"You said we did it for the show"?

unused user (Jesse), Friday, 16 October 2009 03:03 (sixteen years ago)

The boy's family, who earlier this year appeared in a reality television show about wife-swapping, had been building a helium-balloon craft that was kept tethered in the backyard of their home.

this is one of my favorite sentences of the year. (from msnbc story.)

Change "this year" to "that year" and it could have been the first sentence of a J. G. Ballard story as presented by the sluglords.

top story on CNN world news page: World watches odyssey of 'Balloon Boy' in real time

les rallizes gay nudes (Curt1s Stephens), Friday, 16 October 2009 07:10 (sixteen years ago)

I hope the next top story is about the whole world reading the story about them watching the Balloon Boy in real time.

Tuomas, Friday, 16 October 2009 07:13 (sixteen years ago)

Also, isn't it kinda misleading to call it the "odyssey of Balloon Boy", when there was no boy in the balloon to have an odyssey?

Tuomas, Friday, 16 October 2009 07:15 (sixteen years ago)

That's why they used inverted commas?

Bob Six, Friday, 16 October 2009 07:34 (sixteen years ago)

wht the actual fuck

coz (webinar), Friday, 16 October 2009 07:35 (sixteen years ago)

That's why they used inverted commas?

Yeah, but they should've used inverted commas on the word "odyssey" too. There was no odyssey, he was hiding in a fucking box!

Tuomas, Friday, 16 October 2009 08:13 (sixteen years ago)

There was no Circe confusing things, just his lying-ass brother. There was no Penelope waiting for him, just his weirdo conspiracy theory dad. There was no Cyclops facing him, just werefolf Kanye West.

Tuomas, Friday, 16 October 2009 08:17 (sixteen years ago)

Well, if that's not a revelation...

Mark G, Friday, 16 October 2009 08:18 (sixteen years ago)

(actually, that's an xpost but it still works!)

Mark G, Friday, 16 October 2009 08:18 (sixteen years ago)

Circe was CNN, Odysseus was the balloon, the policeman was Athena...erm....we were Penelope waiting for news...nah, it's not holding up.

Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Friday, 16 October 2009 08:37 (sixteen years ago)

Or maybe "whole world reading the story about the whole world queuing up to kick the arse of the father whose six year old kid let loose a helium balloon and the whole world followed it on TV and online thinking that the kid was in the balloon or it was full of wolves or the kid was a wolf or something but really the kid was hiding in the attic the whole time and now the whole world's really cheesed off because the whole world wasted several hours watching an empty oversized helium balloon"

a gift from your mind in the form of the perfect beat (snoball), Friday, 16 October 2009 10:01 (sixteen years ago)

tbf, some of the whole world had better things for doing. i was watching 'get smart' and anne hathaway was v cute, for instance.

Des Leppilen (darraghmac), Friday, 16 October 2009 12:07 (sixteen years ago)

The family's been doing the morning show circuit, and Falcon is sick as hell. He threw up on camera on Today and then threw up off-screen on Good Morning America while his parents just sat there in silence. Diane Sawyer had to encourage the mother to go check on him or else she would've just continued sitting there with a dumb look on her face.

Gah, these people are weirdos!
