The Boondocks, Cartoon Network's witty, controversial series, won't return this year as expected, says show creator Aaron McGruder.

The second season of the animated series, based on The Boondocks' comic strip, was given a late 2006/winter 2007 date to return to Cartoon Network's late-night block, Adult Swim, after its hugely successful first season (it was the highest-rated series premiere in Cartoon Network history).

Network execs, in fact, bumped the number of The Boondocks' episodes up from 15 to 20 - which seems to have contributed to the delay.

"Our production schedule is really, really long," says McGruder, who's publicizing the first-season DVD.

"We're halfway through the writing and just getting under way with the animation."

McGruder now says fans should look for the series to return in March.

[ . . . ]

"It's really hard," [McGruder] says. "We're working more and more with artists overseas. We now have a Japanese anime studio named Madhouse to help us out.

"I was happy with a lot of season one, but I thought a lot of it could look better. We're really passionate artists.

"The people working with me on the show are phenomenal, phenomenal artists and they really care about getting it right."

OPO? I've had the Pavement episode of Space Ghost on my TiVo since the week I got it three and a half years ago . . . so that one.

"That music you played was very bad! You're fired! Get me the Beatles!"

This happening after Aaron McGruder quit doing the strip supposedly so he could concentrate on the animated version kind of sucks for Boondocks fans.

Then again The Boondocks is probably the only show on Adult Swim that isn't done in crappy flash animation, so it probably takes a lot longer than the standard AS show.

Venture Brothers.

John Justen says Toonces was one of the most talented cats on televison (johnjus, Monday, 15 January 2007 22:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Boondocks kind of sucks, period.
Venture Brothers in a walk, for me.

Is Harvey Birdman still on/funny?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 15 January 2007 22:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I love Venture Brothers to an unreasonable degree. How can you not love any show that features Klaus Nomi as an evil henchman?

Harvey Birdman is done.

N.i.c.o.l.e (Ex Leon), Monday, 15 January 2007 22:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I was about to be all "wtf Boondocks is incredible wtf" but then I remember how I've never found Venture Bros funny even though lots of people like it and then I also remember diff'rent strokes for diff'rent people or whatever.

RIP Birdman :(

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 15 January 2007 22:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I went as Harvey Birdman at a Halloween gig once. Playing drums while wearing a wool blazer, a mask, and 6 ft wings kind of sucked incredible ass.

marmotwolof, Monday, 5 March 2007 09:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Frisky Dingo is fucking excellent.

HI DERE, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I found another Adult Swim show I cannot stand that all my friends love: Squidbillies. Just. Not. Funny.

Ever.

nickalicious, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I think I only actually ever watch Adult Swim anymore for Futurama or bizarre anime that I find compelling but will never understand (a la Paranoia Agent).

nickalicious, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I love Squidbillies so much, especially the sheriff. That guy's voice is so familiar...

Rock Hardy, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Paranoia Agent is fucking excellent rught up until they explain what's going on, at which point it becomes incredibly irritating.

HI DERE, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't get Adult Swim but I agree w/ hi dere re: Paranoia Agent is good until the explanation (although the akira-esque explosion of goopy pain was pretty awesome, and Susumu Hirasawa (sp?) is a god of music)

Will M., Monday, 5 March 2007 18:38 (seventeen years ago) link

The best ep of Paranoia Agent was the suicide club one!!! It was so sweet and silly.

nickalicious, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Also am I the only one who found Shounen Bat/Lil Slugger waaay more menacing as a little kid than as a demon?

nickalicious, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Squidbillies and Aqua Teen both kinda tickle me.

And there was one part of one episode of 12 Oz Mouse that I was in tears for, but other than that moment I find it profoundly unfunny.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:41 (seventeen years ago) link

btw I think it is much better in Japanese w/ subtitles, the subtitling is incredibly done, the opening theme has a phonetical follow-the-bouncing-ball singalong! and "Shounen Bat" sounds so much more hardcore than "Lil Slugger".

nickalicious, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, the whole meltdown is awesome, but the reason for it is like the twee-est most smackable thing they could have ever come up with.

Best episodes: Suicide Club, Popular kid gets mistaken for Little Slugger, Virgin/Whore, Chief's wife rebukes Little Slugger/Chief succumbs to Little Slugger

HI DERE, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Bleach is fucking awesome, btw, if completely incomprehensible if you only watch it once every three weeks.

HI DERE, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:48 (seventeen years ago) link

haha, totally agreed. Actually the incomrehensibility of it is part of the charm, for me at least.

I can't get into EHreka 7 though.

nickalicious, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:50 (seventeen years ago) link

If they pronounced it YOO-REEK-AH as opposed to OI-WRECKA I would like it about a billion times more.

I will also rep for Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop until the day I die.

HI DERE, Monday, 5 March 2007 19:12 (seventeen years ago) link

(On second thought, I would still have issues with the whole "Gecko State" thing.)

It should have been enormous. Like Arrested Development, probably too intelligent and convoluted for mass-market tastes. I reckon it's one of the 5 best TV shows I've seen.

voodoo brown (Stevie D), Sunday, 22 March 2009 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think Frisky Dingo was nec. too smart for TV - it's actually more accessible than a lot of Adult Swim shows. In a way I felt like it was the logical conclusion to what the adult swim people have been working at for a long time.

It did share Arrested Development's problem in another way - a linear plot and jokes that built on each other episode to episode. So if someone started watching at episode 8 or whatever, they a. won't have any idea what's going on or who the fuck that muscular monster dude is b. aren't gonna find the funniest jokes funny.

Horrible, horrible model for attracting new viewers but at the same time Frisky Dingo without those things would prolly suck.

iatee, Sunday, 22 March 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, that's probably a better way of putting it - both shows are accumulative and require dedication, which is more than quite a lot of people are willing to give. agreed it was more accessible than other Adult Swim stuff - it's basically their huge juggernaut animated sitcom spectacular, where the experimentalism and iconoclasm of their more nuggety stuff gets fleshed out into a genuine narrative

leigh exodus (country matters), Sunday, 22 March 2009 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Xavier: Renegade Angel is the best shit on that shit right now. Fuckin, guy has a snake for an arm. Nothing is funnier, nothing is better.
