max I kinda like this Mexican place at 17th and Irving. not mindblowing or anything but I've gone there a few times before hitting a show at Irving Plaza http://www.losdosmolinosnyc.com/
― dmr, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:59 (fifteen years ago) link
I also feel like I should suggest Yama but it's probably over the price range you wanted and might be a long ass wait for five people
― dmr, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link
the time i tried to go, yama was a long-ass wait for one person. i gave up after 30 minutes.
― lauren, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 18:05 (fifteen years ago) link
vanessa's dumpling house is yummy, cheap and pretty quick but not like, a "nice" place to eat or anything.
― ian, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 18:15 (fifteen years ago) link
you could try Ippudo on 4th ave and 10th street, but there will probably be a wait.
― ian, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 18:16 (fifteen years ago) link
parents in town! i'm thinking Dressler cuz i've been wanting to go.
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:27 (fifteen years ago) link

― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:35 (fifteen years ago) link
oh i missed a lot of these suggestions--we just went to chat n chew, it was nice and not too pricey. i didnt finish my mac and cheese.
― max, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:36 (fifteen years ago) link
I have heard that Joya is good for Thai (it's on Court St. in what I guess is Cobble Hill - sorry for using "BoCoCa" earlier, I just really don't know the boundaries yet)
― Hurting 2, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:47 (fifteen years ago) link
i go to their sister restaurant all the time, Song (in the slope). it's like my favorite restaurant.
RIDICULOUSLY cheap.
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 14:48 (fifteen years ago) link
so wait ppl like Supper on 2nd?
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link
is Song the thai place with the loud techno music?
― ian, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link
lol yeah. it's really good! it's kind of ryan and i's obsession the way Gen is you and bell's.
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link
(i'm a fan of loud, tho not on the wrong occasion)
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:49 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah, we almost went to Song once but there was a wait and it was loud and dark, so we went to Long Tan down fifth avenue. Was mediocre/unmemorable and ever-so-slightly overpriced.
Secondary question: is Song the Sea of Park Slope?
― ian, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:54 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah we tried to go to song once, but the music was so loud and there was a 20 minute wait and we got claustorphobic and left. oh haha xpost
glad chat n chew was ok max!
― bell_labs, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link
yes thank u for the suggestion linds
― max, Friday, 29 August 2008 15:57 (fifteen years ago) link
i dunno, i've never been to Sea -- is that really bad?
ok what about this Aurora
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:11 (fifteen years ago) link
I've been to Aurora. Food varied but ranged from good to excellent. The atmosphere is great and the prices are reasonable. The coffee kind of sucked for an otherwise good Italian place, but that could have just been whoever was running the machine at the moment.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link
why the fuck aren't there prices on the menu online? is it $$$$$?
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:27 (fifteen years ago) link
i've never been to aurora - the menu just seems boring to me. but i'm not the biggest fan of italian.
― bell_labs, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link
the menus look different in brooklyn and soho. the brooklyn one has prices, too, which like, helps (ffs)
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link
aurora is mediocre and over price w/a meh steez
― ice crӕm, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:39 (fifteen years ago) link

i want good thai/japanese lower manhattan
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:41 (fifteen years ago) link
I was at the brooklyn one, fwiw. We had some awesome appetizers, and the fish was good but the lamb was kind of disappointing. Deserts were really good.
― Hurting 2, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:50 (fifteen years ago) link
do you want yr parents to have some novel experience or just a sort of nice dinner?
― ice crӕm, Friday, 29 August 2008 16:56 (fifteen years ago) link
i ate the arepas at caracas last nite again - sooo good - tho i notice the staff there has a weird persecution complex - the hostess accused me of trying to start a fight w/her when i wasnt doing anything of the sort
― ice crӕm, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:12 (fifteen years ago) link
i think they need a bigger restaurant
― ice crӕm, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link
sort of nice (not too casual, not like new money came here to die)
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:13 (fifteen years ago) link
ian, Song is nowhere near as retardedly sceney as Sea
― dmr, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:15 (fifteen years ago) link
btw, it's not right for me tonight, but i loved this place called Tsampa (tibetan food) -- http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/11350302/
pretty, relaxed vibe, delicious dishes
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link
yeah as far as i could tell, there were not a bunch of SUVs double-parked in front of song and the sidewalk in front wasn't clogged with overly orange looking people smoking.

soba-ya is awesome japanese right across the street from tsampa. obv a focus on noodles so you have to be into that but they have lots other stuff too. fun for visitors cause its japanese thats not sushi. also being that its a soba/udon place its fancier than yr standard ramen type place.
― ice crӕm, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:48 (fifteen years ago) link
soba-ya it is. it's not TOO casual is it?
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:56 (fifteen years ago) link
i'm excited, thx cr m.
― Surmounter, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:59 (fifteen years ago) link

for Japanese: Izakaya Ten in Chelsea. Great pub food. Ushi Wakamaru in SoHo/West Village. Best sushi south of mid-town. EN Brasserie in West Village. Upscale small plates. LAN in East Village. Great Steakhouse.
― Steve Shasta, Friday, 29 August 2008 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link
Saul was not all that amazing.
― Hurting 2, Sunday, 31 August 2008 01:35 (fifteen years ago) link
for good thai in manhattan...Zabb City on 13th and 2nd, I think.
― dan selzer, Sunday, 31 August 2008 04:55 (fifteen years ago) link
Yeah, what Steve Shasta said. I think LAN is great, has good sushi + shabu shabu + other cooked dishes + steak. decent enough looking room - not super stylish like a morimoto but not like a hole in the wall either.
― phil-two, Sunday, 31 August 2008 05:12 (fifteen years ago) link
Ok, what's are the best cheap-ass lunchtime meals in the LES/East Village?
