen years ago) link

adam you should just remember the sort of crap you (probably) used to eat in the UK on your lunch hour.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I ate a Chipotle chicken and black bean burrito an hour and a half ago, inspired by this thread and the get-a-burrito-free coupon in my computer bag. Then I went into burrito coma. I just woke up. Awesome.

Thanks for the reminder ILX.

ive always been tempted to try the chipotle on st.marks street in nyc. just as a big fuck you to all the "anarchist anti-capitalist goth punk fag nyu bitch" types around. also, i heard the food is yummy.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 23:23 (nineteen years ago) link

this thread makes me want to hit up burrito max or anna's.

we don't have no chipotle here in new england.

trigonalmayhem (trigonalmayhem), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 23:28 (nineteen years ago) link

it makes me wanna go San Loco.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 23:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Chipotle has good guacamole, but they are overpriced. I can get better burritos near my house, and cheaper.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 18 November 2004 02:05 (nineteen years ago) link

guac/chips way too salty
one of the salsas way too corn syrupy
otherwise, not bad

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 18 November 2004 02:09 (nineteen years ago) link

sesame seeds, like peanuts = good fat though, right?

not bad fat?

I try to eat as much good fat as I can.

tons and tons of it.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 18 November 2004 02:36 (nineteen years ago) link

what about that sesame paste they use for cold noodles? that's good fat, RIGHT?

The one in Brooklyn Heights is about the only decent, cheap food to be had on weekends

You're joking, right?

tonight i had vegetable wonton soup from andy's on montague street. One quart = $3.50 or something. i heart new york.

hockey family (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 November 2004 04:38 (nineteen years ago) link

and since we're including atlantic ave. as brooklyn heights, i've decided that for my birthday i don't want a cake, i want one of those boxes of lebanese baklava they sell at sahadi.

hockey family (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 November 2004 04:44 (nineteen years ago) link

speaking of atlantic avenue, I've been gong to Bachus for brunch constantly, best in the area by far, and there's a new cafe opening up next door that looks like it may be really nice.

I don't make it to montague st. much since I moved from Court to wyckoff and nevins. My fave foods in the area are Zaytons on smith st., Aunt Suzy's and Bonnies on 5th Ave, Calexico on 5th, Soul Spot on Atlantic near Smith is GREAT...many others. Very happy in this area, thank you. And the bodega on hoyt above atlantic that makes killer tacos.

I dunno about that tahini thing. I've got a jar right here, and it says -- serving size: 2 tbsp, calories 210, calories from fat 150, total fat 16g, saturated fat 2g, cholesterol 0mg. Seems like lard would be worse but then again I don't have any lard lying around. This thing's from Whole Foods, yeah, but it's not like low-fat or anything. Ingredients says "mechanically hulled roasted sesame seeds". Then again, maybe lauren is talking about tahini SAUCE, like what gets drizzled on falafel and so forth. I have no idea what gets added to the tahini to make it all liquidy like that. Perhaps it's something really bad. I just use this stuff to make hummus.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 18 November 2004 05:09 (nineteen years ago) link

wait, maybe it is bad; total fat 16g is apparently = 25% of daily value. That seems like a lot. So yeah, maybe it is worse than lard.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 18 November 2004 05:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay okay there are more places to eat in Brooklyn Heights. I meant to say that I'm lazy and it's close and quick and pretty yummy. Although today there was dude standing in front and was a bit too friendly trying to get people to come inside. And yesterday two of my classmates went and the manager was hitting on them. It was kind of funny. Oh and also they always play some weird CD comp. Today this woman next to me was complaining about the Jeff Buckley song. That was also kind of funny.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 18 November 2004 05:13 (nineteen years ago) link

best thing about brooklyn heights(sorry to derail thread) is Metro Comics, the little known sister store to St. Marks comics, which looks like crappy superhero fest out front but inside, the same cute alterna-girls are selling old issues of Love and Rockets and Yummy Fur. Go buy this now:

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 18 November 2004 05:33 (nineteen years ago) link

metro comics has been open forever and ever and ever. i'm amazed.

hockey family (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 November 2004 05:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I keep trying to think what chipotle is the new. The actual ingredient, not the restaurant. Is it pesto? You know, how a while ago, pesto was only used in Italian places, and then all of a sudden trendy sandwich shops started offering pesto mayo and shit like that? Maybe roasted red peppers, once you could get, like, roasted red pepper hummus? Anyway, chipotle is the new whatever the last trendy ingredient was. Everywhere's got a new chipotle-flavored dish.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 November 2004 06:29 (nineteen years ago) link

I also recommend avoiding Qdoba (another assembly-line burrito joint), but Baja Fresh is really, incredibly, strikingly good fast food -- you can really tell that the ingredients are fresh and are cooked on a real grill on the spot.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 18 November 2004 06:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Apart from the fact that their name means "Below Fresh."

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 November 2004 06:37 (nineteen years ago) link

It's fresh, and not bad, but very bland. Luckily, the ones I've been to have a bottle of Cholula at every table.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 November 2004 06:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Man, I wish there was a Chipotle near my work, I'm really craving a giant black-bean burrito.

crappy superhero fest > love&rockets/yummy fur

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:27 (nineteen years ago) link

crappy superhero fest = to be found at many comic book stores all over the land

love & rockets/yummy fur = harder to come by

copies of Young Lust and Binky Brown = not what you expect to see on montague street.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:56 (nineteen years ago) link

you tell 'em, selzer.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 18 November 2004 17:03 (nineteen years ago) link

(even if i never really got what was so great about binky brown.)

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 18 November 2004 17:04 (nineteen years ago) link

binky brown = first autobiographical, telling all kinds of weird and dirty secrets about self in comic book form = big influence on the likes of Robert Crumb, Art Spiegelman, later Chester Brown, Joe Matt etc.
